New Stuff This Week… 4/28/14

Whitechapel
Our Endless War
Metal Blade Records
Modern death metal with the technical chops and yeah, these days it means a bit of djent too. There’s no shortage of brutality on this!

Aborted
Necrotic Manifesto
Century Media
Been waiting for this one for a while.  This band has been around for a while and they are known for not fucking around.  This album is no different.  Blistering brutal death metal with nice catchy riffs.

PRONG
Ruining Lives
SPV
Been a fan of these guys for, well, like forever.  Great to see that Tommy is still kicking around and putting out Prong records.  This still has that catchy Prong sound, but maybe just a bit more of a straightforward metal sound and not as much of that signature super catchy stuff.  Yeah, it’s still catchy, but the best years are behind.

MISS MAY I
Rise of the Lion
Rise
Fairly catchy metalcore type stuff. A good brutal thrashy edge but with a pinch of that “Core” sound, some clean sung parts, but they really aren’t all whiney/emo, just decent catchy metal.

RODRIGO Y GABRIELA
9 Dead Alive
(ATO)
While this isn’t “proper” metal, it’s still pretty cool.  Just two people playing guitars and rocking that shit out.

Anti-Mortem
100% Pure American Rage (Single)
Nuclear Blast USA
Some new modern metal from some young guys in Oklahoma.

Helstar
This Wicked Nest
AFM Records
This band does metal right. Great thrashy catchy metal stuff, over the top vocals, and just overall great stuff.  James Rivera has been around in just about every band, but this is his own original band and it’s the real deal.

Klogr
Black Snow
Zeta Factory
Kind of a commercial hard rock/metal sounding thing from Italy. There’s a bit of a cool metal edge, but the main vibe is a bit of a mainstream metal.

Arkona
Yav
Napalm Records
Kind of a folky black metal from Russia, fairly long tracks, a bit proggy and it’s pretty decent stuff!

Saxon
St Georges Day Sacrifice, Live In Manchester
UDR Music
One of those new live albums from an old band… sounds great, decent setlist.  Probably a must have for the true fan!

Aurvandil
Thrones
Eisenwald
Long “post metal” like endurance test songs.  blah.

Devil You Know
The Beauty Of Destruction
Nuclear Blast
This band certainly has the pedigree… Howard Jones (Ex KsE), Francesco from All Shall Perish, Drummer from Fear Factory/Divine Heresy… A fairly solid metal effort with a little bit of an accessible sound.  Probably a bit too heavy to be “solid rock” though.

FAKE IDOLS
Fake Idols
LIfeforce
Modern commercial-like metalcore type stuff.  Probably going to have to pass on adding this one this week. It’s okay stuff, just not really for the Mosh Pit.

Curimus
Artificial Revolution
Freezing Penguin / Svart Records
Finnish thrashy death metal. Good stuff. great riffs, almost has a pinch of stoner metal going on too.  Brutal vocals, nothing ground breaking but good solid metal.

Vanhelga
Längtan
Art of Propaganda
Kinda sounds like someone took an old school black metal record and played it at the same time as a singer/songwriter album. I guess some tracks have a bit more black metal, some are bit more laid back.  I actually had to check and see if something was playing in a different web browser tab.  meh.

SadDolls
Grave Party
Inverse Records
Kind of a gothy industrial thing.  I am passing this along to WORT show SOmething Wonderful… it’s on before us, 8-11 Monday nights!

Martyr Defiled
No Hope No Morality
Siege of Amida
Brutal heavy modern death metal.

Insomnium
Shadows Of The Dying Sun
Century Media
Probably the closest thing to Amorphis that you’ll get.  Melodic proggy metal.  Great stuff that probably gets better with every listen too.

Dismemberment
Embrace The Dark
Horror Pain Gore Death
Heavy catchy blackened death metal with a modern sound and good production. There’s a great classic death metal feel with technicality mixed in there too.

Portrait
Crossroads
Metal Blade Records
A bit Mercyful Fate, a bit Iron Maiden, a little bit of Ghost and I hear a pinch of Fates Warning a bit too.  Pretty cool stuff which has a throwback feel, but not really.

