New Stuff This Week… 3/31/14

STEEL PANTHER
All You Can Eat
Open E/Kobalt
You just can’t go wrong with this band.  Non-PC, funny, hard rockin’, fun lovin’.

THE INTERSPHERE
Relations in the Unseen
Long Branch
Cool proggy hard rock/metal, probably most similar to like a Porcupine Tree.

CREMATORY
Antiserum
SPV
Doomy melodic death metal type stuff with some keyboards and catchy metal stuff too.  Reminds me a little of some Moonspell.

Ronnie James Dio
This Is Your Life
Rhino Records
Dio Tribute album, a sort of compilation, Anthrax, Adrenaline Mob, Tenacious D, Metallica.  Lots of great bands doing great songs well.  No slouches here.

Hatriot
Dawn of The New Centurion
Massacre
Steve Zetro Sousa’s band… great thrashy stuff with his great voice, plus two of his kids are in the band!

Sonata Arctica
Pariah’s Child
Nuclear Blast
Way back in the day, I thought this band was pretty cool, back when this power metal genre was just getting off the ground, since then, lots more bands sound like them, and heavier cool stuff is out there…. but you know what, it’s kinda nice that this band is still around and doing what they’re doing.  Nice to get refreshed again.

Delain
The Human Contradiction
Napalm Records
It’s your typical fe-metal thing… decent metal with female vox and some epic stuff here and there.

Lacuna Coil
Broken Crown Halo
Century Media
Been a couple years since their last.  This one is a bit more heavy than some previous stuff.  It still is your typical Lacuna Coil with the two singers going back and forth.

Ceremonial (Chile)
Ars Magicka 7″ EP
Blood Harvest
Old school thrashy black metal sound, creepy evil vocals, great riffs, and a great undergound metal EP.

Sargeist
Feeding The Crawling Shadows
W.T.C.Productions
Dark, classic black metal sound with some melody and groove, but still “cold” sounding black metal.

Pilgrim
II: Void Worship
Metal Blade Records
Big meaty riffs, some powerful and sorta creepy vocals and yeah, it’s stoner metal.

Massacre
Back From Beyond
Century Media
Not too many just straightforward death metal albums these days.  This is their first album since 1996, and it probably could have been released them too.  A cool retro death metal thing going on, like, oh, they haven’t needed to do whatever.  It’s nice to just have this sort of sound.

Relief In Sleep
Godspeed
Imminence
Some fe-metal type stuff, a bit of a pop-metal feel musically.

Erebus Enthroned
Temple Under Hell
Seance
A bit of a technical death metal/black metal thing

Heresiarch
Wælwulf 7″ EP
Iron Bonehead
Doomy, downtempo death metal

Cemetery Fog
Shadows From The Cemetery TAPE
Iron Bonehead

New Stuff This Week… 3/24/14

Down
We Knew Him Well (Single)
Down Records
One thing about Down, they are consistent.  While this is just a single.  Great riffs, Phil’s good vocals, a bit of a southern stoner sludge sound and seemingly a lot of metal emotion.  Can’t wait to hear more!

Pantera
Far Beyond Driven
Rhino
Great excuse to play this album again.  The 20th Anniversary re-issue includes a 2nd album of a live show from 1994… great stuff.

Ageless Oblivion
Penthos
Siege of Amida
Back in the day, this would just be called Death Metal… today we probably have to throw it into a bit more of a sub-genre.  I guess it’d be more of a Progressive Death Metal thing.  Yea, it’s full on brutal, but there’s just a bit something more.  It’s got catchy riffs and some more intricate playing and melodic stuff too.

Lost Society
Terror Hungry
Nuclear Blast
Not really any sub-genre here, pretty much just metal.  A bit thrashy, a hint of some AC/DC and all catchy. ( only have a single so far)

From Hell
Ascent From Hell
Scourge Records
Oh, just a guy from Death Angel (Damien Sisson), a guy from “Slayer” (Paul Bostaph) and a guy from Nevermore (Steve Smyth) and Producer/Lead Vox George Anderson.  A brutal deathy/thrashy mix and pure brutality.

I Declare War
We Are Violent People By Nature
Razor And Tie
Growly djenty sounding death metal with some melodic proggy stuff rounding it out.

Discipline X
Wasted in Hollywood CD
Inverse Records
Some thrasy stuff with a pinch of Punk from Finland.  Vocals are in english, but the Finnish accent comes through strong and makes it a little bit funny.

