New stuff this week… 9/28/09

Arch Enemy
The Root Of All Evil
Century Media
48:58 – 13 Tracks
Newly re-recorded “best of” from the first few albums… but with the current line-up, bigger recording budget and top notch production.  It gives these great songs some new live and a new edge.  While these songs are great to begin with, and the originals are of course still available… I think it’s great to have these refreshed by the current lineup.   It will also probably break some of these almost forgotten tracks into their live shows.  It helps that I’m an Arch Enemy fanboy too.  🙂

Evergreen Terrace
Almost Home
Metal Blade
37:14 – 11 Tracks
This is pretty decent metal… I guess they would fit into the metalcore area… They keep things mostly heavy and aggressive… more on the hardcore side of things with definite metal/thrash influence.  This new release is well produced, not much effing around, there’s a good wall of sound in your face thing happening too.  Annnnndddd…. it gets pretty catchy too.

Alice In Chains
Black Gives Way To Blue
Virgin
54:17 – 11 Tracks
I’ve never been a FAN of AiC… I’ve always thought they were okay, just not a fan… This new album, for not having their front-man anymore… you’d like never notice.  The music and vocals are just right together, and you’d think this came out at their peak.  Songs are easy to listen to, kind of make you want to sing along or tap your foot or whatever.  Catchy choruses… and the classic AiC sound that you would expect… however, it’s not really all that “METAL” like we like on the Mosh Pit… however, fans of metal always seem to like AiC… so we may have to spin something for ya.

Metalocalpyse: Dethklok
Dethalbum II
Williams St.
51:58 – 12 Tracks
While there’s no Coffee Jingle or theme song on here it takes songs that were featured in a lot of the season 2 episodes, and of course makes them full length with full blown production.  The more you hear the songs, the more you appreciate them, and of course, maybe pick up on some of the lyrics which just make it all that much better.  Gene Hoglan is again handling drumming duties with Brendan Small doing everything else.  This is quality metal which just happens to be from a cartoon!

A Storm of Light
Forgive Us Our Trespasses
Neurot
58:17 – 10 Tracks
Strike one… this band is on Neurot records… which is what, the label that Neurosis started?   Not a fan of Neurosis… and Strike 2… long droney 2 minute intro track 1.   And Strike three?  yup, long droney sounding songs.  Of  course this is just my opinion… I’m not a fan of this kind of stuff… I’m sure someone is… and if you are that person and want to hear it on the radio… you know what to do… email or call!

The 69 Eyes
Back In Blood
The End
48:16 – 12 Tracks
Their last album was okay… just not really all that “metal”   And this one again… same deal… good catchy hard rock stuff.   Nice big crisp production, kind of like Marilyn Manson’s more hard rock songs.  It just seems too “poppy” for a metal show…

Five Finger Death Punch
War Is The Answer
Prospect Park
45:13 – 13 Tracks
The first couple of singles that I got for this album were a bit too commercial.  The first track on this one just starts off super catchy and heavy.  The whole album is about 50/50.  Some songs are pretty pokey and slow… very “solid rock”   Then you get to some tracks which are just cool… with huge meaty catchy riffs and angry.  Others are just singy with clean vox.  It’s hard to really put a finger on this album as a whole.  It’s like, bi-polar.    Then the cover of “Bad Company” hmmm… kinda slow… with a band like this, you’d think they would throw a heavier influence on it, but it’s just all slow and emo.   So for a metal fan, there’s about half of kick ass stuff on here and the other half is “emo blah”   For a hard rock fan, it’s got awesome metal heavy stuff and the slower cooler stuff to help you chill out to…. so there ya have it… something for everyone?

Leaves Eyes
Njord
Napalm
52:13 – 12 Tracks
This is one of those “femetal” bands.  The vocals are a bit too “opera-ey” for me and probably for most metal fans.  Some of the music sounds almost like black metal, but really it’s more just kind of euro-prog metal sounding… keyboards filling in a lot of the mix, some decent guitar work with triggered drums… and some folk metal stuff too.   There just doesn’t seem to be any edge it it that a few of these fe-metal bands have these days.

Revocation
Existence Is Futile
Relapse
47:26 – 11 Tracks
You know you have one of those good records when the first few seconds of the first track or two just grab you…. this is how this album is… just fast, technical catchy thrash.  Just like this type of music should be… not too repetitive, fast, catchy and not boring!!

