New Stuff This Week… 9/7/14

IRON REAGAN
The Tyranny of Will
Relapse Records
Raw punky thrashy Hardcore. Almost a bit like old Suicidal Tendencies or a little DRI

MYRKUR
Myrkur (NA Promo)
Relapse Records
This is a one-woman black metal band.  A bit of a raw old school black metal sound. Some atmosphereic stuff with some melodic and operatic female vox. Some growly black metal style vocals too.  Music is mostly melodic yet “cold” sounding in the guitar department.

IN FLAMES
Siren Charms
Epic
As modern In Flames goes, this is right up there.  However a lot of the album is ANders’ clean vocals and it’s a bit more melodic… so if you’re looking for old school In Flames, you might as well pull out those old cassettes and listen to them.  That In Flames is long gone.  This In Flames still puts out quality stuff and is progressing.  While this isn’t quite as heavy as I’d like, I do like this band and what they do.  It’s familiar as you have the same singer and a lot of the same elements as in the past, but it’s new and fresh too.

ORANGE GOBLIN
“Sabbath Hex” (single)
Candlelight
Catchy heavy stoner metal.  This band is one of the best of the “stoner metal” genre, they keep it heavy, interesting, don’t mess around a lot and yeah, I want to hear more!

UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS
“Runaway Girls” (digital 7-inch)
Rise Above
Kind of a  stoner metal, catchy riffs, vocals make it into more of a 70’s throwback thing, maybe with a little bit of a Led Zep vibe too.

OBITUARY
“Visions In My Head” (single)
Relapse
Well well well… four years in the making, and we have some new Obituary.  And yeah, this is the real deal.  Just one song dammit, but it’s great classic Obituary.  Great grooves, heavy heavy heavy.  The production is a little bit

Diesel America
Leave Your Mark
DAM Entertainment
Basic hard rock, and not really much “metal” about it.  And since the Mosh Pit is a metal show, I’m not sure if this would fit too well.  It’s pretty decent catchy hard rock type stuff.

Monuments
The Amanuensis
Century Media
Melodic metal, kind of a melodic death, but yet a bit metalcore too, and a pinch of prog. Ppetty catchy, yet a lil bit commercial too.

Thadeus Gonzalez
Utopian Society
Independent
Decent singer/songwriter catchy hard rock.  But, probably not great for the Mosh Pit. I hear a bit of REM and maybe a little bit of Winery Dogs type stuff, but nothing metal about it.

STRIKER
City Of Gold
Napalm Records
Catchy thrashy metal with some over the top vocals which reminds me a bit of old school Joey Belladonna Anthrax. It’s great to hear that bands are still around that make an old school “true” metal thing with screamy/sung vocals, the big over the top metal scrreaaaam once in a while, but yet still a regular gritty thrashy voice thing going on too.  Great classic guitar work and all around a cool fun metal album.

Black Twilight Circle – various artists
TLILTIC TLAPOYAUAK
The Ajna Offensive
2 September 2014

The Sabbathian
Ritual Rites
Svart Records
A doomy stoner metal with a little bit of a 70’s metal throwback.  Female vocals of many different neat and creepy styles.

WARHOUND
Next Level
Beatdown Hardwear Records
Kind of a pissed off extreme hardcore/thrash

Ascended Dead
Arcane Malevolence 7″ EP
Blood Harvest
Black metal, death metal, just fast, aggressive moosh of metal. Vocals are shout/growled and very abrasive.

Funereus (Mexico)
Return of the Old Goat CD
Forever Plagued
Some classic black metal, brutal, heavy and evil.  Great stuff.

Cries Of The Captive
Imperialist
Imminence Records
Good ol meat and potatoes death metal but with a little bit of a brutal core thing going on too.

BLEEDING UTOPIA
Darkest Potency
Bleeding Music Records
Great Swedish melodic death metal.  catchy, heavy, brutal and Kevin Talley as the hired gun for drums!

Mirrelia
The Actor
Unsigned
Proggy, experimental melodic “Post hardcore”  i guess I’d have to say this is most like Protest the Hero.  it’s ok stuff.

New Stuff This Week… 9/1/14

YOB
Clearing The Path To Ascend
(Neurot)
It’s safe to say most stuff on the Neurot label is something I won’t like, and yup, it is still true.  Long drony songs, experimental post-metal doom stuff.

KRIEG
Transient
Candlelight
Old school sounding black metal, not the best production, but it’s good enough to hear there’s a good catchy groove and some proper amount of evil.

PRONG
“Remove, Separate Self”
(SPV)
A single from their latest album with a remix done by Matt Heavy of Trivum fame.

