New stuff this week…5/31/10

Masterplan
Time To Be King
AFM
44:58 – 10 Tracks
These guys never really fell into the boring power metal trap… a lot of the stuff from the late 90’s just got boring and lacked any power. (Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, etc).   This band still has some power and a little bit of a throwback to some of the Whitesnake genre of hard rock.  (As I just learned… this was formed in 2001 when two guys were fired from Helloween)  A good full on power metal thing going on, big full sound, good singing vocals but with an edge, and not too much fucking around make this a well rounded power metal album.  http://www.myspace.com/masterplanmetal

Black Tusk
Taste The Sin
Relapse
34:08 – 10 Tracks
A bit of that new wave of heavy stoner metal… you know, kind of like Mastodon… but sludgier… and not quite as sludgey as say, oh, Crowbar.  It’s good and heavy.  I’m not normally a fan of the sludgy stuff, but this seems to work better than the typical sludge.  It edges out of the sludge enough to keep it interesting.  It has the catchiness that Mastodon seems to have, but throws a layer of dirty metal on top of it.  http://www.myspace.com/blacktusk

Clinging To The Trees Of A Forest Fire
Songs of Ill Hope And Desperation (Sampler)
Prosthetic
4:55 – 3 Tracks
Grindcore… heavy grindcore… just an all on grindy noisy assault.  Short songs, all over the place, yet all still together as a lot of these type of bands manage to do.   It’s good, but nothing really that original, or something I’d want to listen to for a long time.  (that’s why it’s good that the songs are short!)  http://www.myspace.com/clingingtothetreesofaforestfire

Danzig
“Deth Red Sabaoth” Digital Sampler
The End Records
8:12 – 2 Tracks
A good example of what Danzig is all about.   You can listen to Danzig all you want on albums, but seeing him live… he really does bring it out, and it’s good that there’s some new material out now… which is a good excuse to tour too, right?   This new stuff is a throwback to the older stuff, but new sounding as well.   He’s following the formula of what makes his stuff good… If you like Danzig, I think you’ll like this new stuff.  http://www.danzig-verotik.com/

Necronomicon
The Return Of The Witch
Napalm Records
41:00 – 9 Tracks
If the band photos on their website are any indication, these guys are pissed off about something… and it shows in the music too.  It’s some good classic Death metal with some blackened tinge to it.   It’s heavy, dark, kind of technical, and yes, for the metal fan, just a bit catchy too (that’s what you get with some awesome riffs over beating double bass drums)  http://www.myspace.com/necronomiconmetal

Pain
Cynic Paradise
Nuclear Blast
46:19 – 12 Tracks
Kind of an industrial metal thing…. it’s heavy, it’s electronic, has mostly clean distorted vocals with a few abrasive screaming vocals mixed in.  A definite electronic industrial vibe with the synth and guitar sound… heck, everything on some tracks sounds all “Rammstein-ish”    It’s pretty much a one man project from the frontman of Hypocrisy.   So, there’s a good metal influence, but it really is an outlet for a totally different genre.  Decent industrial stuff though!  http://www.painworldwide.com/

Pretty Maids
Pandemonium
Frontiers
49:39 – 11 Tracks
Well, these guys never actually went away… been together since 1991… while with a name like Pretty Maids, I’ve always discounted them as one of those 80’s hair bands… but they are actually from Denmark, and seem to be more than just hair metal.   Catchy songs, lots of keyboards… they seem more like a power metal band these days.  The only original members are the singer and guitar player (everyone else is replaceable, right? hahah)  It’s not bad for what it is… it’s not all that much for Mosh Pit material…. borderline probably, but you’ll probably get a sample of it. 🙂  http://www.prettymaids.dk/

Psychostick
The Digital Sampler
Rock Ridge Music
10:56 – 3 Tracks
Three songs… again, funny stuff… heavy humorcore.  (“Cockblock,” “Tuff Luv,” and “Isong” are the tracks)  What else can you say?  http://psychostick.com/

