New stuff this week… 4/27/09

Karl Sanders
Saurian Exorcisms
The End
47:22 – 10 Tracks
This is the main man and founder of Nile’s solo project.  Mostly this is just some Egyptian background music type of stuff.  I can’t really say there’s anything metal about this besides the fact Karl is from Nile.

Leprous
Tall Poppy Syndrome
Sensory
63:04 – 8 Tracks
A bit experimental, a bit prog rock (Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation) but also a bit metal… mostly clean singy vocals, piano and keyboards, but some good metal guitars… most of it is more hard rocky and not as metal, but then some parts just go full on metal.   It’s different, and kind of fresh… You might have to hear some of this on the Mosh Pit!

Hatebreed
For The Lions
E1
48:)0 – 18 Tracks
Back in the day, I used to covers done by metal bands, they were few and far between…. in the last few years, they seem to be all over the place… Hatebreed has their own sound and has applied it to 18 metal songs… and it works well.   Chances are, if you like Hatebreed, you’ll like all of the bands that they cover, since they incorporate some of all of these bands into their own sound.  Slayer, DRI, Misfits, Metallica, Cro-Mags to name a few.   A good wide vareity of covers, done well, and with a good helping of Hatebreed’s own sound…. bravo!

Nadja
When I See The Sun Always Shines On TV
The End
57:57 – 8 Tracks
This is ambient, experimental stuff, kinda like Neurosis… almost like Type O Negative run through a noisy noise distortion generator… just a lot of grungy grimy noise…yeah i keep saying noise… This is also a covers album, but listening to the tracks, you wouldn’t know it.  Yeah, “Dead Skin Mask” is on here, but hell if I could even tell if I wasn’t reading the track listing!  Sorry!

Orange Sky
Dat Iz Voodoo
Star City
51:08 – 12 Tracks
This is pretty interesting… it’s kind of reggae-hard rock… Some would say reggae-metal, but I don’t think it’s that heavy…. like not quite as intense as Skindred…but there’s definitely a cool vibe… makes me want to have a Red Stripe, chill and relax.  Some cool guitar work, gets a bit metal here and there, but overall… hard rock with reggae influence.

Birds of Prey
The Hell Preacher
Relapse
40:54 – 12 Tracks
Some pretty decent metal here.  Some grindy-thrashy metal with some well barked out vocals.  A bit melodic in parts, a bit-stoner-ey in parts too.  Songs are pretty catchy and worthy of air play!

God Dethroned
Passiondale
Metal Blade
38:01 – 10 Tracks
Some great blackened death metal as they always do!   Some good fast catchy thrashy death metal… I guess it’s more than just blackened… thrashened?   This is the sort of thing I’ve been waiting for for a couple weeks, something with intensity and technical chops… You’ll hear this a lot!

Earth Crisis
To The Death
Century Media
32:08 – 11 Tracks
The pioneers of metal/hardcore are back… they’ve been together for a few years now, but finally have put out an album.  It’s heavy, chugga, hardcore, and just as good as I remember… actually better…   I think they’re a lil similar to Hatebeed in their level of “heavy” and stuff.

As I Lay Dying
“I Never Wanted” (Single)
Metal Blade
4:03 – 1 Track
Huh…. this is kind of hard-rockey, a lot of clean vocals… I guess this could be called a metalcore power ballad?   I have to say I’m not too impressed…

IWrestledABearOnce
“You Ain’t No Family” (Single)
Century Media
3:46 – 1 Track
This is some over the top brutal/metal core, but then stops it up for some goofy cartoony sequence, and goes back into sick gurgly death metalcore with some chugga guitars going back n forth with meedly guitars… fast, heavy intense…. a little bit like Protest the Hero… this is just one track… looking to hear more!

Fejd
Storm
Napalm
48:19 – 12 Tracks
Folk metal… in all senses of the genre.  Yeah… doesn’t get too  heavy, but it’s interesting

New stuff this week…. 4/20/09 420!!

