New stuff this week… 7/30/07

A lot to unbury myself from back from vacation, so some reviews will be pretty short… sorry!

Five Finger Death Punch
The Way Of The Fist
The Firm
38:56 – 10 Tracks
Catchy, melodic, heavy, and kind of fun to listen to, I am busy doing some other stuff and just don’t have the urge to stop the CD. It’s pretty good and you’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!

The Abscence
Riders of the Plague
Metal Blade
55:24 – 12 Tracks
Again, heavy, melodic and catchy, yet, a lot more heavy than the FFDP above. They have some of the cool swedish melodic death metal thing going on with cool solos and some sick drum fills. This is what metal should be these days! They are right up there with the big thrash/metal bands out there. You will hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Hacavitz
Katun
Moribund
51:44 – 11 Tracks
Mexican old school black metal!  This has that old school tinny kind of bad production black metal sound that started off this genre.  Normally stuff that sounds like this is bad, but in this genre, as it had its roots in sound like this, it meshes just right, makes it a bit more evil sounding.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit

Rodrigo y Gabrielea
Orion EP
ATO
10:28 – 3 Tracks
This takes latin folk music and plays metal songs… on this EP, it’s Metallica’s Orion, done in latin folk style, they also do Stairway to Heaven… again, in acoustic latin guitar.  It’s pretty cool, maybe not for real airplay on the Mosh Pit, but definitely as some cool background music!

The Warriors
Genuine Sense of Outrage
Victory
33:54 – 13 Tracks
This is pretty run of the mill metal/hardcore.  It’s decent, and more catchy / bouncy than Hatebreed for instance.  It is still similar, as I feel they are in the same basic genre.  The mix is good, playing good, all that stuff.  You may hear it on the Mosh Pit!

Yakuza
Transmutations
Prosthetic
60:25 – 11 Tracks
Well, it’s about time we got a CD from these guys, of course, they’re now on Prosthetic records and this release is pretty sick.  Technical, experimental, heavy, aggressive, all that.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Sons of Azrael
The Conjuration of Vengeance
Metal Blade
32:09 – 10 Tracks
This is pretty heavy, brutal, borderline death metal, but I have to say a little short full on death metal, as there are cool melodic hooks, some breakdowns… a little something for everyone!  It’s good stuff, and nice to have something that blends a lot of the sub-genres of metal together.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Slayer
Christ Illusion (Reissue)
American
42:23 – 11 Tracks
A bonus track and a DVD round out this “reissue”  The bonus track is called “Final Six” and starts off a little slow, kind of like the title track from “Seasons”, but then kicks in normal Slayer fashion.  The DVD has tour footage, a video and “South of Heaven” from their upcoming “Unholy Alliance” DVD.   You’ll hear this new track on the Mosh Pit, and of course it’s Slayer!!

New stuff this week… 7/16/07

Nuclear Blast Allstars / Various
Into the Light
Nuclear Blast
49:51 – 10 Tracks
Similar to the Roadrunner All Stars thing last year, but not as complex… Victor from the band RAGE took care of all of the music, and different Nuclear Blast singers handle vocals on each track. Most of the vox/songs fit into the genre that the singer’s original band You have the singers from Edguy, Rage, Sonata Arctica, Therion, Destruction, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Communic, Nightwish & Tarot and Tarja Turnunen all singing. It’s a cool compilation, so you’ll hear some of it on the Mosh Pit!

Eldritch
Blackenday
Diversity
51:05 – 12 Tracks
This is a pretty solid power/prog metal band and release. The sticker on the CD calls them “Melodic Techno Thrash” I can hear this, the first track though starts off sort of plain, but second track starts off all thrashy…. it does however, go into the normal melodic metal sound, as it does the rest of the album… So there you have it, a pretty decent melodic metal album with some really cool Thrash parts. You may hear this on the Mosh Pit

The Fire The Flood
Truth Seekers
No Sleep
28:38 – 13 Tracks
These guys are in the extremo-core genre… did I just make that up? Yeah. Let’s see if I can describe this… The music is a bit like Clutch or COC on steroids, definately a southern grungey stoner sound, but the vocals fit more along the line of a screamo-core band. They are “for fans of Nora, Norma Jean, Coalesce and Botch.” The songs are short and to the point, don’t mess around or stray from their core sound. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Evergreen Terrace
Wolfbiker
Metal Blade
34:52 – 10 Tracks
“Melodic Hardcore” from Florday. It’s pretty much what it says… I guess “melodic hardcore” is the new name for the heavier metal-core that seems to be typical these days. Consistently heavy, cool, catchy riffs, but yet mixed with some clean vocals. The clean parts get a little wimpy, but they whip back into a frenzy with some heavy heavy stuff and some big arm swingin’ breakdowns. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Malevolent Creation
Doomsday X
Nuclear Blast
49:22 – 12 Tracks
A new album from these classic death metallers, they don’t let up! Just all out meat and potatoes thrashin’ death metal. As with most bands that have been around for a while, they aren’t breaking any new ground, but they are breaking your skull! It’s good classic blast beatin’ stuff, production is decent. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit

Candlemass
King of the Grey Islands
Nuclear Blast
65:10 – 12 Tracks
These guys now have the old Solitude Aeternus singer, Rob Lowe, and the label claims they are now a full blown doom metal super group! Yay! Now, I’ve not been a big fan or am greatly familiar with doom metal, but this album comes out and grabs you right after the little baby intro. It’s pretty heavy and has a full classic metal sound, and stays with you throughout. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Nile
Ithyphallic
Nuclear Blast
57:38 – 12 Tracks
As with the Malevolent Creation above, this new release doesn’t F around, stays true to their sound, although I think this is a bit more raw than previous releases, but just does not let up. This will be the album they will be touring for on Ozzfest this year, and they will tear it up… that’s for sure. The more I listen to the CD, the more I like it. It’s just sick how technical and cool it can be. These guys are at the top of their game. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Castrofate
Awakening of the Beast
Fate
49:02 – 8 Tracks
This is a two-piece band… in this day of technology, I guess you can do that sort of thing.  This is a pretty raw thrash album, sounds more like a “local band” I have to give them props for staying true to classic thrash.  Like I mentioned, it’s pretty raw and “local” sounding, so it gets a maybe for airplay on the Mosh Pit… especially with the competition it’s up against this week.

Samael
Solar Soul
Nuclear Blast
46:51 – 12 Tracks
One of Switzerland’s few metal bands that have made it to an international audience, Samael is back with a new album…. It’s pretty catchy, moderately heavy, melodic and kind of catchy too!  There’s a big electronic influence, and it is pretty cool.  The songs all seem to flow well, and have just the right mix of metal and the keyboardy stuff.  Some songs are heavier (less keyboard) than others, but all in all it’s pretty cool, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Entombed
Serpent Saints
Candlelight
41:29 – 10 Tracks
Well, they are picking up right where the left off from their last album, “Inferno”.  Raw, fast, heavy, classic sound.  However, there are more layers with vocals and other parts too, while still keeping “troo” to their real sound.   This is classic Entombed, not that middle of their career stuff.  You’ll definitely hear this on the Mosh Pit!
