New Stuff This Week… 6/30/14

EVERY TIME I DIE
From Parts Unknown
Epitaph
Metalcore, but just man, in your face screamy wall punked up metal. A bit of techy mathcore stuff going on too… They’re back and showing everyone they’re not fucking around again.

Chelsea Grin
Ashes To Ashes
Razor And Tie
Brutal metalcore…(deathcore) just a wall of brutal chugging math-djent-ish metal… but catchy and

Novembers Doom
Bled White
The End Records
Melodic, proggy death metal along the lines of Opeth, but leaning more on the Death Metal.  In the past they seemed to lean more on the Doom… it seems like they have a good balance of death and doom along with melodic death type stuff too.

Sonic Syndicate
Sonic Syndicate
Nuclear Blast USA
Some heavier commercial sounding metal.  A bit like a Five Finger Death Punch, but with a fuller sound seemingly filled in with electronic keyboard type stuff… but it stays heavy and cool.  Track 5 features Speed from Soilwork!

AMBERIAN DAWN
Magic Forest
Napalm Records
Proggy/power metal with female vocals… kind of seems like a typical euro fe-metal band.  Clean sung female vox, almost have an Abba quality to them.  Music is keyboard heavy, so I guess that throws them a bit more into the Symphonic metal category.

Temple Desecration
Communion Perished MLP
Iron Bonehead
One track… long song, kind of doomy black metal.

Eternal Oblivion
Human Fields
Horror Pain Gore Death
Blackened thrash… great catchy thrash.  A big wall of sound

Save the Clock Tower
Wasteland
Bullet Tooth
Melodic metalcore type stuff, screamy vocals.

SPELLCASTER
Spellcaster
LONE FIR RECORDS (BAND RUN)
A bit of a throwback of some basic sounding Priest type stuff, or maybe a basic “metal” band.  Clean vocals, just your standard metal formula… nothing awesome, nothing bad.  \m/

1000Mods
Vultures
The Lab Recs
A bit of a stoner metal thing with a little grungy feeling.

Marmozets
“Marmozets EP”
Roadrunner Records / Roadrunner Promotion
At first, I thought it was another emo sounding metalcore thing… but then the more you get into it, it’s british female vocals that then go more the direction of Otep or something.  Just a three song EP, but female fronted modern metal with a pissed off punk edge and melodic stuff too.

GAME OVER
Burst Into The Quiet
Scarlet Records
Classic sounding thrash, great production, catch stuff.

Everley
The Tyger And The Lamb
10 June 2014
Post metal, indie sounding stuff.

DWELL
Far Dark Helm
Self-Released
Doomy, cold, black metal type stuff.

New Stuff This Week… 6/23/14

Deathstars
The Perfect Cult
Nuclear Blast
Kind of an industrial feel with a bit of a Rammstein-Lite feel.  It’s catchy, and a bit commercial, but something that you probably won’t hear anywhere else.

DEAD BY WEDNESDAY
Death Of The Rockstar
Ear One
Metalcore, hardcore, brutal-ish thrash.  Just a pissed off thing going on the title track… the rest has a bit of melody and a laid back feel musically with a bit of a groove. Vocals go from clean to growl/screamed, but never getting all emo…. just good clean stuff… kind of like a Shadows Fall thing. oh, how bout that, they’re touring together and hit Madison on June 30th!

MASTODON
Once More ‘Round The Sun
Reprise
WHat’s this? New Mastodon?  Wonder what it sounds like.  hmmmm… Mastodon!  Well, it’s got great production, catchy proggy stoner metal like they always do.  Maybe a bit more of a melodic, less “heavy” feel (mainly in the vocals)  They’ve done it again… just when I thought I was getting bored with these guys, this one kind grabbed me back!

DragonForce
The Game – Single
Metal Blade Records
Wow, this starts off and feels like some melodic death right away musically and keeps that going.  Vocally, it’s still all clean, oh wait… growls!?  Whoaaaa!  Just when you think you heard all of DragonForce… whoa, back and even heavier with a bit of a melodic death twist.  Now I can’t wait to hear more!

SuddenFlames
Under the Sign of the Alliance (MMR018)
Maple Metal Records
A heavier power metal, in the vein of Primal Fear… another good one from Maple Metal!

Channel Zero
Kill All Kings
Metal Blade Records
Not quite sure how to describe this, aside that it’s “metal”  It’s a little thrashy, a bit power metal, some groove, a bit commercial-ish.  Apparently they are one of the biggest metal bands in Belgium… Roy Mayorga (soulfly, etc) is the session drummer for these guys.  Good stuff actually.

MONOLITH
Dystopia
Finalgate Records
Thought I was listening to some old Sabbath for a minute.  Doomy, catchy 70’s sounding metal with an Ozzy-like vocalist.

Psyyke
1983 – 1985
Svart Records
Um… like a punk Devo.  Meh.

RED ELEVEN
Tomorrow’s Path – digital single
Lifeforce
Musically a modern djenty funky jazzy thing…. vocals, a bit like some Faith No More, but really not falling into metal… and track two?  Eh.. while ok hard rock type stuff, really not for the Mosh Pit.

