New stuff this week… 1/28/08

Brain Drill
Apocalyptic Feasting
Metal Blade
35:12 – 10 Tracks
Brutal death metal.  Fast and furious.  It makes me want to go into a pit and hit someone.   The guitar work is crazy sick, as well as the drums.  The cookie monster vocals are just right.  The technical chops certainly are present here too.  You will hear this on the Mosh Pit… not to mention they have a cool name too!

Bullet For My Valentine
Exclusive Metal Radio Sampler
Jive/Zomba
15:13 – 3 Tracks
These guys kind of have the Trivium thing going on now, but a bit more on the heavy metal side, and not as polished I guess. Since there’s only one new track and a cover compared to what I had before, there’s not a whole lot to go on. The cover is “Creeping Death” and judging by their sound, and this cover, it does draw some similarities to Trivium and the new polished American Metal. You’ll probably hear a track on the Mosh Pit… more when the full CD is out in a couple weeks.

Catastrophic
Anthology of Murder
Napalm Records
37:47 – 11 Tracks
I always like to mention what sub-genre of metal Napalm records puts on their promo CDs. This is simply labeled as “Deathcore” I guess this is what I have coined the term “brutal-core” to be. But as with the “With Blood…” CD review below, I have to say it’s more death and not as much core. It has it’s driving blast beats in parts, with the growly screaming that you would expect. It does have some cool throwback sounds to late 80’s early 90’s death metal. Either way, you’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Electric Wizard
Witchcult Today
Candlelight Records
I actually don’t have this CD yet.   I think it’s stone metal like their last one, right?   So yeah, stoner metal…

Israel Unleashed
Jewish Music Sampler
Jewish Music Group
77:12 – 15 Tracks
This is a compilation of 15 of the best unsigned bands out of Israel.  There’s a little bit of every genre picked up on this CD.  I might pick something from here to play.  Some of this is not really that heavy in terms of “METAL” heavy, other stuff is pretty good and heavy too.

Necronoclast
The Plague
Moribund Cult
44:24 – 7 Tracks
This is some dark black metal.    The mini-bio says it’s “some of the most sorrowful Black Metal ever created”  It is old school sounding and evil of course In parts, it’s a bit doomy, in other parts, it’s fast.  It has a little of everything for the Black Metal fan… except of course that polished Dimmu Borgir stuff.  You may hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Primal Fear
New Religion
Locomotive
54:00 – 13 Tracks
Good ‘ol fashioned Judas Priest influenced Primal Fear. I tell you, if Priest didn’t ever get back together, this CD might be one of the next ones they would have made. While not being all brutal like some other metal that’s out these days, this is an awesome throwback, yet still modern to what true metal is all about. Some catchy choruses, classic riffing, some singalong stuff, it makes me want to go out and get that black leather coat with the snaps on the shoulders and zippers and all that cool stuff, you know maybe throw a Priest or Maiden patch on it. Some tracks are pretty thrashy, some are pretty “singy” and could be skipped, but as the metal radio guy, I can just not play those singy songs! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit. (Look out for track 8 “Blood on Your Hands”!)

Protest The Hero
Fortress
Vagrant
41:15 – 10 Tracks
I wasn’t looking too forward to this, just seeing the name, the picture of the band, etc., but as always, I gotta listen to it, and it’s pretty cool!   It’s recommonded if you like Dillinger Escape Plan, BTBAM, Iron Maiden, Mars Volta.   It had a bit of an experimental vibe here and there, but it’s chunky, heavy, technical and proggy.   Some parts are cool throwbacks to some early 90’s metal stuff too.  This is pretty cool and different, so you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Seven Witches
Deadly Sins
Screaming Ferret
40:56 – 10 Tracks
This kind of goes along with the Primal Fear, but add more METAL! A bunch more double kick drum, more meaty catchy riffs, and not so polished. Jack Frost is the guitar hero and driving force behind this band, and I have to say, I’ve never heard them disappoint! The vocals are in that power metal scream in parts, but more along the lines of Iced Earth’s Matt Barlow, with many different dynamics. Some CDs I review, I want to just get to the next one, this one, I just want to keep listening! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Warbringer
War Without End
Century Media
39:34 – 11 Tracks
Lately there’s been a lot of new music out there with a HUGE classic thrash influence.  The guys in the band range from ages 17-22.  Someone gave them some good CDs to listen to when they were kids if they can blast out a great thrash record like this one.   It’s heavy, fast, full of some sick solos.  You can compare this to 80’s-90’s Bay Area thrash… you know, Exodus, Vio-Lence, Testament, etc.  This whole CD is full of classic thrash (of course with a modern edge too).  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

