New Stuff This Week… 5/12/14

DEATH
Leprosy (2-Disc Reissue)
Relapse Records
Any excuse to play Death… Bonus stuff on this release are rehearsal versions of tracks.

MUSHROOMHEAD
The Righteous & The Butterfly
Megaforce
Well, below I mention Avatar being a bit simliar to Slipknot… well, this band doesn’t even need to be mentioned in the same breath… they had a history of bad blood which is apparently all cleared up.  And I guess if there IS any band that is similar to Slipknot in just about all ways, it’s this one.  They always have put out solid albums and live shows sticking mostly to their formula… This keeps the Mushroomhead machine going… not all brutal and heavy – they never really were, but they

SYLAR
To Whom It May Concern
Razor & Tie
It’s a bit metalcore, some Linkin Park, some hardcore and some thrashy metal.  I’m a little on the fence, because of the Linkin Park and metalcore parts…

THE LAST VEGAS
Sweet Salvation
Culvert
A cool catchy hard rock with a little nod to some hair metal sound.

DOWN
Down IV Part II
(Down/ADA)
Damn… This just reminds me of the first Down album… and it’s still a wow factor.  Amazing that they can capture this same magic after all these years.  Good stuff.

Avatar
Hail The Apocalypse
eOne Entertainment
These guys have the image that they’d be some mall-core band, but they just make catchy semi-brutal tracks… The closest thing I can think of that they remind me of is Slipknot… but not quite as serious.  There’s a little bit of a folk element, and melodic stuff, but catchy as all hell and fun to listen to.

Dio
Live From London Hammersmith Apollo 1993
Eagle Rock Entertainment
A live dio show from 21 years ago… this sort of setlist from this time is more or less a greatest hits played live too.  It actually sounds really live, not all “fixed” in post.   This is a previously unreleased show… also on DVD too…

Pet The Preacher
The Cave & The Sunlight
Napalm Records
A heavy stoner metal band with a loud grungy guitar sound, kind of sung with a bit of an edge – almost Down-like sound. A little bit of a Clutch vibe too.

Vallenfyre
Splinters
Century Media
Brutal old school death metal sound with a pinch of grind and black metal.

Miasmal
Cursed Redeemer
Century Media
Kind of an Entombed-like Death Metal thing with a bit of melody, these Gothenburg Swedes keep it brutal while still making it interesting.

Psychotic Gardening
Hymnosis
Self-Release  (asher media)
Death Metal with monster heavy riffage, a bit of a freight train gallop, classic cookie monster vocals.

Dominium
War Ritual
Horror Pain Gore Death
A bit of an old school black metal thing… so I’m sitting here, doing these reviews and stuff… but let this play in the backround while doing some other ‘net surfing… good stuff

Strafk
Phaseshifting
Wraith Productions
A bit of a disjointed sounding ambient “metal” thing.

HOLY SHIRE
Midgard
Bakerteam Records
Power metal with a bit of folksie stuff (flutey-keyboard stuff) There are some female vocals and symphonic type stuff too.  But then there’s some cool heavier thrashy stuff going on here and there too.

Noctooa
Adaptation
Pesanta Urfolk
Not quite sure this belongs in my inbox… not sure where it would even go.  strings, low pitch vocals, not even sure if this is rock!?

Hell (oregon)
Trilogy
Pesanta Urfolk
More post metal noise type stuff.  I’m not sure if I’ve liked anything on this label.

Blood and Sun
White Storms Fall
Pesanta Urfolk
Folky rock stuff.  see above… I supposed if the word “folk” is in the label name… that might say something.

Abbey ov Thelema
Liber DCLXVI
Wraith Productions
An interesting mix of symphonic metal, black metal, and some atmospheric stuff?   Encyclopaedia Metallum has them as Avant-Garde Black Metal.  So yeah it’s a bit all over the place, but all dark and evil.

Various Artists
Salud Mortales (Free Download)
Icarus Music (Online Metal Promo)
A 50+ song sampler of a metal radio show from Argentina.  Lots of bands, lots of tracks, haven’t even listened to it yet!  I’m sure it’s cool, cuz metal shows on the radio are cool. 😀

Hades Archer / Slaughtbbath
Circus of Abominations / Antichristos Thanatos – split LP
Iron Bonehead
Hades Archer is 5 tracks and Slaughtbbath is 2… both are fairly straightforward brutal black metal.  Slaughtbbath has 2 long songs and maybe digs a little deeper… but both are pretty decent.

