New stuff this week 10/30/06

Belphegor
Pestapokalypse VI
Nuclear Blast
38:05 – 9 Tracks
This is brutal, dark, fast, evil, all that is good about death/black metal. Is it satanic? You mean because of the two upside down crucifixes on their band logo? Who cares? I never have really cared about what songs are about, just how they sound, how’s the production, how does everything fit together… This is just that, death/black metal that fits all together. Plus this is the only band like this I know of from Austria!! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Chiba-Ken
Are We Innocent?
Gotham Records
41:03 – 11 Tracks
It’s a little prog, but mostly just hard rock, a little emo. It’s alright at what they are trying to do, but it’s not really all that heavy. it has a moment or two, but it’s just not Mosh Pit material!

God Dethroned
The Toxic Touch
Metal Blade
39:17 – 10 Tracks
As with the Belphegor above, this God Dethroned just sounds evil, the first few tracks have a good groove of a death metal, almost like Sepultura. THere aren’t as many blast beats on the album as the bio states “in a live situation it’s probably the most poring part” Without blast-beats this CD is still damn heavy and evil. They are progressing more as a band and have great solos, riffs, and everything else. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Meshuggah

Nothing (Remastered)
Nuclear Blast
58:37 – 10 Tracks
“It finally sounds like we wanted it to”  – The band.   Yup, same stuff, new remix/remaster by the band, newly recorded guitars.  It’s all just as good as the original, but better, right?  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Michale Graves
Return To Earth
Horror High Records
24:25 – 10 Tracks
This is a bit of just plain hard rock.  The production is not awesome.  It’s a little hollow sounding and there just isn’t a lot in the way of frequency response… not much in the way of bass or treble.  There are some creepy lyrics and it might just fit on the Halloween show, but other than that, there’s not much special
Scarlett’s Web
Greatest Hits
Scarlett Sound
46:37 – 14 Tracks
I would think if someone was good enough to have a “Greatest Hits”  I would have heard of them before, but I guess I’m wrong, unless of course this is just the title of their CD.  While they are fronted by a rather attractive young lady, I am not really feelin’ it on this CD.  Just typical hard-rock with a chick singer.  Just plain old hard rock too.  Some cool guitar solos, but not really enough to make it Mosh Pit material.
Vampire Mooose
Serenade The Samari
Rotten Records
35:33 – 11 Tracks
Heavy, meaty, grungy, fat heavy metal! Pretty cool stuff, I’m not sure what to compare it to, it’s not metalcore, but it’s got some cool heavy riffs, really abrasive, growly screams for vocals. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit! Lucas has already been playing this on Rolling With Scissors.

Skid Row
Revolutions Per Minute
SPV
40:29 – 12 Tracks
Well, it’s Skid Row, right?  It’s hard rock, the new singer guy is alright, the music is decent.  This sounds like it could have come out about 10 years ago.   I’m not sure who else might play this in town, so you might just hear this on the Mosh Pit this week.

New stuff this week 10/23/06

A lot of releases this week, but nothing really really strong. As always, if we haven’t played something you thought interesting on these weekly lists, call in and request it… or email…

Blacklist Union
After The Mourning
B.L.U. Records
40:13 – 10 Tracks
It’s a bit almost pop-rocky. It has that Hollywood sound… probably because that’s where they are from. I think they are coming to town soon, so they might get a play then… You know, it’s got that old Motley Crue feel, but not so heavy.

To-Mera
Trancendental
Candlelight
52:39 – 8 Tracks
Sounds like pretty good prog-metal with a lot of piano and a female vocalist. The muscianship on this album is top-notch, the vocals are very good. It’s pretty much just this… some great dream-theater-like music with a female singer. Good stuff of course… you’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit.

Converge
No Heroes
Epitaph
41:43 – 14 Tracks
They are back with what they do best, almost grindcore, but not quite metal core. Heavy and intense. It’s got some catchy stuff in with all the brutal growling and whatnot too. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Hammerfall
Threshold
Nuclear Blast
50:34 – 11 Tracks
Classic sounding Hammerfall. This is their fifth album and it’s well put together, all of what you come to expect from Hammerfall. There are some cool thrashin’ songs on here with singalong choruses of course! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Dream Evil
United
Century Media
48:55 – 12 Tracks
Pretty much the same goes for the Dream Evil as the Hammerfall… they do what they do best, but these guys are more “metal” a bit more thrashy and not so cheesy. These guys sound a bit more like Judas Priest or Dio. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Scars of Tomorrow
The Failure in Drowning
Victory
35:21 – 11 Tracks
Brutal metal-core. What does that mean? The music is just more brutal, the vocals more abrasive, melodic guitars… but then what makes it metal-core? Clean vox in the chorus. But not really singy, just more clean shouting. It’s pretty good. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Rayzing Sons
Six To Deal Wit
N F E Records
21:32 – 6 Tracks
Rap metal? More like rap-hard rock. Sorry. Next.

Kylesa
Time Will Fuse Its Worth
Prosthetic
38:29 – 10 Tracks
Take some Mastodon, make it sound all grungy/muddy throw in some Neurosis and you have Kylesa. I’m not a huge fan personally, but I think the listeners will dig it, therefore you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Manowar
The Sons of Odin Sampler
SPV
5 Tracks
Two live tracks and what appears to be three songs from their soon to be out album. And from those three songs… what happened to Manowar!? They are just like, all plain ol hard rock with long drawn out songs that just leave you hanging and waiting for the heavy part to kick in. WTF! You might hear this just because it’s Manowar.