Children of Bodom
Skeltons In The Closet
Spinefarm
52:19 – 17 Tracks
Bodom’s “new” album is pretty much a compilation of all of their covers that they’ve done over the years… with some new ones… I’ve always been a fan of covers, especially when metal bands do a metal cover of a non-metal song… which a lot of these fall into… CCR, Pat Benatar, Billy Idol, Poison.  But also there’s Sepultura, Maiden, Suicidal Tendencies… just about something for everyone!

Becoming
Sonic Revelations
Hard-Mill
40:56 – 11 Tracks
Seemingly an unsigned band from the Bay Area… they kind of have a Slayer/Sepultura thing going on.   Production is basic… a bit punchy… has that small label/unsigned sound… but the music is catchy, thrashy, heavy with some great guitar work.   I’m sure these guys would be great live!

Between The Buried and Me
The Great Misdirect Sampler
Victory
12:53 – 2 Tracks
These guys are like technical prog-core.   It’s a lot to take in, but for just a couple of tracks… really just one track with an intro type thing… they don’t disappoint again!   There’s a lot going on… heavy parts, brutal parts, calmer proggy parts, rock parts, metal parts… just all sorts of good metal parts all mixed together to make up “Obfuscation”

Hatebreed
Hatebreed
E1
33:59 – 15 Tracks
Hatebreed!   It’s Hatebreed… they are their own genre… Metal/Hardcore/thrash.   The new album is just what it should be… fast, catchy, cool breakdowns and Hatebreedcore!  haha.   You like Hatebreed, you’ll like “Hatebreed”  (the name of the album)

New stuff this week… 9/21/09

Hey all… here’s what’s new this week…

Protest the Hero
Gallop Meets The Earth (Live CD/DVD)
Vagrant
50:28 – 11 Tracks
With their last album 2008, PTH cemented themselves a great spot all over the metal community with their technical/prog/death/metal/everything/core.   Fortress was really a great album, and drew more attention to their earlier album Kezia and their sound in general.   This is a live album capturing their last tour.  Sounds good, yet still sounds “live”… meaning that it doesn’t really have a “fixed in the studio” sound…

Shadows Fall
Retribution
Ferret
46:00 – 10 Tracks
This new album is a step up from their last few… I think most people agree and the band may also thing, they were in a bit of a lull… and knew they had to step things up… the competition is greater now than when the pioneered the metalcore, or melodic deathcore sound.   This new one keeps things catchy, heavy, and still melodic… if you gave up on Shadows Fall a couple albums back, it’s time to give them a new chance.

The Sign of the Southern Cross
…Of Mountains and Moonshine
Season of Mist
68:19 – 13 Tracks
Take some Pantera, throw in some Down and CoC… yeah, you got TSOTSC!   I mean, really… it does sound exactly like those three bands mixed up.   Yup… that’s about it.   Not bad… nothing all that new and exciting, but if you like any or all of these 3 bands, you could probably dig these guys.

Insomnium
Across The Dark
Candlelight
45:45 – 8 Tracks
Kind of a dark/folk metal thing going on here…however, some of the stuff is cool and almost thrashy, a little bit prog, and well, almost like some of the older Amorphis stuff… clean vox, growly vox, melodic metal, death metal… a bit of everything.

Every Time I Die
New Junk Aesthetic
Epitaph
31:54 – 11 Tracks
Another one of these bands that’s all “core”  but yet still not too bad.   This has a bit more of the Dillinger Escape Plan thing going on… oh wait, Greg from DEP is on track 2.. hah.   This has a bit more hardcore/punk element than I remember from these guys… then again, I haven’t been a huge fan and could probably be mistaken too…

Ahab
The Divinity of Oceans
Napalm
67:34 – 7 Tracks
Napalm Records calls this “Funeral Nautic Doom Metal”   and once again, they nailed it… kind of sludgey and dark Scandinavian sounding.   But, you put Funeral and Doom along with metal, you know you’re going to get something dark, slow and well, dead.

Riot God
Riot God
Full Belly
59:00 – 14 Tracks
This is a side project from Jim and Bob from Monster Magnet.   It does have a similar sound to Monster Magnet, as in well, it’s hard rock, great guitar work.  Just some good catchy-ish hard rock stuff going on here.