Silent Civilian
Ghost Stories
Mediaskare/Century Media
47:46 – 11 Tracks
Just saw these guys open for Fear Factory on Saturday… and they were pretty good!   They sound like a heavier Unearth/Trivium.   Great stage energy, catchy heavy songs… I guess it could be called metalcore… but on the heaver side.  There are some clean vocals mixed in, a breakdown here and there… but I didn’t see anyone karate dancing in the pit, so that was a good thing.   http://www.myspace.com/silentcivilian

The Funeral Pyre
Vultures At Dawn
Prosthetic
15:51 – 3 Tracks
Classic  old school sounding black metal… but!  there’s always a but, right? It’s not that big of a deal, the production is clean, it’s probably a bit heavier… but it’s got that dark, cold, evil black metal sound… which is especially cool from a band from California!  http://www.myspace.com/thefuneralpyre

Whitechapel
A New Era Of Corruption
Metal Blade
41:20 – 11 Tracks
Well, we talked about this album a lot in the WORT studio a few weeks ago when the band dropped by for a visit.  There’s just something about this band that appeals to the karate arm swingin’ kids and the old school metal heads.  It’s heavy, thrashy and it is even catchy in parts too.   It’s crisply produced, a big wall of metal blowing through your speakers.   You can just feel the energy that they exude in their live shows too.

New stuff this week… 5/17/10

Hey all…  Matt will be out next week, so no new stuff or reviews, but Mike will have an awesome fill-in show on 5/24!

Aeon
Path Of Fire
Metal Blade
41:47 – 11 Tracks
This is some good quality in your face evil death metal… reminds me a lot of Cannibal Corpse, but maybe just a bit more complex (you know, like more guitar solos and a bit more technical).   While they are from Sweden, they aren’t just another clone of the melodic death scene there… it really is an extension of good American sounding death metal.  http://www.aeon666.com/

Anew Revolution
iMerika
E1 Entertainment
Not too sure about this band… they are very much on the active rock/commercial scene, which we really try to stay away from.  Without a big station in town that plays this stuff, yeah, we’d probably spin this a few times, it’s catchy, heavy and all that, but it’s just not for the Mosh Pit  http://www.myspace.com/anewrevolution

Avenged Sevenfold
“Nightmare” single
Warner Bros
6:16 – 1 Track
First track from the new A7X album… Drummer (The Rev) died, Dream Theater’s Portnoy filling in on the album and on their tour… Overall, for this track, it’s your standard A7X… catchy rockin’ riffs, mixed in with some catchy metal stuff… with that emo-ey vocals… Follows their formula well… Portnoy doesn’t really stand out, as he is really there as a tribute to The Rev… nothing bad, nothing all that new.  http://www.avengedsevenfold.com/

The Devil’s Blood
The Time of No Time Evermore
Vans Records
54:35 – 11 Tracks
I’m not really sure what to think of this… it’s kind of a classic rock sounding band with female vocals… occult based themes… but for me?  the Mosh Pit?  we’re more about metal muuusic, not as much on just metal “themes”   Musically, as I mentioned, classic rock-ish, more along the lines of the tripped out Sabbath songs… very “classic” sounding in music and production.  You really might think this is from the 70’s!    http://www.myspace.com/thedevilsblood

Dew-Scented
Invocation Sampler
Prosthetic Records
13:58 – 3 Tracks
Ever since seeing these guys at Metal Fest a bunch of years ago, I’ve been a believer… this blackened thrash thing is one of my favorite sub-genres going on, and Dew-Scented does it just right… a lot of Slayer influence with some more dark evil sounding stuff, some really catchy riffage, and a good catchy thrash sound with abrasive vocals… this all comes together in a cohesive greatness!   http://www.myspace.com/dewscented

Exodus
Exhibit B: The Human Condition
Nuclear Blast
73:52 – 12 Tracks
This is part B… obviously the followup to their 2007 album… and, it’s like this band has only gotten better with age…yes they’ve had their lineup changes, but they are heavy and thrashy and just tight as hell.  Big long complex tracks, with some of the most metal riffing ever put down on 1’s and 0’s.   An instant classic, has the signature Exodus sound and they don’t seem to be letting up! http://www.myspace.com/exodus

