New Stuff This Week… 1/28/13

Circle II Circle
Season Will Fall
Eagle Rock Entertainment
http://www.circle2circle.net/
These guys have always been solid, sort of picking up where Savatage left (Zak Stevens at least)  Just a classic metal thing, great guitar solos, vocals, and their new drummer is none other than Madison native Adam Sagan (Into Eternity, Halcyon, Infernaeon)

Funeral For A Friend
Conduit
The End Records
http://blog.funeralforafriend.com/
Hardcore-ish with metal stuff, and some metalcore type stuff going on too.  Catchy riffs, and being hardcore and all… the songs are quick and to the point.

Maelstrom
It Was Predestined
Itchy Metal Entertainment
http://www.myspace.com/metalmaelstrom
Thrashy and melodic… just a 3 song EP… but it seems pretty cool, vocals are mostly shouted , some growls and screams… lots of cool guitar work too… some brutal drumming in parts too.

Illnath
4 Shades of me
Pitch Black Records
http://www.illnath.dk/
Sort of a melodic death thing, female fronted… hard to top Arch Enemy (i’m a fanboy) but it’s hard not to compare, as they both have brutal female vocals!  This isn’t quite on par with Arch Enemy, but it does have some catchy riffs, a bit of melodic death, some thrash and some just straight ahead metal… oh and some brutal stuff too.  Good stuff.

Jess and the Ancient Ones

Astral Sabbat
Svart Records
http://www.jessandtheancientones.com/
A bit of a psychedelic, 70’s hard rock/prog rock type thing.  just a 3 song EP… with one track coming in at about 15 mins.  Yeah, definitely a throwback.  Pretty cool when taken in whole.  Not sure if it’s all that great for our metal show though.
Hatebreed
The Divinity of Purpose
Razor & Tie
http://hatebreed.com/
What’s this?  New Hatebreed?  What do you think it sounds like?  If you guess “Hatebreed”  You win!  As the “AC/DC” of hardcore, you know what you’re getting and yup, you get Hatebreed with another good album.  Some actual melodic guitars layered in here, but with the same catchy hardcore stuff that’s happening.
Cult of Luna
Vertikal
Density
http://cultofluna.com/
A lot of comparisons to Isis with this band/album.  I can safely say I’m not a fan of Isis or this genre of I guess what is called “post metal” now.  Kind of long, drawn out sludgey, doomy atmospheric, and just not seeming to get to a point.  A lot of people like this stuff and it is “metal”  so you’ll hear some of this on the Mosh Pit.

Ancient VVisdom
Deathlike
Prosthetic
http://www.ancientvvisdom.com/
A sort of down tempo rock type thing.  One reviewer calls them “rock n roll and blues”  Nothing really heavy here at all, almost a 70’s rock thing, or a doomy classic rock.

The Bronx
IV
ATO
http://thebronxxx.com/bx4/
A bit of a more uptempo hardcore punk thing.  These guys have been around for a while now… Catchier, more accessible type stuff… they’ve been on the Warped Tour a few times

Gloria Morti
Lateral Constraint
Metal Blade
http://www.gloriamorti.com/
An extreme blackened death band from Finland.  This band is not fucking around.   I’d say it’s closest comparison is Behemoth.  Just a wall of brutal metal rife with brutal riffs, off the hook drumming and brutal vocals

Zombified
Carnage Slaughter and Death
Metal Blade
https://www.facebook.com/zombifieduk
Brutal death metal… old school, from Belfast Ireland!  Some cool cookie monster vocals and some terrifying screams too.

Edge of Attack
Edge of Attack
Spread The Metal Records (Asher PR)
http://www.edgeofattack.com/
A mix of some classic thrash and power metal… female fronted, and the thrashy/power metal vocals are both represented well.  Clean vox with some edge to them in the heavier parts
Chariots of The Gods
Tides of War
Self Release (Asher PR)
https://www.facebook.com/chariotsofthegods
Melodic death/thrash metal.  Thrashy, with a hint of metalcore, but not really going there.  The metalcore is just the basis of the melodic guitar stuff any maybe emo singy stuff isn’t here, it’s all metal and in your face.  Good stuff.

New stuff this week… 1/21/13

Lightning Swords of Death
Baphometic Chaosium
Metal Blade Records
https://www.facebook.com/lightningswordsofdeath
HEAVY and Brutal… a little bit grindy, and overall, blackened death metal.  It’s definitely something that will get you headbanging and ready to punch a kid wearing skinny jeans.