So Hideous
Last Poem / First Light
Prosthetic Records
Here’s a copy/paste from the write up on this band/album:   The band, which features brothers Brandon (guitars) and Chris Cruz (vocals/bass) alongside longtime friends Danny Moncada (drums) and Etienne Vazquez (guitars), forms an emotionally diverse mélange of post-hardcore, symphonic black metal and experimental/shoegaze fused with classical influences.  So I copy/pasted that before listening to it with a feeling that it’d be spot on.  And yup, it sure is!  Couldn’t say it better myself.

Albinö Rhino
Albinö Rhino
Inverse
Big sludgey stoner metal sound with a little bit of a Mastodon feel.

New Stuff This Week… 4/21/14

Mastodon
High Road (Single)
Warner Brothers
Well, these guys did it again.  100% mastodon sound.  Stoner, proggy, catchy, heavy, melodic.  While this isn’t a barn burner, it’s got it all.

Mekong Delta
In A Mirror Darkly
SPV
A unique proggy thrash from this often overlooked band.

Holy Moses
Redefined Mayhem
SPV
Heavy thrash, catchy, almost brutal, lots of quick riffs and that German edge

The Graviators
Motherload
Napalm Records
Meaty riffed Stoner metal with cool melodies and a laid-back 70’s metal vibe.

Dead Earth Politics
The Queen Of Steel (EP)
Genuine Records
Catchy hard rock/metal, a bit of a commercial feel, but maybe right on the edge.  Thrashy, melodic, reminds of of Iron Maiden in parts, then some Pantera, or even Godsmack too.  It’s tough to have a sound that’s kind of unique yet still accessible, I think this throws a lot of genres together but they make it work.

ANUBIS GATE
Horizons
Nightmare Records
Decent proggy power metal, cool melodies, catchy songs, standard power metal-style vocals.

TERAMAZE
Esoteric Symbolism
Nightmare Records
Prog metal, with a little bit of a Redemption vibe, Great riffs, some epic prog moments with a little bit of a heavier element to keep it interesting.

Krokus
Long Stick Goes Boom: Live From Da House Of Rust
The End Records
It’s Krokus, it’s a live album, it sounds good.

Rubicon Cross
Rubicon Cross
Raider Rock/INgroves
Reminds me of a Motley Crue/Poison or maybe… Firehouse?  Yeah, this is new project from CJ Snare (of Firehouse fame)  It’s a good hard rock thing.  Catchy melodic hard rock songs.

EVENOIRE
Herons
Scarlet Records
Heavier standard metal music with female vocals. We dip into the operattic stuff a bit and get into some symphonic stuff too..

TEMPERANCE
Temperance
Scarlet Records
A flavor of proggy power metal fe-metal.  Clean sung female vocals, but not quite all opera-ey. An occasional Epica-like sound with some death growls.  Overall, it’s an epic female fronted proggy metal thing.

ASTRA
Broken Balance
Scarlet Records
Melodic hard rock type stuff with a proggy element.  Clean singy vocals a little bit of a Dream Theater vibe.

Memories Of A Dead Man
Ashes Of Joy
Send The Wood Music/Season Of Mist
Gothy doomy post metal with a little bit of a heavier metal vibe (so yeah, it’s not a complete endurance test, there are some decent metal growly stuff things going on)

My Reflection
This World Belongs To Us
Inverse Records
Commercial poppy female fronted “metal”

Skelethal
Deathmanicvs Revelation MLP
Iron Bonehead
Old school sounding death metal with very very basic “bad” production.  I don’t get it.

Woman Is The Earth
This Place That Contains My Spirit
Eisenwald
Black metal meets post metal.  Pretty heavy, cold vibe, four long tracks.

Harakiri For The Sky
Aokigahara
Art of Propaganda
A Blackened doom thing  melidic in parts, black metal brutal in others

Aurvandil
Thrones
Eisenwald
Old school black metal, icky production, indescernable   vocals, yet still good (if production was better!)

Patria
Individualism
Indie Recordings
Modern black metal (good production)   No messing around  good blast beats, cold, evil riffs and harsh vocals.