Fear Factory
“Final Exit” Single
Candlelight
3:33 – 1 Track
I guess it’s cool to release a single since they’re coming to the area on tour in a couple weeks…  the nature of the Mosh Pit is to play a bunch of tracks from each album, so going by what single gets fed to us… is a bit silly… but it’s a good reminder for me to play some more stuff from the new album, and since I’m a fan of FF and they’re coming to town soon, with the Mosh Pit giving tix away… why not?  But, this track has a lot more clean vocals and is more sounding like from their 3rd or 4th, more commercial sounding album, as most of the rest of this new release is much more “Demanufacture” than anything else.   http://www.fearfactorymusic.com/

Howl
Full Of Hell
Relapse
43:31 – 9 Tracks
Kind of like a Mastodon on steroids… just has that power thrashy stoner metal band feel… you know, like High on Fire, and bands like that.  Takes the stoner metal, Sabbath type of sound, throws in some Motorhead and some catchy melody type stuff, and it all works well.   http://www.myspace.com/howlheavymetal

Lightning Swords Of Death
The Extradimensional Wound
Metal Blade
44:06 – 8 Tracks
A good mix between black metal, traditional death metal and thrash too!… it’s dark, gloomy, yet still fast and intense and a bit thrashy… it feels cold and dark, like good black metal should!   There’s a bit of that Satyricon catchiness in here, with the dark sounding stuff of any of that old school Norwegian black metal…  You wouldn’t expect a band like this to be from LA… it’s not cold and dark there!    http://www.myspace.com/lightningswordsofdeath

Misery Index
Heirs To Theivery
Relapse
34:21 – 11 Tracks
As with the Aeon above… this is some good quality classic sounding Death Metal… in that save vein as Cannibal Corpse, however, again, a bit more technical, and a bit melodic in parts… but that’s really just in some guitar solos… everything else is just all out brutal! http://www.myspace.com/miseryindex

Sodom
Agent Orange Re-issue
Steamhammer/SPV
40:12 – 9 Tracks
I can’t say I’m too familiar with the older stuff from Sodom, but having a re-issue is a good way to help me with that, right?  Well, this is some pretty good quality old school thrashy stuff…  I assume this is a classic from this band, their third… from 1989… so they had a couple albums under their belt, and before grunge came in and ruined everything.  I’m liking what I’m hearing… just a good example of the quality of thrash metal at the time.   http://www.myspace.com/sodom

Taproot
Plead The Fifth
Victory Records
40:18 – 11 Tracks
I will have to echo what I said above in the mini-review for Anew Revolution, but this is just a bit more nu-metal-y than that.   Yes, it has its catchy-ness, but it’s a lot more commercial, if not, perfect for a typical Warped Tour type band… ugh.  Good at what they do, just not good for the Mosh Pit.  http://www.myspace.com/taproot
To Speak Of Wolves
Myself < Letting Go
Solid State
Kind of typical for a SolidState band… mostly heavy metalc0re, with the emo-ish chorus… so it’s heavy, melodic, a little catchy, and for a typical modern metalcore band, has a lot of different influences happening.   http://www.myspace.com/tospeakofwolves

New stuff this week… 5/10/10

Brain Drill
Quantum Catastrophe
Metal Blade
41:52 – 8 Tracks
A great mix of some classic traditional death metal and a bit of the technical “core” stuff… I mean, just some of the guitar work is all that makes it a little bit core… with some meedley meedley parts mixed in… otherwise, this is just all out full on brutal death metal like mom used to hate… haha.   So yeah… it’s pretty good… in your face (and technical) stuff. http://www.myspace.com/braindrill

Levi Werstler
Avalanche Of Worms
Magna Carta
41:13 – 12 Tracks
The two axe-men from Daath have teamed up with some other dudes to do an album for Magna Carta records… musically it’s pretty similar to Daath… not quite as intense on the speed/drumming… and it’s all instrumental… so it’s pretty cool.  Daath is catchy on its own, and it’s mainly due to the guitar work, so you can count on some more melodic stuff, not brutal… and catchy!   http://www.myspace.com/leviwerstler

