New Stuff This Week… 6/9/14

ARCH ENEMY
War Eternal
Century Media
Honestly, I’m a huge fan of this band, so this review is a little biased… but with a new singer in the fold, what’s it gonna be?  Well, it’s awesome, a rebirth… all the same stuff you love about Arch Enemy, monster riffs, drumming, melodies and all that stuff.. and now new brutal female vocals.  You also have some symphoninc stuff showing up and it actually really works well to fill out the sound even better… adding a great new dynamic. Great stuff.

Vader
Tibi Et Igni
Nuclear Blast
Quite the one-two punch of new releases this week. New Arch Enemy, and now new Vader… wowza.  10th Album, first in 3 years and first with the new Drummer.  It’s the same ol great brutal, technical death metal that they’ve always been good at.  No fucking around. again, great stuff!

BEARTOOTH
Disgusting
Red Bull
This band is on Warped tour all year, that should be an indication of what direction this band goes… metal-coreish.  Seems like some pretty neat “extreme” stoner metal… you know, kinda stoner-ish, but with more extreme vocals, but then it takes a turn to the singy “emo-ish” vocals.  Sigh.  Overall it seems pretty decent, but you put that vocal style in there, and then my age kicks in.. “i’m too old for this stuff”  ugh.

THE AMITY AFFLICTION
Let the Ocean Take Me
Roadrunner
This is almost the same as above, it’s pretty cool heavy melodic metalcore and brutal type stuff, then it just gets all clean happy singing with some two-step beats…. again with the “i’m too old for this”

Bloody Hammers
Under Satan’s Son
Napalm
A sort of standard stoner metal with a doomy feel.  SOme slower-mid-tempo type stuff.  Big meaty riffs, some clean creepy 70’s sounding vocals and the music has a good groove.

Miasmic Theory
Miasmic Theory CD
Inverse
A catchy heavy thrashy melodic death metal.  It’s brutal and heavy and has good production… while it’s not breaking new ground, it’s cool stuff!

THE CHANT
New Haven
Lifeforce
Kind of some prog/melodic rock…. maybe some doomy metal feel too. A little bit like Porcupine Tree.

URIAH HEEP
Outsider
Frontiers Records
Classic rock type stuff, you know that 70’s throwback sound, but oh, wait, these guys have been doing it since then, just not some new band trying to sound like they’re in the 70’s.  This stuff rocks, they’re still rockin’ the organ and have a proggy hard rock feel.

Falconer
Black Moon Rising
Metal Blade Records
I always remembered these guys as a heavier power metal band… I could be remembering wrong, but yeah, these guys are still basically power metal, but it sounds to me like there’s a bit of a stoner metal and folk feel too. The folk feel mostly just comes from the vocal style, there aren’t any hurdygurdys or accordions or anything.

New Stuff This Week… 6/2/14

TRAP THEM
Blissfucker
Prosthetic
Heavy, grindy, stoner metal with attitude. Big wall of metallic riffs and intense drumming with screamed, pissed off vocals.

HEAVY GLOW
Pearls and Swine and Everything Fine
Purge
A catchy Clutch-like stoner metal thing, not really all that heavy, but fun and jammin’.

BROTHER FIRETRIBE
Diamond in the Firepit
Spinefarm
Old school AOR type hard rock from Nightwish Guitarist Emppu Vuorinen.  Kind of a power-metal “light”  Reminds me of some of that 90’s hard rock from like Honeymoon Suite or Damn Yankees or stuff like that.  While it’s pretty neat stuff, probably not Mosh Pit material.

Voyager
Voyager
IAV/Nightmare Records
Proggy hard rock/metal with djent stuff and more of a light, clean prog thing like Porcupine Tree or Fair to Midland/Karnivool type stuff. Maybe a pinch of a Volbeat sound too.

Bury Tomorrow
Runes
Nuclear Blast USA
Sort of a metalcore thing… you have that heavier, brutal stuff, then you hit the chorus… it’s actually where you expect some whiney auto-tune vocals and it’s just nice, well sung clean vocals.  Heavy stuff stays brutal and growly with chunky thrashy riffs.  Overall, it’s a melodic metalcore thing. good stuff.

Dust Bolt
Awake The Riot
Napalm Records
Thrashy metal.  Main guitar riffs are a bit like some Hanneman-esque Slayer sounding stuff. The rest of the music and vocals are some cool throwback, yet modern-ish thrashy stuff.