Common Eider, King Eider
Taaleg Uksur
Pesanta Urfolk
I’m not sure if I have ever liked anything from this label… another long drony noise thing. I don’t get it.

Hrizg
Individualism
Moribund
Some basic raw black metal.  Heavy classic sound, and yet melodic in parts too. Not perfect production, but not totally crappy either, it has that “just right” sound

Mortualia
Blood of the Hermit
Moribund
Some long doomy black metal type stuff.

Zgard
Contemplation
Svarga Music
23 June 2014
Some extreme black metal stuff, with a bit of melodic stuff… maybe like Opeth, but a bit more on the extreme side.

NUNSLAUGHTER
Angelic Dread
Hells Headbangers
Blackened thrashy death metal, songs are short, to the point and no fucking around.  Great stuff!

CEMETERY LUST
Orgies of Abomination
Hells Headbangers
A raw, extreme blackened thrash.  Again, no fucking around on this one either… taking thrash up a notch… way past 11!

Decieverion
Decieverion
Horror Pain Gore Death
A basic modern black metal band.  A bit doomy, melodic, screamy vocals, skipping the whole blast beat, cold sounding guitars… pretty decent

KARST
Lime Veins Bleed Rust
Self-Released
A very raw, garage band sounding punked up black metal with some melodic stuff here and there.

Necuratul
Sanguine Lupus Graves
Forever Plagued
More black metal!  This is more like a true classic sounding old school black metal band.  A bit of a low-production sound, cold guitars, blast beats, some melody…

Burdens of Misanthropy
Missionary
Self Released (bandcamp)
Got an email from these guys with a single… and wanted more…  picked ’em up from their bandcamp page… Great brutal death metal!

New Stuff This Week…6/16/14

Allegaeon
Elements of the Infinite
Metal Blade Records
When these guys first hit the scene, it was like a breath of fresh air.  Technical brutality with catchy almost prog/power metal guitar work.  The second album was decent, but you know, that sophomore thing.  This new album to me is more like the first.  Just shaking my head at how these guys can pull off what they do, while trying to headbang, air guitar, air drum and growling my face off at the same time.  If you like any sort of metal that leans a bit heavier, you need to check these guys out!

HELLYEAH
Blood for Blood
Eleven Seven
You know, I thought Hellyeah was kind of played out… and to a point I do a little bit.  But this album makes me come around a bit more.  It seems a bit cleaner, more concise, but still the same stuff that makes Hellyeah “Hellyeah”  yeah a pinch of all of the bands that the original members are all from, but still unique.  I would say that it still falls under that “bro-metal” category like FFDP and the like.  Still decent.

KOBRA AND THE LOTUS
High Priestess
Titan
Female fronted standard metal.  A bit thrashy, a bit like Huntress… catchy riffs, vocals are sung pretty normal, but then just get those high notes that make you happy to be a metalhead.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY
IX
Candlelight
One of the original “new” stoner metal bands from back in the 80’s or whatever.  And they still have that trademark catchy doomy sound. Still great stuff after all these years (and line-up changes)

SEPTICFLESH
Titan
Prosthetic
Brutal, epic blackened death metal.  Probably about where Dimmu Borgir should be going now?  I dunno, thrashy, heavy, but with some feeling, melody and a hint of epic (pinch of symphony/melodic stuff).

Kingdoom
Stand Up Chameleon
MGI
A little bit like Monster Magnet meets Rob Zombie.  Catchy hard rock with some electronic stuff.

Rippikoulu
Ulvaja
Svart Records
A raw old school black metal sound but a bit more prog/spacey sounding with doomy death metal tendencies.

Profetus
As All Seasons Die
Svart Records
Dark plodding doomy stuff.

RETURN FROM THE GRAVE
Gates of Nowhere
Argonauta Records
A nice big meaty stoner metal sound.  A little bit like Trouble, and Black Sabbath.  Definitely a 70’s metal throwback with some groove.

Vassafor / Sinistrous Diabolus
Split LP
Iron Bonehead
Some really long tracks… crappy echo in a cave-like production, doomy black metal type stuff.  meh.

Feed The Rhino
The Sorrow And The Sound
Siege of Amida
Noisy hardcore with a pinch of punk. Catchy parts, some “core” parts… but overall, ok.

Definitely A First
Colorblind
Imminence Records
Metalcore.  Decent catchy riffs, heavy stuff, then the all happy singy voice chorus, but it mixes with the harsh vocals decent.   This still falls in the category of “i’m too old for this”

ARMED WITH VALOR
PRIMA FACIE
New Ocean Media
Female fronted metal(core).  A heavy edge, clean and growled vocals.  While not all metalcore, it’s a mix of like “standard” metal.  Traditionally sung vocals, some in growly death metal “Arch Enemy” style, then some more in a fe-metal style or Lacuna Coil type stuff.  Pretty decent and diverse.

SCAMP
The Deadcalm
Scarlet Records
Sort of a melodic death thing.  Big low end, catchy riffs, shouty growl vocals.