Cycle of Pain
Cycle of Pain
Rock Ridge
51:22 – 12 Tracks
The big buzz about this band is that it’s JD from Black Label Society’s band from like, forever ago… WAY before BLS.  This has a sort of hard -rock groove thing going on.   A little bit like Godsmack, but not so much metal.  Guest appearances from lots of folks too (Russell Allen from Symphony X and Burton Bell from Fear Factory on the same song!).   Decent stuff, but nowhere near the level of brutal we have on the Mosh Pit!   It’s just not their thing… We’ll give ‘er a few spins though!

Seventh Void
Heaven Is Gone
Big Vin
42:25 – 10 Tracks
Another groovin’ hard rock album from a band that is made up of folks from another, bigger band.  Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly from Type O Negative are the main dudes in this release on Vinnie Paul’s Label.  Kenny handles vocals and guitar, and to me, just some raw, straightforward metal tinged hard rock songs… I guess I would have thought this would be more exciting, but just a hard rockin’ project to keep busy.

Texas Hippie Coalition
Texas Hippie Coalition
Creative Ent.
43:17 – 10 Tracks
They claim to be “Red Dirt Metal”  Of the previous two albums I typed about above…. this is probably the heaviest…. it’s kind of a groove metal too.   Basically heavy, catchy, a bit like BLS, or some older not so metal Pantera stuff.   Vocals sound a bit like Anselmo back when he could sing (you know, like the beginning of Cemetery Gates)… Also, T.H.C….. are the band’s initials, and this review is being written on 4/20…. Need I say more?

Great White
Rising
Shrapnel
55:01 – 11 Tracks
Okay… fourth disc in the player this week, and there’s yet to be a true metal release… yeah the THC was pretty good, but why is this Great White album even being release to METAL radio?   I put it in the CD player… and it’s classic old rock…. I’m sure a fan of Great White will appreciate new material, but I’m pretty sure someone that is tuning into a metal show looking for Lamb of God, Absu or Cannibal Corpse won’t be too happy to hear this.  Ugh.

Lacuna Coil
Shallow Life
Century Media
43:59 – 12 Tracks
Again, nothing brutal… I guess it’s “no brutal” week for new music… however, I’ve been addicted to the song “Our Truth from their Karmacode album because of Rock Band and Guitar Hero… just so catchy, and this album follows the same formula… medium heavy metal with good catchy songs, both vocalists working well together… Just a pleasure to listen to!   Can’t wait to see them on May 10th in Madison!

Sirenia
The 13th Floor
Nuclear Blast
42:17 – 9 Tracks
So I put this album on just after the Lacuna Coil… and for a minute, forgot I changed bands… Female vocals… some medium metal… but this is a bit more “epic” sounding, more orchestra-ey stuff, more melodic and “fe-metal”  Some good heavy stuff happening along with the Nightwishieness of it all.

Endwell
Consequences
Mediaskare
38:26 – 15 Tracks
Metalcore!  wow, the 7th “review” this week before there’s something actually brutal!   Can you tell I’m in a brutal, heavy mood?   I mean, c’mon, Suffocation, Kreator, Exodus, Cannibal Corpse all in one week?  Of course I’m looking for something new and brutal… not to take anything away from the above releases, but something heavy HAD to finally hit the ears!v   Now, even though this is heavy and gave me a chance to just go off on a tangent about the lack of heavy new stuff this week… Endwell is just your run of the mill metalcore.

The Devil Wears Prada
“Dez Moines” (Single)
Ferret
4:03
Again… metalcore… starts off kinda, eh, whiney, but then kicks into some better quality, angry metalcore… catchy, brutal, and I can just see the arms flailing now!  Probably worthy of playing a track though!

Ektomorf
“What Doesn’t Kill Me” (Single)
AFM
2:31
Kind of a new “nu-metal” thingy… Kinda heavy, catchy, but along the lines of what Mudvayne or the heavier of the solid rock “we’re sooo heavy” clone bands sound like.  Not bad… just the same old chugga chugga growly angry stuff.

Chimaira
The Infection
Ferret
54:07 – 10 Tracks
It’s been a little while since we’ve heard new stuff from these guys, and they kind of mixed a lot of what they’ve done in the past into this new one… catchy, brutal, heavy… pissed off… they’ve kind of taken all of their styles, threw them in a blender and put it in this new album.   Some of this sounds like brutal death metal, some of it a little technical, a little melodic here and there… Just a good all around solid metal release!