Beneath The Sky
In Loving Memory
Victory Records
43:06 – 10 Tracks
This Brutal-core band is back… almost a grindy-brutal metal core mix going on… then you throw in the melodic clean vocal chorus stuff… which oddly seems to work with the level of brutality that’s going on… at least the transitions in and out of the clean stuff seem to be better than your average “core” band.   The clean parts are a lot like Killswitch Engage, but there are a lot fewer… and more brutal!   http://www.myspace.com/beneaththesky

Deftones
Diamond Eyes

Reprise
41:15 – 11 Tracks
It’s never been a secret… I’m not a fan of this band… however, I do have some respect for helping forge their own genre… (even though so much crap came from it)… they sold records and in this business I guess that’s what is important… oh, as well as creating your own identity!   This album seems to follow their formula… of emo-charged grungy nu metal.  A bit commercial for the likes of the Mosh Pit… but some listeners are fans… right?  http://www.deftones.com/

Imagika
Portrait Of A Hangman
Metalville
53:38 – 11 Tracks
Take some Annihilator, some oh, euro proggy thrash metal… and classic heavier thrash (exodus, death angel?) and you have some Imagika…. we really liked their last effort, and this one is some heavy, catchy, thrashy goodness.   They are actually from THE Bay Area (San Jose)… and they have the chops… been together since 1993… probably one of the better kept secrets of Thrash from the Bay area… Good stuff  http://www.myspace.com/imagikametal

Judas Priest
British Steel 30th Anniversary Edition
Sony Records
Disc 1:  44:41 – 11 Tracks
Disc 2: 75:46 – 15 Tracks
What more can be said about British Steel?   30 years, and it’s just as cool as when it came out (yeah, I’m that old, but I wasn’t really into metal back when I was 8 years old! )  I could imagine what someone thought as they slapped this vinyl on their turntable, and cranked up their big ol 3-way speaker towers… Or throwing it on their all in one Fisher stereo… heh… Just instant classic and classic and relevant to this day… this 30th anniversary package has one disk that’s the original album remastered… and disc two is the album live… last year for the 30th anniversary concert.  The concert seems a bit over-produced… but definitely LIVE!   http://judaspriest.com/

Korn
“Oildale (Leave Me Alone)”
Roadrunner
4:02 – 1 Track
It’s a single… It’s Korn.  They aren’t the same as old Korn, but it’s still unmistakeably Korn!   It’s got a lot of elements that are very similar to the older Korn stuff…  http://modlife.com/korn

Lacrimas Profundere
The Grandiose Nowhere
Napalm Records
42:43 – 12 Tracks
I haven’t ever really been able to get into these guys… kind of a definitive version of Goth Metal (hard rock)   A bit like H I M… or some of that middle-era Moonspell.   I just don’t really see this working on the Mosh Pit… they are good at what they do… it’s catchy… and should be more commercially viable… I’m just not sure…  you’ll probably hear a snippet or something.  http://www.myspace.com/lacrimasprofundere

Skyforger
Kurbads
Metal Blade
49:36 – 11 Tracks
I can’t think of any other metal band from Latvia… these guys are listed as “folk/pagan metal”  Usually when I think of Folk metal, I think of the bouncy accordion stuff…which isn’t in the first track… but as it moves on, there’s some flutey stuff and some bagpipes, but it’s not the main focus… just some accents and stuff.  Overall, it’s more along the lines of Amon Amarth… catchy, heavy with folkie fun stuff!   http://www.skyforger.lv/

Solution 45
For Aeons Past
AFM Records
61:54 – 10 Tracks
Do you like Soilwork?  Hmmmm… You’ll probably like these guys!  It’s a bit of a Swedish metal supergroup… featuring Jani Stefanovic (Miseration  and Essence Of Sorrow) and includes former Scar Symmetry vocalist Christian Älvestam. Other members of Solution .45 include Tom Gardiner (Hateform), Anders Edlund (Angel Blake), and Rolf Pilve (Miseration, Essence Of Sorrow).  (I stole that from Wikipedia)…. It’s got the whole Gothenburg formula… clean vocals, heavy screamed vocals, great melodies, cool heavy stuff… It’s a bit more on the melodic era of the Soilwork sound… http://www.myspace.com/solution45