Sevendust
“Decay”
ADA
http://www.sevendust.com/
If you’ve heard Sevendust before, you know what they are all about… heavy meaty riffs with some catchy vocals with the occasional shout/growls coming from the drum riser (Morgan Rose)  This song fits that formula, it’s classic Sevendust.  They never did go anywhere, and they are sticking true to their form.

Evil Army
I, Commander (7″ EP)
Hells Headbangers
http://www.myspace.com/evilarmy
A reissue from 2006.  Raw punked up Thrashy type stuf.

Dead Label
Sense Of Slaughter
Nuerra Records
https://www.facebook.com/DeadLabel
Metal from Ireland!  Catchy Thrashed up metal… kind of a Machine Head, Pantera, Lamb of God “american” metal sounding band… and their secret weapon?  A female drummer that slays.  Catchy heavy guitar riffs and shouted screamed vocals.  Good stuff.

Helloween
Straight Out Of Hell
The End Records
http://www.helloween.org/
From one of the bands that helped invent power metal… This album proves that these guys aren’t letting up, they’ve had the same lineup for over 10 years now and this is full of cool metal riffs, great vocals and just the right amount of keyboards.  It’s real metal here folks!

The Resistance
Rise From Treason (EP)
Eagle Rock Entertainment
https://www.facebook.com/theresistanceswe/
Quite the all-star Swedish lineup for this band.  Two former guitarissts from In Flames/Dimension Zero, drummer from Carnal Forge and singer from The Haunted.  This sounds like some older In Flames meets the Haunted, some more raw, yet melodic thrashy death metal.  Great stuff!

Vex
Memorious
Horror Pain Gore Death
http://www.vexband.com/
Kind of a black metal… it has that cold guitar sound, not-so-great production, yet still heavy and brutal with a bit of melody too.  Almost like a poor man’s older Satyricon.

Holy Grail
Ride The Void
Prosthetic
http://holygrailofficial.com/
Thrashed up Power metal… riffs galore, vocal melodies and taking some of the stuff that Avenged Sevenf0ld does great (catchy stuff with great vocals) but Holy Grail metals it up a bit more… hopefully bridging a gap between the kids that love A7X and the dudes that wear the denim vests with patches.

W.E.T.
Rise Up
Frontiers
https://www.facebook.com/JeffScottSoto
Jeff Scott Soto and a bunch of guys from the band Eclipse

Crashdiet
The Savage Playground
Frontiers
http://www.crashdiet.org/
A swedish version of Motley Crue?  A modern take of sleaze metal… good stuff as there really isn’t that much of this type of stuff that’s “new” lately that’s actually pretty cool  (this fits all of the above)

We Came As Romans
Hope EP
Equal Vision
http://www.wecameasromans.com/
Another one of those melodic metalcore bands… lots of singy vocals… and stuff like that.  There’s actually some cool electronic stuff thrown in one of the heavier parts, but then it goes back to the clean emo singing.  Eh.

Devourment
Fifty Ton War Machine (Single)
Relapse
https://www.facebook.com/DevourmentOfficial
If you’re going to call your first single “Fifty Ton War Machine,” you better live up to that… and this sure does.  Heavy, brutal wall of metal riffs and drumming blasts coming at you.  It’s not breaking any new ground, but it’s a good solid throw of death metal.

Big package from Bakerteam Records
2012 Releases: Bejelit, Lahmia, Mirrorman, Cadaveria, Hollow Haze, Malnatt

Infernal Poetry
Paraphilia
Bakerteam
http://www.infernalpoetry.com/site/
An Italian melodic death metal band, pretty good stuff, nothing really new though… great to have a new label sending us stuff!   It’s got some cool thrashy stuff, brutal stuff, and yeah, catchy and melodic stuff too.  Judging by song titles, these guys don’t take themselves too seriously (“Barf Together”  “the Copy/Paste Syndrome”)

Straight on Target
Pharmakos
Bakerteam
https://www.facebook.com/StraightOnTarget
Mostly brutal death metal, pretty in your face and a breakdown or two.