Swarþ
Omines Pestilentiae DLP
Iron Bonehead
A low-production-ish old school black/death metal.  Lots of creepy yelling and screaming, sludgey music.

Opium Warlords
Taste My Sword Of Understanding
Svart Records
Long sludgey post-metal.

Vanhelga
Längtan
Art of Propaganda
Experimental ecclectic stuff which makes you think while listening… “is this music?”  “do I have something else playing in the background?”  I mean some parts have some neat stuff, but with so much happening and to wonder WTF… yeah, meh.

Demonic Rage
Venomous Wine From Putrid Bodies LP
Iron Bonehead
Death metal.  Great heavy riffage, just an overall evil dark feeling too.  But classic brutal death metal.

Hard Riot
The Blackened Heart
Pitch Black Records
A hard rock band with a bit of a 90’s hard rock/metal sound. Clean vocals, melodic stuff, catchy, almost sing-along songs.

Deus Ignotus
Procession of an Old Religion MCD
Forever Plagued
Kind of a basic black/death metal.  Very brutal, everything kind of mooshes together, but it all works as a grindy/sludgey black metal.

On Top
Top To Bottom CD
Horror Pain Gore Death Productions
Vocals remind me of Death Angel, music is more of a Steel Panther type thing, a fun catchy hard rock.  Overall a catchy classic metal sounding EP.

Waxen
Agios Holokauston
Moribund
Intense fast, heavy black metal.  Nothing fancy, just brutal black metal.

BLOODY HAMMERS
Under Satan’s Sun
Napalm Records
A melodic hard rock thing with a little bit of a stoner metal vibe.

The Osiris Club
Blazing World
Indie Recordings
Kind of a creepy, alternative proggy hard rock thing. A throwback 70’s stoner metal vibe, but also a little bit of a horror movie soundtrack vibe too.

New Stuff This Week… 5/26/14

Crowbar
Symmetry in Black
eOne
Been three years since a new Crowbar album, and you know, they’ve always been “ok” to me, mostly I’m not a fan of sludgey noisy stuff with shouty growls and whatever. Well, I’m older now, and well, it seems like Crowbar is too. Right out of the gate, catchy riffs, solid groove and melodic stuff. Actually reminds me of Down. So, Kirk did leave Down, mostly so he could concentrate on this band and it shows. So now we have three albums from the Down family out… the Down EP, this Crowbar and Eyehategod… and they’re all pretty good!

King 810
Proem EP
Roadrunner
Kinds of reminds me of a stonery Slipknot. Big meaty sound, appropriately pissed off sounding. Seems dark and heavy like, almost building up to something super heavy and brutal and death metal-like, but actually it stays a bit down tempo and that’s actually ok. Works out being pretty heavy and not all super fast and technical.

Timo Tolkki’s Avalon
Angels of the Apocalypse
Frontiers
Epic Metal Opera featuring mostly Fabio Lione on vocals with Zak Stevens on a track, Floor Jansen and Simone Simons and others. This is your sort of typical euro-epic power metal with big epic vocals.

Metsatoll
Karjajuht
Spinefarm
Folk metal from Estona! This is like, true folk metal with a flute and bagpipes and that stuff… but still all catchy metal!

Judas Priest
Marched Of The Damned “Single”
Epic Records
A new Priest song! Well, it’s no Painkiller, and actually starts off a little weak, but then some of the riffs come in and it seems like a decent hard rock type track.

Sabaton
Heroes
Nuclear Blast USA
Melodic folky power metal. A little like Blind Guardian, a little Iced Earth and a bit more of, oh, pick a folky metal band. There’s a bit of an epic feel with the keyboard stuff and singalong stuff. With the folky and epic powermetalness of it all, there’s still great shredding and enough thrashy stuff to get you all headbanging.

Dead Superstar
Searching For The Sun “Single”
BFX Records
Straightforward melodic hard rock type stuff. It’s pretty catchy with a pinch of a stoner metal vibe.

SERPENTINE PATH
Emanations (NA Promo)
Relapse Records
A sludgey down tempo death metal with a bit of a groove.

Blood Red Fog
On Death’s Wings
Saturnal Records
Some old school sounding black metal, cold sounding guitars, creepy screamed and yelled vocals. A bit scary actually… but decent solid black metal.

Hellspirit
Dawn Under Curse
Saturnal Records
A more traditional black metal album, evil and dark, yet melodic and full on metal with a pinch of thrash.

