New Stuff This Week… 4/28/14
Whitechapel
Our Endless War
Metal Blade Records
Modern death metal with the technical chops and yeah, these days it means a bit of djent too. There’s no shortage of brutality on this!
Aborted
Necrotic Manifesto
Century Media
Been waiting for this one for a while. This band has been around for a while and they are known for not fucking around. This album is no different. Blistering brutal death metal with nice catchy riffs.
PRONG
Ruining Lives
SPV
Been a fan of these guys for, well, like forever. Great to see that Tommy is still kicking around and putting out Prong records. This still has that catchy Prong sound, but maybe just a bit more of a straightforward metal sound and not as much of that signature super catchy stuff. Yeah, it’s still catchy, but the best years are behind.
MISS MAY I
Rise of the Lion
Rise
Fairly catchy metalcore type stuff. A good brutal thrashy edge but with a pinch of that “Core” sound, some clean sung parts, but they really aren’t all whiney/emo, just decent catchy metal.
RODRIGO Y GABRIELA
9 Dead Alive
(ATO)
While this isn’t “proper” metal, it’s still pretty cool. Just two people playing guitars and rocking that shit out.
Anti-Mortem
100% Pure American Rage (Single)
Nuclear Blast USA
Some new modern metal from some young guys in Oklahoma.
Helstar
This Wicked Nest
AFM Records
This band does metal right. Great thrashy catchy metal stuff, over the top vocals, and just overall great stuff. James Rivera has been around in just about every band, but this is his own original band and it’s the real deal.
Klogr
Black Snow
Zeta Factory
Kind of a commercial hard rock/metal sounding thing from Italy. There’s a bit of a cool metal edge, but the main vibe is a bit of a mainstream metal.
Arkona
Yav
Napalm Records
Kind of a folky black metal from Russia, fairly long tracks, a bit proggy and it’s pretty decent stuff!
Saxon
St Georges Day Sacrifice, Live In Manchester
UDR Music
One of those new live albums from an old band… sounds great, decent setlist. Probably a must have for the true fan!
Aurvandil
Thrones
Eisenwald
Long “post metal” like endurance test songs. blah.
Devil You Know
The Beauty Of Destruction
Nuclear Blast
This band certainly has the pedigree… Howard Jones (Ex KsE), Francesco from All Shall Perish, Drummer from Fear Factory/Divine Heresy… A fairly solid metal effort with a little bit of an accessible sound. Probably a bit too heavy to be “solid rock” though.
FAKE IDOLS
Fake Idols
LIfeforce
Modern commercial-like metalcore type stuff. Probably going to have to pass on adding this one this week. It’s okay stuff, just not really for the Mosh Pit.
Curimus
Artificial Revolution
Freezing Penguin / Svart Records
Finnish thrashy death metal. Good stuff. great riffs, almost has a pinch of stoner metal going on too. Brutal vocals, nothing ground breaking but good solid metal.
Vanhelga
Längtan
Art of Propaganda
Kinda sounds like someone took an old school black metal record and played it at the same time as a singer/songwriter album. I guess some tracks have a bit more black metal, some are bit more laid back. I actually had to check and see if something was playing in a different web browser tab. meh.
SadDolls
Grave Party
Inverse Records
Kind of a gothy industrial thing. I am passing this along to WORT show SOmething Wonderful… it’s on before us, 8-11 Monday nights!
Martyr Defiled
No Hope No Morality
Siege of Amida
Brutal heavy modern death metal.
Insomnium
Shadows Of The Dying Sun
Century Media
Probably the closest thing to Amorphis that you’ll get. Melodic proggy metal. Great stuff that probably gets better with every listen too.
Dismemberment
Embrace The Dark
Horror Pain Gore Death
Heavy catchy blackened death metal with a modern sound and good production. There’s a great classic death metal feel with technicality mixed in there too.
Portrait
Crossroads
Metal Blade Records
A bit Mercyful Fate, a bit Iron Maiden, a little bit of Ghost and I hear a pinch of Fates Warning a bit too. Pretty cool stuff which has a throwback feel, but not really.
So Hideous
Last Poem / First Light
Prosthetic Records
Here’s a copy/paste from the write up on this band/album: The band, which features brothers Brandon (guitars) and Chris Cruz (vocals/bass) alongside longtime friends Danny Moncada (drums) and Etienne Vazquez (guitars), forms an emotionally diverse mélange of post-hardcore, symphonic black metal and experimental/shoegaze fused with classical influences. So I copy/pasted that before listening to it with a feeling that it’d be spot on. And yup, it sure is! Couldn’t say it better myself.
Albinö Rhino
Albinö Rhino
Inverse
Big sludgey stoner metal sound with a little bit of a Mastodon feel.
