New stuff this week… 1/26/09

Cannibal Corpse
Evisceration Plague
Metal Blade
11 Tracks
I don’t know what else one can say about Cannibal Corpse… after the Corpsegrinder transitional period was over… after a couple of albums, CC have really just become the pinnacle of what a death metal band is.  This band is more Corpsgrinders now than it was Chris Barnes’.   I mean, yeah, Barnes was more of a pioneer and helped create this genre, but those days are gone and in the books… CC has moved way forward… they have just continued where they left off with Kill, and keep pushing on.  The tracks on this new CD don’t fuck around, the vocals are right on.  These songs have the classic CC sound, yet are still not “old” sounding.   A+ effort on this one!

Too Pure To Die
Confess
Trustkill
31:41 – 11 Tracks
This starts out as a pretty typical hardcore album, but then has some plain ol metal core, nu-metal, solidrock metal type of stuff. They are from Des Moines… the metal part has a good chugga chugga element to it… vocals are generally shouty-growly, but then have a call-response to some kind of clear vocal yelling… and it’s not emo-singy. I guess one could say this is typical for a Trustkill band, not bad, and fairly catchy!

Edguy
Tinnitus Sanctus
Nuclear Blast
53:35 – 11 Tracks
Edguy is back… euro power metal…dude. Some pretty standard hardrock / classic metal sounding stuff happening here. This genre will always have a place in the world of metal, however, it sounds a little dated. There isn’t really anything groundbreaking here, but I don’t thing that’s their thing. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Sylosis
Conclusion of an Age
Nuclear Blast
59:08 – 12 Tracks
This band fits into the blackened thrash realm of metal. Some fast riffage, speedy drumming, shredding, yet, still melodic and catchy too. The bio sheet says fans of Machine Head and Trivium will like this, and I can’t see any fault in that statement… some great Machine Head-like stuff on here, yet, still has some of the good metalcore elements that Trivium spews out. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Grimmstine
Grimmstine
Immy
72:52 – 15 Tracks
Kind of like the Edguy above, this is in that hard rock / classic metal genre. However, this has more metal leanings than the Edguy. Okay, a lot more metal leanings… it’s not thrash, or power/prog metal, just decent clean vocal classic metal type stuff…

Zonaria
The Cancer Empire
Century Media
45:11 – 10 Tracks
Swedish, extreme metal sensation! That’s what one of the statements on the bio sheet says… and yeah, brutal, melodic, black metal, thrash metal, spacy synth harmonies (don’t let that scare you, it works!)… it’s fast, over the top, catchy, and brutal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Thirty Round Clip
…On Target
Off The Line
45:13 – 13 Tracks
Huh… just listening to the first track or so, it kind of sounds a bit like Disturbed meets Mudvayne. It seems to stay that way, but maybe a bit more catchy and Static-X-like. Vocals are mostly pretty clean… I think this would be something great to play to kick off the show!

Satyricon
The Age of Nero
Koch
42:53 – 8 Tracks
Mike has always been a bigger fan of this band than I have, but I have always appreciated the basic black-metal-edness of it all… I mean, I have always thought they were okay, but never really flying a big flag for them or generally just not “getting” it.  This new album firmly plants Satyricon as a classic black metal band in my book.  They have the rawness of early black metal, yet, there is still some sort of modern hint that makes it not sound completely “old school.”   The songs sound old school, yet have some sort of dark catchiness, that make you want to get more and more!

Viking Skull
Doom Gloom Heartache & Whiskey
Candlelight
37:18 – 9 Tracks
This is some kick ass stoner hard rock/metal.  The whole GOOD Sabbath sound oozes out, as well as some big fat meaty riffs and general catchy hooks.  The vocals have that abrasive edge, that’s just right.

Sepultura
A-Lex
SPV
54:22 – 18 Tracks
This is the first album from Sepultura without Igor… and while Igor was a driving force in the band, they of course still sound like Sepultura.   The guitar work is right there, and as their last couple albums with their “new” singer Derrick, they have really hit their stride with this “new” Sepultura.  The songs still have the same vibe as the old school ‘tura, and this album is based on “A Clockwork Orange”  so, they have a nice dark story to tell.   In short, great metal album, even if there are no Cavaleras involved!

Lamb of God
Set To Fail (2 song)
Epic
7:08 – 2 Tracks
It’s been three years since new Lamb of God tracks have been around… and these guys have not let up one bit.   These two songs are all what Lamb of God has to offer… Crushing riffs, catchy this and that, parts where you can take a break from moshing and then a build-up to go crazy again!  We’ve been fans of Lamb of God from the get go, and there’s no sign of them even coming close to sucking… I have to say these guys are the top of the American Metal game right now.

Saxon
Into The Labyrinth
SPV
50:15 – 13 Tracks
I have to say I have never been really familiar with Saxon… I know they’ve been around for a long time, they have pretty much a straightforward hard rock/metal sound and don’t do anything too heavy, they’re consistent and don’t really mess around too much.   This new album continues down the same path.   There is an occasional thrashy moment here and there, otherwise, it’s your basic Saxon record.  Good stuff, and great for all you classic metal heads!

