New stuff this week 1/29/07

Architect
All Is Not Lost
Blackmarket Activities
30:56 – 11 Tracks
This is just pretty straight ahead sludgey metal. It has some hardcore mixed in, but for the most part, it’s a bit like some of the louder Mastodon stuff. You may hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Edenbridge
The Grand Design
Napalm Records
This is pretty decent symphonic power metal.  But yet another one of these bands with a female singer.  I guess this must be a trend, I think there’s been a new female fronted metal band every week!   There are a lot of keyboards with some older Dream Theater type music in the background.
Freya
Lift The Curse
Victory Records
29:28 – 10 Tracks
From the ashes of Earth Crisis, one of the bands that helped start up this metalcore type genre. They have a good crisp solid sound, the mix is great, and the songs are all Freya. Pretty decent and brutal. You will hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Grave Digger
Liberty Or Death
Locomotive
56:46 – 10 Tracks
Well, yet another release from Grave Digger. This album is just like their others. Plain ol’ run of the mill power metal. They production and playing and everything is pretty solid, it just falls into the category of “another album from these guys…” You may hear it on the Mosh Pit.

Minsk
The Ritual Fires of Abandonment
Relapse Records
59:05 – 6 Tracks
The last few weeks, Relapse has had some pretty good albums. They are more or less “un-relapse” like. Typically Relapse would have bands that were kind of loud and sludgey with no real direction, kind of like Neurosis and whatever. Well, they’re back. This is a sludgy, plodding experimental “typical” Relapse band. I doubt you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit… but as always, request it, and you’ll hear it!

Mnemic
Passenger
Nuclear Blast
47:33 – 11 Tracks
Ever since first hearing Mnemic and all of the comparisons to Meshuggah and Fear Factory and others, I’ve liked them. This is their newest highly anticipated release. It’s got a good groove, the clean vox and choruses are catchy, and reminds me a little bit of the good old stuff from Mushroomhead. You will hear this on the Mosh Pit.

The Network
This is Your Pig’s Portrait
Blackmarket Activities
37:21 – 16 Tracks
This is pretty brutal and “experimental-ish” It has the random chaotic sound that yet, is focused and intense. As with any of this type of metal, it has to draw some comparisons to Meshuggah, but mixed with some metal core music… not the whiney chorus part of metalcore, but the brutal stuff. This is overall a pretty brutal CD. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Re:Ignition
Empty Heart Loaded Gun
Corporate Punishment
52:46 – 12 Tracks
Hey, this sounds like a mix between The Cult and Soundgarden. It’s good sounding hard rock stuff, but it’s not really the normal metal we like to throw at you on the Mosh Pit. If we’re in a mood, we’ll play this, but since it’s not really that heavy, we might have to pass. As always… request it and you’ll hear it!

New stuff this week 1/22/07

Beneath The Sky
What Demons Do To Saints
Victory Records
45:57 – 11 Tracks
This is a pretty good CD. They have a hardcore / metalcore base, but alternate between classic screamygrowls and cookie monster growls. A nice heavy low end with all out brutality. It sounds like someone pissed these guys off big time, but seeing as they thank “God” and “Jesus” all over the place in the liner notes, Satan must have made them mad. Good thing, because they made a pretty good metal album! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Car Bomb
Centralia
Relapse Records
32:01 – 11 Tracks
A full on aural assault! Fast furious all over the place, it has a bit of a Meshuggah feel on its style. Mostly death/screamo for vocals with a big fat low-end and some quick drumming. It sounds very technical. I think you’ll like it, so tune in and hear it!

Fairyland
The Fall Of An Empire
Napalm Records
62:41 – 13 Tracks
Fans of Rhapsody will like this. It’s good solid power metal, but in the symphonic epic metal realm. I mean, with a name like Fairlyland, what would you expect! Vocals are good, sing-a-long choruses work well and the musicianship is solid. The last Rhapsody album was a little iffy, this is a bit more like their older stuff. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Indorphine
Glow Sticks For Clubbing Baby Seals
Rock Ridge Music

Kittie
Funeral For Yesterday
X Of Infamy/Merovingian Music
47:38 – 14 Tracks
Kittie has been through a lot over the years… and this new album shows a bit more maturity than previous efforts. The music is pretty well put together, but of course, still suffers from the same kind of bland vocals. More clean vocals than previous albums with more screamo stuff. It’s alright, and since we still have warm fuzzies from when they were in the WORT studio a few years ago, we’ll play this on the Mosh Pit!

