A bit of a commerical hard rock/metal sound, but a cool catchy groove and a little bit of a gritty crunch

Einherjer
North Star
Napalm Records
Melodic death sounding a bit like an Amorphis meets Opeth with a tiny bit of a black metal vibe and classic metal grooves.

Epica
Omega
Nuclear Blast USA
Blending epic (hence their name) symphonic melodic death with operattic vox along with death growls… this band sets the standard for this “epic” metal. I usually think the female operattic metal stuff is ok, but with Epica, there’s just something more, the heavier darker full metal to back it up too.

Korpse
Insufferable Violence
Unique Leader Records
Full on, fuckin brutal death metal, heavy as shit, intense drumming and death growls to melt off your face. cool stuff.

Moonspell
Hermitage
Napalm Records
Wow, new Epica and Moonspell in the same week… nice. The 3 songs i have so far, seem to be a bit more low-key melodic stuff, which builds and builds into some of the heavier gothy melodic death… one of the tracks kind of just stays low-key, “The Greater Good” builds and builds into some great metal goodness.

Iotunn
Access All Worlds

Release date: Friday, February 26th 2021
I’m not sure I get the use of a V as a vowel… but, whatever, this is basically some hardcore with a unique scream/shouted vox, maybe similar to Agnostic Front, but then heading a bit into modern metalcore too.

Anneke Van Giersbergen
The Darkest Skies Are The Brightest
InsideOut
Release date: Friday, February 26, 2021
As suspected, this is not metal, folky acoustic stuff which she’s pretty good at. And yes, she opened for Delain/Amorphis on a tour a little while back and it was pretty damn, good, she’s very talented, has metal in her blood, but this release is not metal.

Infernalizer (ft. Claudio Ravinale of Disarmonia Mundi)

They call this deathcore… i can hear a lot of that, but I’d also say it’s a bit more modern thrashy stuff, and throwing in a little bit of that “core” melody… like a deathcore’d up lamb of god… great stuff.

Black Totem
II: Shapeshifting
Svart Records
26 February 2021
A kind of punk/crust metal thing… a bit raw and a little sense of groove, but leaning a bit too much into punk for me.

Normally when something has “post-xxx” as a genre, it’s a meh from me… in this case, this is “progressive and post-rock” which I hear a bit of the “post” sound… which I guess to me means kind of meandering music… to me it’s more of a straight up prog rock with some leanings of a Tool-like sound. not too shabby.