With Blood Comes Cleansing
Horror
Victory Records
31:12 – 12 Tracks
Pretty decent new wave of death metal sound here. Supposed to be for fans of the Job For A Cowboy, Suicide Silence vein of death metal. It’s kind of that brutal core, but leaning heavily on the death metal. Definitely brutal sounding, some heavy breakdowns and all that. It’s pretty good, brutal, great playing, production and all, but there’s just nothing that makes it stand out from the crowd…It’s nice to see Victory Records with a more diverse lineup than back in the day. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit!

New stuff this week… 1/21/08

Back in the swing of things… a lot of new stuff this week, some good, some great, nothing really bad!

Alestorm
Captain Morgan’s Revenge
Napalm
41:40 – 78 Tracks (10 Songs)
Good old Napalm Records, the genre of this CD is “Scottish Pirate Metal”  And yeah, kind of how you’d expect.  Not quite euro-power metal, but a shgyimilar rhythm section of what would be the typical prog-power metal band.  This is a bit more “dirty” and doomy.   Then some of the stuff is total epic power metal stuff with a little bit of a Scottish edge to it.  Some of is cool and thrashy too.  You might hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Brainstorm
Downburst
Metal Blade
43:21 – 10 Tracks
So far, 2008 seems like power metal year!  These guys could be classified as a prog-power metal band, I’d have to give them more of a lean towards power than prog.   Good riffs, driving rhythms, a vocalist with an edge to his voice, solid and catchy songs round out this new release.  This is something you’ll hear on the Mosh Pit

Arson Anthem
Arson Anthem
Housecore
11:00 – 8 Tracks
This is the project with Phil Anselmo playing Guitar, Hank III on Drums, Mike IX (EyeHateGod) on vox and another guy on Bass.  If it weren’t these guys, I’d have to say it might not make it on the air.  It’s kind of old school punk/hardcore, definitely very raw production.  Sounds like they recorded it themselves on a cassette deck in their basement.   Then again, I guess that’s what makes it cool, right?   Not to mention, a lot of listeners dig the guys that make up this band.  You’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!

Enemy of the Sun
Shadows
The End
53:53 – 13 Tracks
Another band featuring Waldemar Sorychta.  A lot of the riffage sounds like Grip Inc.  Heck, a lot of the music does, but I’d have to say it’s a bit more brutal, and of course, there’s no Dave Lombardo.   A good driving rhythm again, some melodic hooks are cool, it’s a solid catchy thrash album.   The vocals mix shouts and clean singing, and even some growls here and there.  It’s got just about something for every metal fan here.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Ayreon
01011001
InsideOut
50:13 – 8 Tracks (Disc 1)
52:02 – 7 Tracks (Disc 2)
This project is the brainchild of Arjen Lucassen.  It’s a prog-metal nerd’s wet dream.  Arjen assembles some of the best musicians in the genre and has them all perform on this Ayreon’s projects.  Each album (from this “band”) is a concept, but filling a piece in an overall story (I guess).  I haven’t had time to absorb everything on this 2-CD set, but it’s pretty ambitious.  It sounds like a prog-rock opera a-la some vintage Savatage stuff, but with a lot more artists.  This is something that should just be played in its entirety, but I’ll find something to play for the folks out there!