Negative Voice
Infinite Dissonance
Inverse Records
Melodic Black metal from Russia.  Cold black metal meedly guitar sound, abrasive vocals, more melodic music (not really any blast beats or stuff like that)  A bit more of a laid back doomy black metal type thing.

SHEAR
Katharsis
Lifeforce
Female fronted melodic metal from Finland.  It’s not really the typical “femetal” with plain ol epic power metal backing it.  I’d say the music is a bit more prog-metal and the vocals are a bit more of a Lita Ford hard rock/metal singer vocals with an edge rather than the operattic sound.

Neige et Noirceur
Gouffre Onirique et Abîmes Cosmiques
Sepulchral Productions
Dark, cold melodic black metal

Unsacred Seed
Frontiers
Self Released (online)
Some pretty cool melodic death metal.  Music is mostly a melodic brutal wall of sound. Vocals range from full growly brutal death metal and some screamed out stuff

New Stuff This Week… 3/17/14

MENACE
Impact Velocity
Season of Mist
While this features a guy from Napalm Death, it’s more of a melodic hard rock thing with a little bit of prog, but really kind of steering away from anything truly metal.

HAMMERCULT
Steelcrusher
SPV
Just the name of the band and album… along with the album art, you kind of figure you’re going to be in for something over the top, maybe something like Manowar or heavier…well yeah, that’s what we’re getting. We’re talking probably some blackened thrash here, and from Israel of all places too.  A little bit of the bay area sound, but vocals are more along the blackened screaming… a hint of “epic-ness” in some of the guitar tone.

Bigelf
Into The Malestrom
Inside Out Music
Aside from being a Mike Portnoy fanboy, I actually like this album.  Yes, Portnoy kind of threw this band out there with an early Prog Nation tour with Dream Theater, and he plays on this album… but really the easiest way to describe this band/album… Take the Beatles, and put them in a blender with Black Sabbath and some 70’s epic prog and some Thin Lizzy…

Riotgod
Driven Rise
Metalville Records
Melodic metal, almost reminds me of Queen meets Deep Purple/Led Zep a little bit.  Well sung clean vocals, cool catchy riffs

Assassins
War of Aggression
eOne Entertainment
Metalcore, for the most part raw and heavy, but then you do get a few clean singy parts, the heavy stuff had a good brutal feel with a bit of a groove, but sometimes the emo-ish clean vocals take away from the great brutality.

The Bunny The Bear
Food Chain
Victory Records
I guess this would be sort of prog/experimental metalcore.  You got your like, clean happy vocals, then you got some really dark evil vocals, and mostly the music is kinda proggy and electronic.  There’s really not much out there just like this, which it has going for it.

Shroud of the Heretic
Revelations in Alchemy LP
Blood Harvest
Loud distorty doomy black metal (with some not so great production)  meh.

Ringworm
Hammer of the Witch
Relapse Records
Apparently this band has been around since the early 90’s!  They were on Victory records for their last 4 releases, this is the first on Relapse.  This is a thrashed up, more pissed off hardcore

Grim Legion
Unholy Resurrection
Horror Pain Gore Death Productions
Some classic raw death metal with a pinch of a thrashy sound.

Vampire
Vampire
Century Media
A fairly new band with an old school sound.  Not that 70’s metal that seems to be the thing these days, this is old school thrashy blackened melodic death metal.  Yeah, a lot of adjectives there, but really they seem to fit all of them fairly well.  Of course something like this is from Sweden, right?

Savage Messiah
The Fateful Dark
Century Media
Not quite a full on thrash thing, but not really a full on power metal.  A good mix between the two.  Great powerful clean vocals, with some balls on the music side.

Gus G.
I Am The Fire
Century Media
Gus G…. Mr Firewind and Ozzy’s guitarist.  Well, this is a solo album with lots of guests.  Cool stuff, great guitar work and shredding.  Musically it’s a bit of a metal leaning melodic hard rock

Dodsferd
The Parasitic Survival of the Human Race
Moribund
Kind of a black metal feel, but a hardcore/motorhead type feel too.

Apparitions
Part 2: The Inferno
Infamous Empire
Metalcore with a Devin Townsend wall of sound type production, female sounding clean vox with that shuffly emo type beat on the clean stuff (perfect for karate kicks and two step dancing)… meh.