Landskap
I LP
Iron Bonehead
70’s metal throwback stuff, Sabbath meets Blue Oyster Cult type stuff.

Ranger
Shock Skull 7″
Ektro
Raw thrashy stuff, over the top screamy vocals (almost like The Darkness)… but also there’s a bit of an edge and growl in parts too.

New Stuff This Week… 5/5/14

Arch Enemy
“As the Pages Burn” (single)
Century Media
Track number two from the new Arch Enemy, and no disappointment yet.  Yes, I’m a fan boy of this band, but damn, this new album will be just like when Wages of Sin came out… a new beginning of more awesome.

Glamour of the Kill
Savages
eOne
A bit of a poppy metal thing with all those catchy things going on.  Just a bit too poppy though.

Kyng
Burn the Serum
Razor and Tie
Probably the best stoner metal since Spiritual Beggars and Clutch.  Catchy songs, great riffs, melodic hooks… all that cool stuff. Vocals have a nice modern, yet throwback sound.

stOrk
Broken Pieces
MUSO
A sort of supergroup featuring the former touring guitarist from Korn, (Shane Gibson – who just died a couple weeks ago), Female Vocalist VK Lynne and session drummer Thomas Lang.  This is sort of a proggy Avant Garde thing. At first listen, it’s a bit weird and quirky, but giving it a longer listen, it’s all pretty cool!

GREENLEAF
TRAILS & PASSES
(Small Stone Records)
The 70’s throwback metal trend continues…great meaty sound, great drumming, catchy zeppelin meets sabbath meets clutch vibe.

Autopsy
Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Grave
Peaceville Records
A doomy, grindy death metal thing with some downtempo brutal stuff

Killer Be Killed
Killer Be Killed
Nuclear Blast USA
A super group featuring the frontman of Dillinger Escape Plan, Max Cavalera, Bassist from Mastodon and former drummer from Mars Volta.  It’s sort of a mix of all of their bands, but with more of an accessible catchy hard rock thing pulling out front and center.

Sworn Enemy
Living On Borrowed Time
Rock Ridge Music
A pioneer of taking hardcore and making it more metal…  well this is their first new album in 5 years and they are doing what they do well… great new stuff. same formula.

Epica
The Quantium Enigma
Nuclear Blast USA
A lot of bands can compare to Epica these days… operattic female vocals, epic symphonic stuff, and metal music, but no one really lives up to Epica!  They are just on a whole different level.  More “epic” and definitely more metal, better contrast between growls and Simone’s vox.  it’s been a while since they’ve put out an album, and it’s worth the wait.

SEPTEKH
PLAN FOR WORLD DOMINATION
STUDIO 508 PRODUCTIONS / ABYSS RECORDS
Kind of a thrashy death metal from Sweden.  Basic stuff, but pretty cool, with a bit of a melodic overtone going on too.

XANDRIA
Sacrificum
Napalm Records
Epic female fronted metal and one of the few metal bands that starts with the letter X!  Musically a bit more of a metal edge than typical symphonic “fe-metal”  So yeah, a bit like Epica but without the cool deathy stuff.

Voice Of Ruin
Morning Wood
Tenacity Music
Not too many metal bands out of Switzerland, but these guys are making a name for their home country.  A bit Lamb of God, a bit oh, some Death Metal and thrashy stuff. Song titles (and the album title for that matter) have a sense of humor and well, that’s cool when everyone seems to be taking themselves so seriously these days. The music is serious business here though.  Complex, yet catchy and brutal.  This is the underground pick of the week!

The Golden Grass
The Golden Grass
Svart Records
A real 70’s throwback.  I’d have to say this isn’t in the metal category, but it’s fun to listen to!

Alexanred
Rest After Result
Inverse
More electronic than anything.  Maybe tune into Something Wonderful (the show before the Mosh Pit) to hear this!

Process Pain
Outcast Of Society
Inverse
Inverse used to always have winners, after a few duds (for our show at least), it’s nice to have something up to par again.  A brutal thrash thing.  Metallic riffs, growly vocals and a pinch of hardcore.

New Stuff This Week… 4/28/14

Whitechapel
Our Endless War
Metal Blade Records
Modern death metal with the technical chops and yeah, these days it means a bit of djent too. There’s no shortage of brutality on this!

Aborted
Necrotic Manifesto
Century Media
Been waiting for this one for a while.  This band has been around for a while and they are known for not fucking around.  This album is no different.  Blistering brutal death metal with nice catchy riffs.