Spider Rockets
Ever After
Hog
35:55 – 10 Tracks
This is not really great for the Mosh Pit. Alt-hard rockish. Female vocalist, just kind of plain and well, just not metal, therefore not Mosh Pit material. I’ll pass this on to another host.

New stuff this week 10/16/06

Angra
Aurora Consurgens
SPV
50:47 – 10 Tracks
The new release from Angra. There’s always a lot of buzz around these guys, but I don’t always get their new stuff sent to the radio station, as in the case of their last album. I was looking forward to hearing this new one, as it’s my first time hearing the new singer. He certainly holds his own. Big shoes to fill. Angra has a great sound, fast heavy metal, but still having some nice cheesy power metal element there to round it out. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

The Haunted
The Dead Eye
Century Media
55:02 – 13 Tracks
This CD starts off all metal and kicking your ass, as you would expect The Haunted to do. As you delve into the CD more, it does still stay heavy, although some tracks slow down and get a bit more “deep” or even Black Sabbathy (track 4). They seem to stay true to their roots. My first listen, I didn’t really like it much, I thought it sounded more like metalcore, but upon second listen, it’s classic The Haunted. I must have been half asleep! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Insomnium
Above The Weeping Worlds
Candlelight Records
53:00 – 9 Tracks
Melodic scandanavian death metal! They have a bit of a Hypocrisy sound, but possibly with more death vocals. Some great guitar harmonies and melodies. It’s a bit of a run of the mill scandanavian melodic death album. It’s good stuff though, you’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!

Children Of Bodom
Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live
Spinefarm
42:06 – 9 Tracks
Not much you can say about this. It’s a live album from Children of Bodom. The sound is a bit boomy. It doesn’t sound like there was much post production involved. I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing. Right now, I’m going to have to say that’s a bad thing. With a band as intricate as CoB, I’d expect a bit more of a clean sound. But hey, it’s CoB, and I’m sure it’ll sound better over the air, therefore you will hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Gaza
I Don’t Care Where I Go When I Die
Blackmarket/Metal Blade
50:05 – 11 Tracks
The bio sheet says they play “a dark, glooming and frantic breed of hardcore and metal mixed with grind.” That sums it up pretty good too. It’s heavy and intense. If there’s time, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Grave Digger
Yesterday EP
Locomotive
20:58 – 4 Tracks
Just a 3 song EP from these guys, one track is a Led Zep cover of “No Quarter”, two of the tracks are the title track, “Yesterday” one normal version and one with an orchestra. The title track is a bit slow and doesn’t ever really get rockin’. The one other track, “The Reapers Dance” does get pretty heavy. Again, if there’s time, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Killswitch Engage
As Daylight Dies Sampler
Roadrunner
12:27 – 3 Tracks
A three song sampler from their new album (“As Daylight Dies”) out on Nov. 21st. This is classic KsE. Heavy, whiney, heavy, singy, heavy, heavy, singy. The title track almost has some Pantera vibe in the guitar sound. They still have their metalcore trademark sound, which will never change. It’s new KsE, they came up through metal radio, and we’ll play this new stuff for you first too.

A Static Lullaby
A Static Lullaby
Warner Bros.
As expected… stereotypical metalcore here. Heavy songs, melodic singy choruses. This seems to have more clean vocals in spots than good angry screams. The songs are put together well, cool guitar riffs and stuff. But as with most new metalcore stuff these days, nothing groundbreaking, and you may hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Stuff that didn’t arrive by show time last week…

Tyr
Ragnarok
Napalm
60:51 – 16 Tracks
A folky metal band. Take some prog, scandanavian metal, of course, some Amorphis, and maybe a little more folksy vocals. There are some cool proggy breakdowns. It’s interesting stuff. Wanna hear it? Request it!

The Esoteric
Subverter
Prosthetic
43:57 – 10 Tracks
First impression reminds me of a little more sloppy grungy Mastodon. This Cd stays pretty true to that impression throughout. Pretty decent and not really like a lot of stuff out there.

Autumn’s End
Act of Attrition
Hammermill
48:07 – 12 Tracks
Technical death metal sounding. It’s got a little bit of everything metal. Some good ol thrash sound, some death metal vocals, some black metal screams… all sorts of cool stuff. It’s interesting, you may like it… if you’re curious… request it!!

Imperial
We Sail At Dawn
Pluto
32:37 – 11 Tracks
I had one song from these guys last week. They are more of the Unearth line of metalcore, mostly just heavy, not too much in the whiney chorus clean vocal area. That’s not to say it’s completely absent. The vocals stay pretty brutal and the guitar work sounds scandanavian, so what can you say?

Draconian
The Burning Halo
Napalm
54:00 – 8 Tracks
Gothic Doom metal from Sweden. That’s pretty much right on. Growly death male vocals and nice pleasant female singing around it, with some long drawn out classic gothic doom metal music to back it up. I’m personally not into this genre, but if you want to hear it…yup, you guest it. Request it!!