CRIMSON SHADOWS
Kings Among Men
Napalm Records
Starts off sounding like it could be some Dragonforce clone, but the vocals are a bit more aggressive and we’re more in the melodic death with a pinch of folk metal thrown in. So yeah, a melodic death/power metal thing going on and it’s pretty cool.

Rival Sons
Great Western Valkyrie
Earache Records
Classic bluesy sounding hard rock.  Catchy songs with a groove and a major throwback vibe, yet still a bit of a modern, relevant sound.

Hammerfall
(r)Evolution
Nuclear Blast
These guys have been around for quite some time and carrying the flag for proper classic power metal. First album in three years and it’s got the riffs, meedly guitars and the big powerful vocals, while not getting into anything more heavy or brutal, this is still pretty cool stuff.

The Haunted
Exit Wounds
Century Media
Well, these guys are back with a vengeance.  Probably one of the best albums of the year in my opinion (I’m a fan of melodic death to begin with)  It’s catchy, melodic, brutal and crisp and really throwing back to the old school of the Haunted. You compare this to their last album from 2011… it’s like “is this the same band?”  yeah.  The new one sounds like it could have been released right after One Kill Wonder. (of course Marco Aro is back as their vocalist)  Great stuff.

VORZUG
I AM IN HELL (Single)
APOLLYON ENTERTAINMENT
Blackened thrashy, a bit evil sounding and a wall of sound… I’d like to hear more before judging too much, but it’s pretty good so far.

LUCIFER’S FALL
Lucifer’s Fall
Rotedoom Records
Big doomy 70’s classic metal type thing, big meaty riffs, a little bit of a dark vibe, but catchy too.

DHWESHA
Sthoopa
Dunkelheit Produktionen
Death Metal from India!  A bit thrashy, and some basic death metal with a bit of guitar melody, growly shouted vocals, a little bit muddy production, but still good enough to appreciate some decent death metal here.

WOLF
Devil Seed
Century Media
A power metal band with an edge, this is their Century Media debut and first album in 3 years.  catchy concise classic metal sounding stuff.

Dark Fortress
Venereal Dawn
Century Media
Some melodic black metal, brutal stuff, melodic stuff, proggy stuff too.  I hear some (old) Opeth-like stuff in here too, with some dynamics of more mellow prog stuff mixed with brutality.

Black Tongue
Born Hanged / Falsifer [Redux]
Century Media
Deathcore, or brutal-core as I like to call it.  This is heavy, chugga chugga, with some slugdey down tempo, heavy as fuck guitar work and sick brutal vocals.  Also it includes some of their earlier stuff.

Set and Setting
A Vivid Memory
Prosthetic Records
Doomy melodic proggy post-metal, fairly ambient type stuff, all instrumental… some parts get going into some out there black metal tendencies, but for the most part, it sounds like some doomy jam session.

Where Giants Once Stood
Live Above EP (2014)
Self-Release
heavy metalcore, and where bands these days tend to get all emo and singy with autotune in a chorus, these guys keep it brutal and just scream higher pitched… haha.  some melodic music stuff, but its still all good.

Nethermost
Noetic
Horror Pain Gore Death
Doomy melodic death.  meaty melodic riffs, with a little bit of a meedly black metal rhythm guitar thing going on .  Cookie monster vocals keep it grounded here in death metal land.

MISEO
Lunatic Confessions
Blacksmith Records
Thrashy death metal, basic meat and potatoes type stuff.  Great production, brutal, catchy.

ICHOR
Depths
Bastardized Recordings
Brutal heavy, brutal-core I guess.  Just pissed off, in your face, fast drumming great guitar work, sick vocals, lots of layers of cool stuff.  I know I use the word brutal too much, but that’s really what describes this.

CHRIS VIOLENCE
American Ripper
Self Released (Online Metal Promo PR)
Musically, it’s basic classic thrashy sounding stuff.  Vocals are screamy classic thrash and spoken word which is actually more fun stuff.

DEAD SEASON
Dusting the Rust
Self-Relased
Thrashy stuff with um, well, some stuff is all brutal, and melodic, maybe a bit like Testament… one of the tracks is all brutal with a horn section, it’s pretty cool!

Black Dawn
Until We Meet
Blue Pie Rec.
Standard metal stuff, a little bit like some simple Pantera type stuff.

Darkness Divided
Written in Blood
Victory
Catchy, heavy, yes brutal metalcore.  Wall of sound, pissed off vocals, cool stuff.

New Stuff This Week…8/25/14

Revocation
Deathless – Radio Single
Metal Blade
We’ve been fans of these guys since the very first listen.  Good technical brutal metal.  This first single from their Metal Blade debut starts off that way, builds up to be a bit more of a melodic death sound, still with brutal vox and technicality. can’t wait to hear more!