PRONG
Ruining Lives
SPV
Been a fan of these guys for, well, like forever.  Great to see that Tommy is still kicking around and putting out Prong records.  This still has that catchy Prong sound, but maybe just a bit more of a straightforward metal sound and not as much of that signature super catchy stuff.  Yeah, it’s still catchy, but the best years are behind.

MISS MAY I
Rise of the Lion
Rise
Fairly catchy metalcore type stuff. A good brutal thrashy edge but with a pinch of that “Core” sound, some clean sung parts, but they really aren’t all whiney/emo, just decent catchy metal.

RODRIGO Y GABRIELA
9 Dead Alive
(ATO)
While this isn’t “proper” metal, it’s still pretty cool.  Just two people playing guitars and rocking that shit out.

Anti-Mortem
100% Pure American Rage (Single)
Nuclear Blast USA
Some new modern metal from some young guys in Oklahoma.

Helstar
This Wicked Nest
AFM Records
This band does metal right. Great thrashy catchy metal stuff, over the top vocals, and just overall great stuff.  James Rivera has been around in just about every band, but this is his own original band and it’s the real deal.

Klogr
Black Snow
Zeta Factory
Kind of a commercial hard rock/metal sounding thing from Italy. There’s a bit of a cool metal edge, but the main vibe is a bit of a mainstream metal.

Arkona
Yav
Napalm Records
Kind of a folky black metal from Russia, fairly long tracks, a bit proggy and it’s pretty decent stuff!

Saxon
St Georges Day Sacrifice, Live In Manchester
UDR Music
One of those new live albums from an old band… sounds great, decent setlist.  Probably a must have for the true fan!

Aurvandil
Thrones
Eisenwald
Long “post metal” like endurance test songs.  blah.

Devil You Know
The Beauty Of Destruction
Nuclear Blast
This band certainly has the pedigree… Howard Jones (Ex KsE), Francesco from All Shall Perish, Drummer from Fear Factory/Divine Heresy… A fairly solid metal effort with a little bit of an accessible sound.  Probably a bit too heavy to be “solid rock” though.

FAKE IDOLS
Fake Idols
LIfeforce
Modern commercial-like metalcore type stuff.  Probably going to have to pass on adding this one this week. It’s okay stuff, just not really for the Mosh Pit.

Curimus
Artificial Revolution
Freezing Penguin / Svart Records
Finnish thrashy death metal. Good stuff. great riffs, almost has a pinch of stoner metal going on too.  Brutal vocals, nothing ground breaking but good solid metal.

Vanhelga
Längtan
Art of Propaganda
Kinda sounds like someone took an old school black metal record and played it at the same time as a singer/songwriter album. I guess some tracks have a bit more black metal, some are bit more laid back.  I actually had to check and see if something was playing in a different web browser tab.  meh.

SadDolls
Grave Party
Inverse Records
Kind of a gothy industrial thing.  I am passing this along to WORT show SOmething Wonderful… it’s on before us, 8-11 Monday nights!

Martyr Defiled
No Hope No Morality
Siege of Amida
Brutal heavy modern death metal.

Insomnium
Shadows Of The Dying Sun
Century Media
Probably the closest thing to Amorphis that you’ll get.  Melodic proggy metal.  Great stuff that probably gets better with every listen too.

Dismemberment
Embrace The Dark
Horror Pain Gore Death
Heavy catchy blackened death metal with a modern sound and good production. There’s a great classic death metal feel with technicality mixed in there too.

Portrait
Crossroads
Metal Blade Records
A bit Mercyful Fate, a bit Iron Maiden, a little bit of Ghost and I hear a pinch of Fates Warning a bit too.  Pretty cool stuff which has a throwback feel, but not really.

So Hideous
Last Poem / First Light
Prosthetic Records
Here’s a copy/paste from the write up on this band/album:   The band, which features brothers Brandon (guitars) and Chris Cruz (vocals/bass) alongside longtime friends Danny Moncada (drums) and Etienne Vazquez (guitars), forms an emotionally diverse mélange of post-hardcore, symphonic black metal and experimental/shoegaze fused with classical influences.  So I copy/pasted that before listening to it with a feeling that it’d be spot on.  And yup, it sure is!  Couldn’t say it better myself.

Albinö Rhino
Albinö Rhino
Inverse
Big sludgey stoner metal sound with a little bit of a Mastodon feel.