This Ending
Inside The Machine
Metal Blade
43:24 – 10 Tracks
This has a bit of the euro melodic death-thrash sound similar to Hypocrisy. As well they should, since they are from Sweden. So they have a lot of those bands mixed together, but with a bit of a harsher vocal sound in some spots. The music is pretty quick and the drumming is pretty quick and intense. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!Year Of Desolation
Year Of Desolation
Prosthetic Records
68:12 – 11 Tracks
Just plain brutal and aggressive. Some melodic guitar solos mixed in, but for the most part, it’s brutal vocals, brutal guitar riffs, brutal drums and all out metal. Most of the music I’d have to compare to newer Cannibal Corpse (but a bit more technical), but the vocals are more of the metalcore growl. No clean vocals. Just something you’ll have to hear to appreciate fully. Hint…. you’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!

Various Artists
Family Values Tour 2006
Firm Music
70:55 – 16 Tracks
This covers most bands from last summer’s Family Values Tour. Since most of the bands on this tour were not to my liking, this CD already doesn’t rate up there real high. The StoneSour and Korn stuff is pretty good, the production mix sounds great for a live cd. You may hear songs from either of these bands on the Mosh Pit.

New stuff this week 1/15/06

Well, it’s officially back to the old grind again, a lot of new stuff this week, so tune into the Mosh Pit and enjoy all of this new stuff!!

Hellyeah
2-Song
Epic
7:19 – 2 Tracks
Vinnie Paul’s new project with the Mudvayne guys and some former Nothingface dudes.  It actually sounds like all of what you would think mixed together.  Vinnie is solid behind the skins, nothing too fancy going on.  It’s pretty straight-ahead new-ish metal.  It’s not too bad and because it’s Vinny, of course you’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit.

Destruction
Thrash Anthems
Candlelight Records
??:?? – ? Tracks
This is a re-recording of some of their older tracks, since I don’t have the CD yet, it’s hard to do a write up.
Elis
Griefshire
Napalm Records
52:33 – 12 Tracks
Apparently the singer, Sabine Dünser, died after recording this, but before it came out.  This release is typical in the line of female fronted metal.  An occasional speedy thrash part in the music, mostly straightforward hard/rock euro-metal.
Fear My Thoughts
Vulcanus
Century Media
57:03 – 12 Tracks
Like older Soilwork? You’ll like FMT! From Germany, they have that great melodic thrashy death sound going on. Production is crisp and the riffs are plentiful! It’s heavy, concise and I can’t say enough…. Tune into the Mosh Pit and hear them for yourself!

Firewind
Allegiance
Century Media
48:44 – 11 Tracks
A lot of buzz around this band lately because it features new guitar virtuoso Gus G.  It’s solid, fast prog-power metal.  It doesn’t even get real cheesy like a lot of bands tend to do these days.  While there is some cheese, which is inherent to this genre, it’s not laid on very thick.  The songs are well produced, have some good riffage going on, catchy choruses and licks.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Melechesh
Emmisaries
The End Records
55:32 – 11 Tracks
Well, it’s nice to finally get some stuff from these guys. I read a lot about them, but to hear it is a different story. Some nice intense fast, yet melodic black metal. Black, thrashy and evil. Just the way this kind of metal should be. You will hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Neurosonic
Drama Queen
Bodog Music
41:02 – 11 Tracks
I’m not sure why this fits in for Metal Radio…. but it does have some vocals reminiscent of System of a Down, the music kinda stays around the “nu-metal” vein, or more just plain hard rock.

Phazm
Antebellum Death ‘n Roll
Osmose
It’s a dual-disc CD/DVD that won’t play in my computer, so I can’t tell ya what it’s like!
Since the Flood
No Compromise
Metal Blade
31:46 – 12 Tracks
It seems like Metal Blade has their answer to just about every genre of metal out there. These guys are the Hatebreed metal-hardcore band. This is their 2nd album, they are fast, heavy and it sounds good, just like it should these days! With such short songs, we should be able to squeeze some of this stuff on the air!

The End
Elementary
Relapse Records
51:08 – 10 Tracks
These guys are a bit on the Tool side of metal. It’s a pretty mainstream approach for a Relapse band. It’s a little tool-like, a bit metal, a bit metalcore, a bit experimental (Isis/Neurosis), and it seems to work all well together. If there’s time, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit. I think it’s worth checking out.

Tristania
Illumination
SPV
14:12 – 3 Tracks
A 3-song EP sampler from the mostly female fronted Norwegians. Two of the tracks keep it pretty heavy and sound like the heavier Lacuna Coil stuff you all know. It’s pretty good, a pretty even mix of male/female vocals with an occasional death metal growl section. You may hear this on the Mosh Pit!