Brute Forcz
Out For Blood
Pure Steel Records
Standard metal, your basic riffs, shouted vocals with a bit of that “local” band vibe.

A Midnight Tragedy
Lost Under Infinite Sorrow
AMTMusic Publishing
Clean vocals, standard metal, a bit on the 90’s AOR metal sound, with a little bit of prog/power metal stuff going on.

The Order Of Israfel
Wisdom
Napalm Records
Melodic doomy metal, with a little bit of that slower Godsmack song vibe in parts (you know, like the song “Vooodooooo”)  but it does have some big meaty riffs, some cool melody and transcends doom into epic stoner 70’s metal jams.

Circle II Circle
Live At Wacken
Eagle Rock Entertainment
Some Savatage songs, some C2C songs, pretty decent stuff.

Empress AD
Empress AD
The End/Roadrunner Records
A grungy, yet melodic and dynamic proggy type thing.  Kind of like a Mastodon meets Pink Floyd.

ENGLISH DOGS
The Thing With Two Heads
Candlelight
Old school raw punked up thrash  Mostly thrash, but with that bit of a punk vibe

COLOMBIAN NECKTIE
Twilight Upon Us
(Self-released)
A bit thrashy, a bit grindy, some groove and hardcore too.

FORCE OF DARKNESS
Absolute Verb of Chaos and Darkness (CD)
Hells Headbangers
raw, scary black/death metal. Pretty heavy, sick and brutal with some raw production, but not quite like, you know, playing through an 1940’s telephone, you can actually hear what’s going on.  There’s just an evil feeling going on here too.

Get Stoked
Washington Street
Imminence Records
Commercial pop hard rock… not gonna be playing this, actually, nevermind.

SWINE OVERLORD
Parables of Umbral Transcendence
Gore House Productions
Full on brutal death metal.  Wall of brutal sound crushing you.

Here’s a bunch of stuff that came into the inbox lately, but was released earlier this year

PLANET OF ZEUS
Vigilante
Ihaveadrum Records
A bit like Clutch, but maybe with a little bit more energy.  So yeah, amped up stoner metal with a very strong Clutch vibe.

EXHUMATION
Bread Buttered on both Sides
Self-Released
28 April 2014
This is some cool thrashy extreme metal.  Musically it’s more thrash, vocally it’s more screamy.

ORDOXE
Beyond Mankind
Hymnes d’Antan
14 March 2014
Blackened death metal.  A cool groove, yet 100% brutal… yet, there’s also some doomy melodic parts too.  (and no, it doesn’t take away from the brutality!)

DESTRUKTOR / THRONEUM
A Prophecy of Nihilism (Split 7″)
Hells Headbangers
Both a bit raw, but both bands are just full on brutal death metal.  I’d have to go with the Destruktor on this one, production is a bit better, and well, now listening to it more, I can skip the Throneum… too raw and the vocals just are a shouty scream. (bad production)

MALHKEBRE
Revelation
I, Voidhanger Records
6 July 2014
Basic black metal.  Music is more like a black/death metal, vocals are just a creepy shouted/screamed and are somewhat haunting… like a ghost yelling at you for one of those haunted house things.

SVENGALI
Unscathed
Self-Released
15 April 2014
A metal band from Dubai of all places.  I’d say it’s a little bit of proggy melodic death.

GUILTY AS CHARGED
Leap of Faith
Self-Released
13 June 2014
Thrashy metal with a Bay Area feel from the 90’s.  A little Slayer, Death Angel, melodic thrash stuff.

CONJURO NUCLEAR
Conjuro Nuclear
Self-Released
Atmospheric black-ish metal.  A big keyboard base for part of this thing, otherwise it’s just kind of that wall of cold drony black metal guitars with vocals that are growly, but hardly discernable from the music.

ENCELADUS
Journey to Enlightenment
Self Released (online Metal Promo)
Power metal from Texas!  A bit over the top with the guitars, and heavier than the average “power metal” band.. some great stuff going on musically, lots of meedly guitars, quick drums to match and yeah, great screamy vocals.

Crimson Reign
The Calling (2014)
Self Released (Online MEtal PRomo PR)
Standard “metal” going on here. A little bit of a mercyful fate vibe vocally, maybe not quite over the top like the King, but just a tonal quality that reminds me of it.  Music can go from cool heavier metal and other tracks are power ballady.

Soulnerve
The Dying Light
Self Released (email-bandcamp)
Melodic thrashy death from the Netherlands.  Usually when we get an email from a band, it’s like, oh, this isn’t too bad, in this case, this is kinda like whoa, this is pretty damn good!  A cool melodic death with thrashy stuff going on too.  While it’s like, nothing we haven’t heard before, there’s just something about this and what they all mix together that does make it sound a bit unique too.