Living Colour
The Chair In The Doorway
Megaforce
46:39 – 13 Tracks
Well, it’s been a while since these guys had a studio album… they did the whole reunion tour(s)… and that must have helped… this new album is pretty cool just like any of their old albums… Catchy, funky, hard rock/metal… Corey Glover’s vocals still sound exactly the same as they did almost 20 years ago.  While not really a metal album, it’s still a great hard rock thing and should probably get a spin or two… at least just to let listeners know this is out there now.

Karnivool
Set Fire To The Hive EP
Sony Music
25:39 – 4 Tracks
A kind of proggy hard rock, well, almost “solid-rock” sounding type of band.  They’re from Australia and were formerly on the Bieler Brothers label and did a tour with Nonpoint and Skindred… on that tour, they sounded a bit more commercial, now they have kind of progged themselves a bit, a little bit more complex and well, more cool in my opinion… still not what I would consider metal, but still not too bad.

Seasons After
Through Tomorrow
Dirtbag
47:54 – 11
Another not quite metal band this week.  Catchy melodic hard rock… singy choruses, some growly parts which also do get kind of thrashy/metal-like… but for the most part, it’s fairly commercial sounding stuff.  The singy stuff outweighs the metal stuff…

Austrian Death Machine
Double Brutal
Metal Blade
52:31 – 24 Tracks
Well, wow, that was fast, ANOTHER ADM disk… this one is funny as hell and has the chops just like the first one!  Catchy thrashy songs themed after Schwarzenegger movies again… Amazing how  Tim Lambesis can just churn out an album like this so fast.  Again… he’s got some great guest guitarists, and disc two features covers that could relate to Ahhhnold movies.

Echoes of Eternity
As Shadows Burn
Nuclear Blast
39:55 – 9 Tracks
Some euro-metal!  The prog-thrashy sound of a typical euro fe-metal band… You know, some catchy prog metal with clean female vocals, usually from somewhere in europe… wait, what!?? what’s this?  They’re from L.A.?  In the US!?  Yup… So, clean, singy female vocals, and for the most part, some catchy thrashy metal backin’ it up.  Almost like Luna Mortis with only clean vox.

Despised Icon
Day of Mourning
Century Media
35:08 – 10 Tracks
New album from these Canucks… Brutal-Core.   Duelling vocals… death growls, hardcore screams… brutal drums and some big meaty riffs… Kind of a mix of hardcore and some death metal… you know, which equals “Brutal core!”  The more I get into this CD… the better it gets… a bit more complex and catchy too…

Vader
Necropolis
Nuclear Blast
33:26 – 11 Tracks
Whoa… new Vader!   Pretty much a whole new lineup too.   Still fast, brutal, evil, catchy and all around extreme!  You still can’t go wrong with Vader.   Vocals seem to be a bit more raw, but just right!

UDO
Dominator
AFM
47:19 – 10 Tracks
A great classic metal sound, and classic metal vocals from UDO himself!   It’s almost like ACDC of metal… albums are all good, songs are decent, and you know what you get… At Udo’s age, it’s cool to see he hasn’t pussed out at all either.   Great heavy catchy songs and almost sounding like Judas Priest in some parts…

New Stuff this week… 9/14/09

Ace Frehley
Anomaly
Bronx Born
54:44 – 12 Tracks
Aside from the maze of CD packaging… i think it folds out into some sort of space ship or pyramid or something… This is a pretty decent straightforward hard rock album.   A bit of a throwback to 20 years ago… which is about when his last solo album was… Production is tight, Anton Fix from David Letterman’s band performs on drums… Nothing really new and exciting, but it’s something good for the fans!

Crossbreed
KE 101
Driven
42:58 – 11 Tracks
You might remember these guys from a few years ago.. they had the whole Rammstein industrial/electronic/metal thing going on.  That fad sort of faded out, probably a little too soon, there was still a lot of decent stuff or whatever… anyways, most of the music in the genre is pretty listenable, kind of catchy and “has a beat you can dance to”  haha  Some of this album gets pretty heavy and “loud”  however, the vocals don’t quite get abrasive enough to call it metal… maybe a moment here and there, but overall the vocals keep it pretty commercialized… probably worth playing, especially kicking off the show after Something Wonderful!