Don Jamieson
Hell Bent for Laughter
Metal Blade Records
This guy used to really annoy me, and now he’s grown on me a bit.  How can you go wrong with metal and comedy?
Twilight
III: Beneath Trident’s Tomb
Century Media
Doomy black metal.

Hiidenhauta
Noitia on Minun Sukuni CD
Inverse Records
Inverse records doesn’t seem to have too many duds, and at first listen, a slow-ish melodic fe-metal sung intro… but man, it kicked into some cool melodic prog metal music (with a pinch of black metal sound) and harsh vocals. So, yeah, mixing some clean female vocals with some sweet melodic death with that Finnish metal sound.

New Stuff This Week… 3/10/14

DEMON HUNTER
Extremist
Solid State
These guys went from a metalcore-ish band, to now more of a melodic death metal type thing, a little bit like Soilwork actually.  Decent guitar work, catchy hooks, a good mix between harsh and clean vocals with enough brutal deathy beats to keep it full on metal too.

LORNA SHORE
Maleficium
Density
Brutal modern death metal meets harsh screamy stuff, so I guess you can call it death core.  100% brutal.

I AM HERESY
Thy Will
Century Media
A screamy sort of melodic hardcore

Architects UK
Lost Forever Lost Together
Epitaph Records
Hardcore meets metalcore.  A bit on the screamy side, but they seem to steer clear of the clean singing.  Cool catchy riffs and music.

Comeback Kid
Die Knowing
Victory Records
Brutal thrashy metalcore. Don’t let the band name fool you, this is all metal with some melodic groove too.

Conan
Blood Eagle
Napalm Records
A downtempo sort of shoegazey stoner metal with some “meh” production. Grows on me after a little bit.

Imperial Crypt
Demise Of The Seventh Realm (EP)
Independent
Melodic death metal with black metal tendencies.  Production is a little weak, but the music is great.

Arduous Task / Gravewurm
Spawn Of The Sacrilege Split CD
Horror Pain Gore Death

READY,SET,FALL
Memento
Lifeforce
Some melodic proggy djent technical stuff. Harsh and clean vocals.  Not really metalcore type harsh/clean vox though.  Pretty cool.

Desecrater
Wretched
Self Released (Donarus PR)
A thrashy death metal thing.  A good groove, harsh, abrasive, growly vocals.  A wall of sound of meaty guitar riffs with a pinch of grind thrown in.

Profezia
Oracolo Suicida
Moribund
A dark creepy black metal with violins and just a scary feel.

Bleeding Fist
Deaths Old Stench
Moribund
An old school raw black metal thing.  Sounds a bit like it was recorded in a cave.

CHAIN OF DOGS
BURNING BRIDGES IN A WORLD OF DEATH – DE EP’S EN NOG GET MIEË
WITCHES BREW
That fun catchy, bouncy folk metal with flutes and violins and stuff.  Pretty cool if you like the folk metal.  The metal stuff stays metal with fast drums and cool guitar work, but the occasional slower part too.

Scars Divide
Scars Divide
Tenacity Music
Technical, melodic, brutal, metalcore-ish and a little screamo with a pinch of doom.  While we’ve heard all the stuff that this comes from, and this sounds like a lot of stuff, it does sound different from a lot of stuff too.  This unique combination of the prog-metal, metalcore and doomy post-metal (just a little bit) all mix well to make up their signature sound.

Entartung
Peccata Mortalia
W.T.C.Productions
A classic black metal sound (decent production). A wall of cold, dark sound just filling your ears with noisy guitars with a bit of a groove and some melodic goodness. And yes, brutal drumming, evil shrilly vocals and all the good stuff you come to expect from black metal.

Tortorum
Katabasis
W.T.C.Productions
Another release from WTC Production (as with the Entartung above)… good classic sounding black metal. This one is a bit heavier and more blast beats, but still all great stuff.

Immoral Hazard (Greece)
Convulsion
Self Released
March 9th 2014
Great metal riffs, and a great overall thrashy metal feel.

Shroud of the Heretic
Revelations in Alchemy
Blood Harvest
Noisy grindy wall of sludgy metal sound. I guess it’d fall under the blackened sludge metal

Armageddon Rev.16:16
Sundown on Humanity
Pitch Black Records
A bit of a standard “metal” thing, or power metal.  Probably the only metal band that I know of from Cyprus. Decent metal with a little bit of a prog metal feel.