Eyes Of Mara
Akkadia
Imminence Records
A thrashy metalcore leaning more on the brutal-core side of things. Heavy, aggressive, in your face, maybe a bit like Black Dahlia Murder… technical chops, heavy riffs, catchy riffs and maybe a bassdrop/breakdown or two.

Serpent Ov Old
Antiquity Ov Old
Horror Pain Gore Death
Seems like any band that spells of “ov” just gets extra evil points right away. This is some pretty cool traditional sounding black metal. Harsh vocals, thos “cold” guitars, some decent melody, frenetic drumming… and some shreddy guitar too.

WE ARE THE DAMNED
Doomvirate
Lifeforce
Fast, heavy blackened death metal.

Killgasm
A Stab in the Heart of Christ
Moribund
Dark black evil black metal. Screaming, growling blast beats, cold droning riffs

HOLLOW
Mordrake
Self-Release (Asher Media)
Kind of an epic black metal type thing. Lots of quick guitar work, but probably more of a melodic black metal than old school stuff. A lot of prog elements as well. So yeah, cool proggy symphonic epic black metal.

New Stuff This Week… 5/19/14

Wovenwar
All Rise – Single
Metal Blade Records
This was to be a side-project of most of the members of As I Lay Dying… well, with Tim Lambesis being in trouble and stuff, this is a real “band” now. It’s the rest of the As I Lay Dying members with the singer from Oh, Sleeper. So, the song… metalcore, catchy, melodic, clean vox, decent guitar work and music and all that, but a little bit “emo” on the vocals I guess.

Mindcage
The One Constant “Single”
Kinematic Music
Booooo.. Just a single. Great proggy power metal though… Mostly power metal, but with a bit of an edge and enough prog to keep it interesting.

Mattersphere
Mattersphere
Omni Entertainment
Some hard rock / standard metal type stuff. Clean vocals, almost a heavier AOR with a bit of metal thrown in.

NECRODEATH
The 7 Deadly Sins
Scarlet Records
Thrashy black metal. Fast, in your face brutal metal!

Boris The Blade
The Human Hive
Siege of Amida
Brutal technical death metal. No other way to describe it. Good stuff.

MARTY FRIEDMAN
Inferno
Prosthetic
Marty’s first metal album released in the US in a long long time. And I’d say it’s about time! First two tracks are awesome thrashy shredding metal… the rest of the tracks have a little bit of collaboration on them with people such as Rodriego y Gabriela, Danko Jones, Alexi Laiho and a track co-written by Jason Becker

EYEHATEGOD
Eyehategod
Housecore
HEavy, grindy sludgy stoner sound… just like they’ve always had. The first track has a little bit of a punk vibe. But then it slides into what they’re known for.

CROBOT
Crobot EP
(Wind-Up)
Melodic Hard rockin’ metal with a hint of a 70’s and stoner vibe. Great clean vocals with range, cool catchy riffs, harmonies and cool melodic stuff all with a great solid rock going on. There’s a bit of a Clutch or Zeppelin thing going on, but maybe a Winery Dogs thing too.

BEARTOOTH
“Dead”/”Beaten In Lips”
(Red Bull)
A raw punk infused thrashy metal EP. While I’m not a fan of Punk, there’s just enough to still like… the metal-ness of this is pretty good in one track, and the other starts out pretty good, but gets a bit metal-core-ish

Mirzadeh
Desired Mystic Pride
Inverse
Melodic / symphonic black metal.

Henric Blomqvist & Friends
All Of Your Illusions
Secret Entertainment
a 70’s hard rock thing that sounds a bit like old Dio.

Landskap
I LP
Iron Bonehead
Two tracks, one 15 min, one is 19 min. Long drawn out doomy gothy stoner metal.

HYPERBOREAN
MYTHOS OF THE GREAT PESTILENCE
SELF RELEASED
Swedish black-ish metal. It’s a bit thrashy, technical, proggy and mostly death and black metal. But on the surface, I guess you’d call it black metal. Decent production, it’s all on brutal and a bit raw too (at least vocally). Pretty good stuff for being self-released.

Vainaja
Kadotetut
Svart Records
Dark doomy death metal. It’s all growly death vocals in Finnish. While the music is doomy, there’s a bit of a melodic feel which doesn’t make it seem tooooo depressing.

Insense
De:Evolution
Mas-Kina Recordings/Indie Recordings
This has a bit of a commercial metal sound going on at its base, but kind of taking over the top is a more metal (distorted guitar) layer