Ekotren
Light The Fire
Blind Prophecy
38:43 – 11 Tracks
At first listen, they remind me a bit of Pantera, but as it gets a little deeper, they have more of a Chimaira sound, but with some keyboards and melodies and the occasional vocal harmony.   Don’t let the harmonies and melody throw you, it’s brutal with some HUGE meaty metal riffs going on.   Lead vocals are abrasive and angry… Songs catchy… You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Emigrate
Emigrate
Pilgrin
44:43 – 11 Tracks
This is the project from the guitarist from Rammstein.   We got the single for this last year and it wasn’t too bad.  It’s similar to Rammstein, but more along the lines of hard rock than industrial metal.  This might be something more suited for Something Wonderful, (8p – 11p Mondays on WORT).

Disfear
Live the Storm
Relapse
Well, the one song I heard on their Myspace page was pretty decent.  Check it out for yourself!   It’s called “Get It Off”
http://www.myspace.com/disfear  It’s aggressive, fast, hardcore, swedish, etc etc.  You might hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Corpus Christii
Rising
Moribund
57:49 – 13 Tracks
The intro track on this CD starts off with some church choir sounding music, then waits a bit, then just gets into some classic dirty in your face black metal guitar. I can’t say much else, than it’s some pretty good, dark, cold black metal.  It does make me feel like I’m in a dark, cold Norwegian forest, however, these guys are from Portugal!  The playing is solid, and just what you would ask for in a classic sounding black metal band.   You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

New stuff this week… 1/14/08

Gamma Ray
Land of the Free II
SPV
65:56 – 12 Tracks
This is some typical euro-power-prog metal. Some epic singalong chorus stuff, but then the chugga wugga meedly thrash parts kick in and it’s all good from there. Some of the playing on here is crazy-fast and catchy, and it also borders being fairly cheesey. We haven’t gotten too much cool euro-prog that actually has a bit of an edge… this fills that bill, and you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Byzantine
Oblivion Beckons
Prosthetic
54:09 – 13 Tracks
Aggressive, in your face metal coming at you. We’ve been fans of their past stuff, and this new CD is no different. Heavy, American, thrashy catchy metal. It’s not quite as brutal as Devildriver, but tone that down a bit, mix in a little technicality and you’ll have this album. It’s something you’ll be hearing on the Mosh Pit!

The Destiny Program
Subversive Blueprint
Nuclear Blast
52:19 – 12 Tracks
At first listen, this almost sounds like Nuclear Blast’s answer to Hatebreed type of metal….or just plain ol metal-core. There are some sing-along choruses, breakdowns, and a bit of that emo-metal sound. Almost a little TOO emo. This gets a maybe on the ol Mosh Pit airplay. Some songs are a bit more brutal than others, so we’ll have to be careful how we pick ’em!

Saviours
Into Abaddon
Kemado
39:37 – 7 Tracks
These guys fit into the heavy stoner metal category. They meld perfectly with High On Fire. A melodic, heavier stoner hard rock sound. The songs don’t mess around, they stay “on topic” and don’t slack much. Tracks are musically catchy, vocals are a bit one dimensional, but seem to fit well, as to not take away from the music. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Devian
Ninewinged Serpent
Century Media
56:15 -12 Tracks
This is a black metal band featuring a couple of guys that were in Marduk. It’s got just about everything you’d want in Black metal. Dark grinding distorted guitars, some cool crazy drumming, aggressive, yet evil vocals. This kind of metal is always welcome on the Mosh Pit!

Birds of Prey
Sulfur and Semen
Relapse
This is along the lines of that Saviours band above, but a bit more aggressive and heavy, musically and vocally. Some tracks are a bit thrashy, and yet it all seems to be that magic word… catchy. The song titles are pretty funny, like “show him the ground” or “mentoring the mongoloids” or “overfucked and underage” This is good stuff! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Eyes Set To Kill
“Liar In The Glass”
Female vocals mixed with aggressive (female?) growls. Music seems pretty melodic then bounces between some heavier thrashy-metalcore music. The full CD didn’t arrive in time, so I only have this one track.

Sebastian Bach
Angel Down
Merovingian
No CD, No idea what it sounds like! I hear it’s good though!