Emperor
Life Inferno
Candlelight
2 CDs
I couldn’t get disc 1 to play, which was their set at the Inferno Festival… Disc 2 works, and it’s their set from Wacken Open Air.   It’s Emperor… It’s Live… sound quality is good, performance is great… This would have been a great show to see!!  This seems to capture the show pretty well.

New stuff this week…. 4/13/09

Well, after a week off last week… it’s good to be back… Thanks to Mike for filling in last week with his 3 hours of awesomeness.   New stuff last week that I probably won’t write up just because I don’t have time right now…
Heaven and Hell Single, Live Ministry album, Gollum (on Rotten Records), Agoraphobic Nosebleed (on Relapse), Tardy Brothers (yes, from Obituary), David Chastain and Bulletmonks.

So, for new stuff this week…

Daath
The Concealers
Century Media
41:20 – 11 Tracks
Pretty good american deathrash going on for their 2nd release.   You can tell there’s more time put into this one, a bit more melodic and not quite as heavy and in-your-face as the first one. …allthough it does go all out heavy in some parts.   Just a good solid metal album… can’t wait to see them live again!

Burning Human
Resurrection Through Fire
E1
38:09 – 10 Tracks
Jason Bittner from Shadow’s Fall side project of a straightforward death metal band.   It’s good and heavy, kind of a classic Cannibal Corpse, Obituary type of metal genre thing happening.   Always good to have a good classic death metal band, especially headed up by someone who sort of helped pioneer the metalcore scene.  Great playing, great production, brutal, metal, but nothing really new… still worthy of getting some airplay!

The Flood
Flood
Independent
11:51 – 3 Tracks
Kind of a hard rock sort of thing… they’re the only unsigned band on the Static-X “Snocore” tour.   I’d have to compare them to Tool.  Musically and vocally… that’s the closest thing that I can come up with. It’s a bit borderline for the Mosh Pit… but I think it’s worth squeezin in!

Sacred Oath
Sacred Oath
Angel Thorne
50:13 – 10 Tracks
A pretty decent thrash/power/prog metal sounding band.   They have a bit of an Iron Maiden thing going on, sounds decent too.   We’ll try n get it on the air!

Brutal Truth
Evolution Through Revolution
Relapse
31:41 – 20 Tracks
Long time coming reunion of Brutal Truth… heck, so many bands getting back together, why not these guys too?   New stuff sounds pretty g0ood… very grindcore, very in your face and that’s just how it should be!

Trigger The Bloodshed
The Great Depression
Metal Blade
32:57 – 11 Tracks
Brutal metal… fast, relentless, British… there’s lots of this type of music out there these days… just all out brutal, fast, in your face metal… it’s getting to be where it’s hard to tell them apart… but we love heavy and brutal on the Mosh Pit… we’ll give it a whirl!

Pestilence
Resurrection Macabre
Mascot
54:40 – 14 Tracks
Whoa… another comeback album!  One of the few brutal bands from the Netherlands… after a 14 year break, they’re back.   Along with Believer and Cynic, Pestilence was one of a few metal bands that added a lil Jazz/fusion stuff into their metal.  Ironic how all three of these bands reformed right around now… eh?   These guys were always the most brutal of the three, and this new album is just all out brutal… awesome stuff!

My Dying Bride
For Lies I Sire
Peaceville
59:54 – 9 Tracks
These guys used to be pretty decent in my opinion, and for the last few albums, they’ve just been to slow and doomy for me to really want to play or listen to for that matter.   This new CD starts off that same way, slow, dark and depressing.   Some of the songs step it up a bit, getting a little abrasive with some vocals, but for the most part, stay pretty dark, slow  and gloomy.   I’m sure as a whole this album is pretty decent, but one track at a time might not cut it.  However, I will be playing some of this on the Mosh Pit… track 4 in particular “Bring Me Victory” gets a bit more “metal”

Exilia
My Own Army
AFM
38:51 – 13 Tracks
This is kind of a solid-rock…”nu-metal” meets Otep… music is a lil heavy, female vox, but mostly a hard rock, semi-chunky metal album.  Not bad, just not really for the Mosh Pit… you should hear this on another station… it’d go great there!!