Karnya
Coverin’ Thoughts
Bakerteam
https://www.facebook.com/karnyaband
kind of a prog metal thing/power metal.  Keyboards, yet, still heavy, some songs are not so heavy, but definitely musically diverse, lots of solos, clean vocals with a little bit of edge to them.  Probably like the heavier stuff from Dream Theater (with more metal sounding vocals)

Valor
The Yonder Answer
Pitch Black Records
http://www.valor.gr/
Greek power metal.  Mostly normal, run of the mill power metal, and some stuff gets some symphonic stuff and piano, but overall, just a metal band from Greece.

Alpha Tiger
Beneath The Surface
Century Media
http://www.alphatiger.de/en/
German Power Metal, a little bit Maiden-like, and the typical German Power Metal band too.  Over the top vocals and interesting music… something about it… just makes it a little different than the typical power metal band.  Maybe just a little bit heavier on the riffs, really cool drum fills, not quite the same exact formula.

Necrowretch
Putrid Death Sorcery
Century Media
http://necrowretch.net/
“Putrid Death Metal”  This is some brutal old school sounding grindy death metal stuff.  Raw, fast, and cold.

Heimdall
Aeneid
Scarlet Records
Power Metal with a heavier edge.

Scarlet records is now sending us stuff… they caught up from last year with:

HOTEL DIABLO – The Return To Psycho, California
SOUND STORM -Immortalia
WILDESTARR – A Tale Tell Heart
WHYZDOM – Blind?
KILL RITUAL – The Serpentine Ritual
SECRET SPHERE – Portrait Of A Dying Heart
SOLISIA – UniverSeasons
RED ROSE – On The Cusp Of Change

New stuff this week…. 1/14/13

Nightfall
Cassiopeia
Metal Blade Records
http://www.nightfallstar.com/
Kind of a melodic death metal sort of thing, but then throw in some goth type stuff (like cooler Moonspell stuff) and some symphonic black metal stuff (like some Dimmu Borgir)… great release so soon in the new year!

Incite
All Out War
Minus Head
https://www.facebook.com/INCITEband
Following in dear ol stepdad’s footsteps… Max Cavalera’s “kid” is the front man of this band..  Quality groove metal, aggressive and really just a good thrashy modern metal thing. Great production by Logan Mader and well, metal runs well in this family.

Clutch
“Earth Rocker”
(Weathermaker)
http://www.pro-rock.com/
Always great when a new Clutch song hits my ears.  A bit more straightforward rockin’ on this track.  Not in that straight bluesy vein they seemed to be heading into.  The song title lives up to song… it really is an Earth Rocker in a way that only Clutch can do.

Black Explosion
Servitors Of The Outer Gods
Metalville
http://theblackexplosion.org/
Kind of a Clutch-like stoner metal band… Hard rock, catchy, big riffs, a bit of a 70’s classic rock vibe

Voivod
Target Earth
Century Media
http://www.voivod.com/
I’m not sure if this could be called a comeback record, but I guess it is… First album without any Piggy… and Blacky is back, so it’s kind of a throwback sound to the older stuff and it’s good.  I’m sure they thought they had to honor Piggy and also prove at the same time that they could do something great without him too.  It’s raw and old school sounding, yet still new and modern too.

White Line Tiger
Just Let It Happen
Akashic Records
https://www.facebook.com/whitelinetiger
Kind of a Post-metal, emo, proggy metal type thing.  I guess it’s a little bit like Protest the Hero, mixing up some brutal stuff, catchy guitar and eclectic mix of metal styles.  One of the better of this post-emo-core whatever you call it type metal.  I think where this kind of music gets bad is when it gets all “two-steppy”   and there isn’t too much of that in here.

Man The Machetes
Idiokrati
Indie Recordings
https://www.facebook.com/ManTheMachetes
A hardcore/punk influence hard rockin’ sort of thing (from Norway!)  Some melodic guitars, mostly screamed vocals, a hard hitting, and fast driving in your face.

Rotten Sound
Species at War
Relapse Records
https://www.facebook.com/RottenSoundOfficial
Fast, in your face grind with a big wall of sound.

Blockheads
This World Is Dead
Relapse Records
https://www.facebook.com/blockheadsgrind
Brutal, deathy grindcore from France.  fast, quick, short songs to the point and did I mention brutal?  yeah!  Brutal!

Viisikko
IIII
Svart
http://www.facebook.com/Viisikko
Kind of a raw, punked up, hardcore grind sort of thing, but yet metalled up too.  It seems to be all Finnish, which makes it even more cool, right?
