Hey all… Matt will be out next week, so no new stuff or reviews, but Mike will have an awesome fill-in show on 5/24!
Aeon
Path Of Fire
Metal Blade
41:47 – 11 Tracks
This is some good quality in your face evil death metal… reminds me a lot of Cannibal Corpse, but maybe just a bit more complex (you know, like more guitar solos and a bit more technical). While they are from Sweden, they aren’t just another clone of the melodic death scene there… it really is an extension of good American sounding death metal. http://www.aeon666.com/
Anew Revolution
iMerika
E1 Entertainment
Not too sure about this band… they are very much on the active rock/commercial scene, which we really try to stay away from. Without a big station in town that plays this stuff, yeah, we’d probably spin this a few times, it’s catchy, heavy and all that, but it’s just not for the Mosh Pit http://www.myspace.com/anewrevolution
Avenged Sevenfold
“Nightmare” single
Warner Bros
6:16 – 1 Track
First track from the new A7X album… Drummer (The Rev) died, Dream Theater’s Portnoy filling in on the album and on their tour… Overall, for this track, it’s your standard A7X… catchy rockin’ riffs, mixed in with some catchy metal stuff… with that emo-ey vocals… Follows their formula well… Portnoy doesn’t really stand out, as he is really there as a tribute to The Rev… nothing bad, nothing all that new. http://www.avengedsevenfold.com/
The Devil’s Blood
The Time of No Time Evermore
Vans Records
54:35 – 11 Tracks
I’m not really sure what to think of this… it’s kind of a classic rock sounding band with female vocals… occult based themes… but for me? the Mosh Pit? we’re more about metal muuusic, not as much on just metal “themes” Musically, as I mentioned, classic rock-ish, more along the lines of the tripped out Sabbath songs… very “classic” sounding in music and production. You really might think this is from the 70’s! http://www.myspace.com/thedevilsblood
Dew-Scented
Invocation Sampler
Prosthetic Records
13:58 – 3 Tracks
Ever since seeing these guys at Metal Fest a bunch of years ago, I’ve been a believer… this blackened thrash thing is one of my favorite sub-genres going on, and Dew-Scented does it just right… a lot of Slayer influence with some more dark evil sounding stuff, some really catchy riffage, and a good catchy thrash sound with abrasive vocals… this all comes together in a cohesive greatness! http://www.myspace.com/dewscented
Exodus
Exhibit B: The Human Condition
Nuclear Blast
73:52 – 12 Tracks
This is part B… obviously the followup to their 2007 album… and, it’s like this band has only gotten better with age…yes they’ve had their lineup changes, but they are heavy and thrashy and just tight as hell. Big long complex tracks, with some of the most metal riffing ever put down on 1’s and 0’s. An instant classic, has the signature Exodus sound and they don’t seem to be letting up! http://www.myspace.com/exodus
Fear Factory
“Final Exit” Single
Candlelight
3:33 – 1 Track
I guess it’s cool to release a single since they’re coming to the area on tour in a couple weeks… the nature of the Mosh Pit is to play a bunch of tracks from each album, so going by what single gets fed to us… is a bit silly… but it’s a good reminder for me to play some more stuff from the new album, and since I’m a fan of FF and they’re coming to town soon, with the Mosh Pit giving tix away… why not? But, this track has a lot more clean vocals and is more sounding like from their 3rd or 4th, more commercial sounding album, as most of the rest of this new release is much more “Demanufacture” than anything else. http://www.fearfactorymusic.com/
Howl
Full Of Hell
Relapse
43:31 – 9 Tracks
Kind of like a Mastodon on steroids… just has that power thrashy stoner metal band feel… you know, like High on Fire, and bands like that. Takes the stoner metal, Sabbath type of sound, throws in some Motorhead and some catchy melody type stuff, and it all works well. http://www.myspace.com/howlheavymetal
Lightning Swords Of Death
The Extradimensional Wound
Metal Blade
44:06 – 8 Tracks
A good mix between black metal, traditional death metal and thrash too!… it’s dark, gloomy, yet still fast and intense and a bit thrashy… it feels cold and dark, like good black metal should! There’s a bit of that Satyricon catchiness in here, with the dark sounding stuff of any of that old school Norwegian black metal… You wouldn’t expect a band like this to be from LA… it’s not cold and dark there! http://www.myspace.com/lightningswordsofdeath
Misery Index
Heirs To Theivery
Relapse
34:21 – 11 Tracks
As with the Aeon above… this is some good quality classic sounding Death Metal… in that save vein as Cannibal Corpse, however, again, a bit more technical, and a bit melodic in parts… but that’s really just in some guitar solos… everything else is just all out brutal! http://www.myspace.com/miseryindex
Sodom
Agent Orange Re-issue
Steamhammer/SPV
40:12 – 9 Tracks
I can’t say I’m too familiar with the older stuff from Sodom, but having a re-issue is a good way to help me with that, right? Well, this is some pretty good quality old school thrashy stuff… I assume this is a classic from this band, their third… from 1989… so they had a couple albums under their belt, and before grunge came in and ruined everything. I’m liking what I’m hearing… just a good example of the quality of thrash metal at the time. http://www.myspace.com/sodom
Taproot
Plead The Fifth
Victory Records
40:18 – 11 Tracks
I will have to echo what I said above in the mini-review for Anew Revolution, but this is just a bit more nu-metal-y than that. Yes, it has its catchy-ness, but it’s a lot more commercial, if not, perfect for a typical Warped Tour type band… ugh. Good at what they do, just not good for the Mosh Pit. http://www.myspace.com/taproot
To Speak Of Wolves
Myself < Letting Go
Solid State
Kind of typical for a SolidState band… mostly heavy metalc0re, with the emo-ish chorus… so it’s heavy, melodic, a little catchy, and for a typical modern metalcore band, has a lot of different influences happening. http://www.myspace.com/tospeakofwolves