Rose Funeral
The Resting Sonata
Metal Blade
11 Tracks
This band from Ohio have a great mix of some catchy melodic blackened death metal.  The vocals stay in the cookie monster and abrasive screamo area.  The music has some good chugga chugga, some guitar stuff gets sounding like black metal, metalcore and even an occasional breakdown… however, there are some cool melodic parts as well… but they stay “metal” and don’t get off the course of all that is brutal.

Cattle Decapitation
The Harvest Floor
Metal Blade
10 Tracks
All out, full on death metal is what these guys are all about, and they continue to deliver!  The level of technicality has been kicked up a couple notches too!  Metal needs bands like Cattle Decapitation… just full on, all out, brutal death metal.

Joetown
Pills and Ammo
667 Records
38:20 – 11 Tracks
Joetown is a pretty decent hard rock band.   Some great guitar work, kind of melodic hard rock with a pinch of stoner, or maybe southern hard rock/metal going on.   It’s kind of borderline mosh pit material, so if there’s time, we’ll give it a go…

Iron Fire
To The Grave
Napalm
55:40 – 12 Tracks
The ultimate in over the top stereotypical power metal.  C’mon, the band’s name is IRON FIRE.  What do you expect?   Some good catchy driving distorted guitars, rhythmic double bass drums, sing-a-long vocals… swords, demons, dragons, metal, battlefields, you name it, they have all of the clice’s … and there’s nothing wrong with it… it’s what they are and aren’t trying to hide from it!    And as for bands of this genre, these guys seem to have a good metal edge… and not just all cheesy crap.  The songs are very METAL and well, Manowar-ish!  hah.

Not available for review yet… Rumplestiltskin Grinder, 16, The Demonstration, Roadsaw

New Stuff this week… 1/12/09

Kreator
Hordes of Chaos
SPV
39:20 – 10 Tracks
Well, the first CD review of the real first week of metal radio 2009 could very well be one of the best CDs of the whole year!   They have some awesome riffs, superior thrashing and even some Amon Amarth vikingmetal sounds going on here.  Melodic, fast, heavy, angry, just everything you should have in a metal release.  They’ve been around for a while, and have not let up with this album!

Destroy Destroy Destroy
Battle Sluts
Blackmarket Activities
41:52 – 12 Tracks
This has kind of a “blackened thrash” type of sound to it.   Fast, aggressive, a little euro-folky sometimes (probably just the keyboards)  There are a lot of layers of sound all coming together making some pretty awesome catchy songs.   It has just a hint of Dragonforce, but not with all the cheese and crap… just the good D-force qualities… What makes this all even more cool, is that with a euro-sound, they are from Nashville, TN!!

Modern Age Slavery
Damned To Blindness
Napalm
40:17 – 12 Tracks
Some intense deathcore happening here.  Fast, heavy, aggressive, abrasive… wall of metal sound.  Some cool breakdown stuff happening too.  What’s good about this sort of genre (Deathcore)  is it’s basically everything good about metalcore without all of the emo crapola.

Grave Digger
Ballads Of A Hangman (EP)

This is just some plain-regular metal stuff, you know, what Grave Digger typically puts out.  Songs are decent, not that heavy, not brutal, but melodic, a bit catchy and kind of “sing-a-long”   What’s good about this sort of Power Metal, is that it’s not laden with cheese.   Just enough cheese.  🙂

NYC Hardcore… produced by Joey Z of Life of Agony.  They have a pretty good NYC Hardcore groove type of sound.  Not really all that groundbreaking, but it does have a nice raw edge to it, and some tracks are pretty catchy!

Some Melodic hard rock alternative type of stuff going on here.  Nothing is grabbing me to be “Mosh Pit Material” on here.   Some tracks seem to be catchy, but not really all that metal.

Stuck Mojo
The Great Revival EP
Napalm
I’ve always been a fan of Stuck Mojo… pioneers of rap-metal, which is a genre that wore out is welcome pretty quick… however, the guitar solos and catchi-ness of Stuck Mojo put them far and above anyone else in my opinion.  Rich Ward comes up with some of the best guitar riffs and catchy songs.   This CD doesn’t have too much in the way of heavy brutal stuff like they used to, but the songs are just as fun to listen to.

Christian Metalcore… this is pretty much the typical way a metalcore cd goes… some good chugga chugga, screamy vocals, clean emo vocals, maybe a breakdown… you know the drill.  It’s not bad, it’s just not anything new or exciting.

Woe of Tyrants
Kingdom of Might

Catchy heavy, thrashy type of metal happening here.  Brutal vocals, melodic parts, fast heavy riffing, good intense drumming and all out shredding.  It sounds like they have some great technical chops, and I just can’t say enough about the guitar work on here… such fluid solos, catchy rhythm guitar riffage and it all mixes perfect with the fast galloping drums.   Great release!