Sebastian Bach
Bach From Hell
Radio Edits
Frontiers Records
One of the best rock vocalists is “Bach” heh.  This is some decent hard rock stuff.  Mostly power ballad or AOR type stuff.  Catchy anthemic hard rock.  Curious if the rest of the album is more “metal”

At Radogost’s Gates
Reflection Of A Lunar Eclipse In The Stained Mirror Of Time
Horror Pain Gore Death
This is some alright brutal thrashy metal, however, it sounds like it was recorded on cassette tape.  production and drum sound is distracting to the rest of what sounds like decent metal.

Polar
Shadowed By Vultures
Prosthetic Records
15 April 2014

THE DRIP
A Presentation of Gruesome Poetics (NA Promo)
Relapse Records
A Big wall of Grindy thrash deathy metal, pissed off, in your face and alll metal.

ANDROMEDA
Shock
Southern Brigade Records
Standard hard rock/metal with a bit of a power metal feel.  This is not to be confused with the “other” Andromeda.  This one sings everything in Italian.

New Stuff This Week… 4/14/14

THE BIRDS OF SATAN
The Birds of Satan
Shanabelle
Some heavy hard rock type stuff from Taylor Hawkins (from Foo Fighters) Some songs get a little heavier, but there’s just a punky 70’s hard rock vibe with a pinch of Foo Fighters sound (of course)

CROWBAR
“Walk With Knowledge Wisely”
eOne
Sludgey southern metal as they do best.  Just a single so far, but if you liked these guys before, you’ll like this song.

Emmure
Eternal Enemies
Victory Records
Brutal deathcore with some big meaty riffs and the occasional screamy melodic part.

Gamma Ray
Empire Of The Undead
Eagle Rock Entertainment
Classic power metal with a pinch of thrash.  First album in 4 years, good to have them back and doing what they do best.

Brainstorm
Firesoul
AFM Records
Power metal with a bit of a boost of darker, heavier thrashy stuff. Bands like Gamma Ray above are great, heavy metal stuff with lots of melody and that, but the Brainstorm just adds some bigger balls and heaviness to it.

Diabulus In Musica
Argia
Napalm Records
Symphonic, epic metal from Spain, there’s some great heavy melodic death stuff in here, but then it goes to the fe-metal operattic vocals. Similar to Epica, except that Epica kinda mixes in some deathy growls and stuff, this is basically Epica without the more brutal stuff. (except for a track or two I guess)

Triptykon
Melana Chasmata
Century Media Records
Second full album from Tom Fischer’s “new” band.  The first track is a thrashy grindy burner… some other tracks follow that mold, most of the album is a bit more doom/sludgy.  It’s too bad it couldn’t be more like the first track. The overall feel is a post-metal doomy something.

Below
Across the Dark River
Metal Blade Records
A big meaty 70’s evil doomy hard rock thing going on. Vocals are more of a power metal, haunty Warrell Dane sound.  It’s got a Sabbathy/Candlemass thing going on too.

Dark Days Ahead
North Star Blues
Inverse
kind of a thrashy thing with hints of a Lamb of God, or Pantera, but with a power ballad here and there.  This feels a little bit like that kind of Five Finger Death Punch metal which wants to be all heavy and the next big thing, but just doesn’t have that extra “thing”  still decent though!

Possession (Belgium)
Anneliese 7″ EP
Iron Bonehead/Invictus
Raw black metal, demo quality.  A bit more of the black n roll type of black metal.  A bit of a groove, abrasive vocals and cold guitars with punchy drums.

HIGH SPIRITS
High Spirits 7″
Hells Headbangers
2 songs, 70’s hard rock vibe.

Pact
The Infernal Hierarchies, Penetrating the Threshold of Night
Moribund
Big wall of black metal goodness. A Heavy, brutal wall of sound.  Mostly a thrashier heavy black metal.  Cold constant riffs just haunt you.

Wormreich
Wormcult Revelations
Moribund
Great epic black metal.  Brutal, old school sound, yet with modern production.

Creinium
Project Utopia
Inverse
A little black metal, melodic death, a bit proggy and some doom… a great mix of all these sub genres which equals 100% metal.