Porcupine Tree
The Incident
Roadrunner
55:14 – 14 Tracks
While these guys aren’t metal, some of their songs have some metal moments… this album is pretty much one big long song, split up into parts.   It’s mostly just some prog rock, which is great for the fans… I’m not sure if this is an album for a first time P-Tree listener to get.   There’s a lot of slow, emo-ish stuff on this album… but for an epic prog rock song, I guess that’s what it’s supposed to have.   I’ll try and dig something up to play a sample of that is a bit more rockin’.

Ten Man Push
Ten Man Push
Deer Down Music
40:33 – 10 Tracks
A fairly commercialized “solid rock” sounding band.   Decent at what they do, sounds a bit like Disturbed/Godsmack if I had to put a label on it.   Probably not great for the ultimate brutal metal show that the Mosh Pit is lately!  haha.

rodrigo y gabriela
11:11
ATO Records
45:45 – 11 Tracks
While this isn’t really metal either (like the Porcupine Tree)  this one certainly has almost a metal vibe… or something I think metal fans could appreciate.   They have a metal backround, but play classical guitar… and if you can shred on an acoustic/classical guitar, it’s damn near metal.   Each track is dedicated and inspired by a certain artist… such as Santana, Hendrix, and others in various genres… “Atman”  with guest Alex Skolnick is inspired by Dimebag.

Kittie
In The Black
E1
40:57 – 12 Tracks
I always have a soft spot for bands that have visited WORT, live during the Mosh Pit.   And it’s high time that these gals put out a new album…. once thought of as a gimmick, I think they’ve shown that they are the real deal… endless touring for all those years, album after album after EP…   they’re finally back with a new metal release…. musically it carries that new wave of american metal sound (they’re from Canada, so it can be “north american” metal, right?)   The abrasive vocals from Morgan are damn near Black Metal, and her clean vocals still sound like that little girl that started the band… it’s quite a contrast, but with Kittie it works.  The music is really some good catchy metal!

White Wizzard
High Speed GTO (EP)
Earache
26:55 – 7 Tracks
This isn’t what I expected to hear on Earache records… it’s basically a straightforward classic  metal sound with some clean singing vocals.  It’s just good ol fashioned like old Priest, Queensryche, along those lines… just something you don’t really hear anymore!

Armed for Apocalypse
Defeat
Metal Blade
42:12 – 9 Tracks
A bit brutal-core, a bit doom metal, a bit death groove metal… they are heavy… whether it’s fast brutal stuff, or slow n sludgey, they have both, and it’s just plain HEAVY… they even have some thrashy stuff too… it’s like a metal smorgasbord… something for everyone!  😀

The Network
Bishop Kent Manning
Metal Blade
42:27 – 10 Tracks
I was never sure how to classify a band like this… I guess in general terms this is a Dillinger Escape Plan type of band… raw, abrasive, kind of punky, kind of metal-y, in your face, loud and grating.   To me, I can’t take more than a few songs of this in a row, it’s just so in your face, I feel the need to say, “yo, dude back off a little bit”  hah… This was typically the type of band/music that’s been on Relapse records… yaknowwhatimean?

Sonata Arctica
The Days of Grays
Nuclear Blast
53:06 – 12 Tracks
And to go to the complete opposite of the metal spectrum as “The Network” above… we go to prog/power metal veterans, Sonata Arctica… they used to be the masters of this genre, then the whole genre got kind of tiring… they still plug along… this album is fairly complex… very epic and symphonic sounding…  Actually this is okay to listen to… a few albums they had in the middle of their career, to me, were just blah, kind of like they were phoning in this or that for a power metal album.   So, as a euro-power metal band/album goes, this one isn’t too bad… it’s probably best to listen to the whole thing at once at some point in your life… hah

Dying Fetus
Descend Into Depravity
Relapse
33:32 – 8 Tracks
Probably one of the top death metal bands of our time… Dying Fetus are back!  Brutal, catchy, heavy, heavy and brutal!  Oh, and technical and catchy too!   This is one of those albums, from the first note, you know that there isn’t any fucking around, and that there won’t be…. Yup… Good stuff!
