New stuff this week… 7/6/09

Killswitch Engage
Killswitch Engage
Roadrunner
38:16 – 11 Tracks
Well, this album starts off pretty catchy and heavy… although still retaining their melodic-ness.   As you go a bit deeper into the CD, it’s pretty much signature KsE.  They have an outside producer this time, no Adam Dutkiewicz.  For pioneers in the metalcore scene, they keep it alive, but still seem to push it forward, keeping some really cool metal stuff, yet not sounding like a genre that is “soooo 2004”

Arkaea
Years In The Darkness
E1
34:40 – 8 Tracks
A lot of buzz around this band… half Fear Factory (Ray & Christian), half Threat Signal (Jon & Pat).   And it sounds pretty much how you’d think… pretty much later Fear Factory stuff… heavy, fast, with abrasive vocals alternating with some clean vocals.   I guess 5 of the tracks were written as FF songs, but since that “band” is in the middle of not existing the way it was, they got moved into this project.  Good stuff.

Sex Slaves
Wasted Angel
Loch Ness
41:44 – 13 Tracks
Kind of a punk-y fun lovin’ almost 80’s glam sounding LA band….. but they are from NY.  Not that location has anything to do with it… Songs kind of have a shuffle-y beat going on with a bit of a Marilyn Manson bassline feel… but without the creepyness.

Arsonists Get All The Girls
Portals
Century Media
52:53 – 11 Tracks
We didn’t play much from their last album, as I recall, it came in the mail extra late, and there was a whole lot of other new stuff going on, vacations, blah blah blah, it just got lost in the shuffle.  They have like a fun brutal experimental thing going on.   All out brutality in parts… and maybe some electronic stuff mixed in leading up to an all out brutal breakdown.  Also some neat, creepy electronic stuff mixed in to add  some dynamic to what otherwise would just be more mindless brutalcore.

Suicide Silence
No Time To Bleed
Century Media
37:45 – 11 Tracks
After seeing these guys live a few times in the last year, in general they just step everything up a notch.  It carries over to this album…The vocals are just over the top, music is just brutal, fast and out of hand.  They know what brutal core should be.   This is just fast all out death metal/brutal metal/ brutal core.

The Crimson Armada
Guardians
Metal Blade
41:33 – 10 Tracks
At first I thought I was listening to some Killswitch Engage again… the music right off the bat sounds like that, but the vocals just kick into classic cookie monster, then go to that brutal/deathcore abrasive scream, and break into some black metal riffage and vocals followed up by some cool melodic guitar while staying heavy the whole time.   They tend to hit on a lot of different current metal genres… (as I just mentioned) and make it work.

As You Drown
Reflection
Metal Blade
34:14 – 9 Tracks
This is just heavy, brutal, all out death metal… reminds me of Behemoth and that level of blackened death metal.  Every track has a big thick heavy wall of metal sound coming at you.   Just a relentless force of brutality…. which after 8 tracks in a row… makes you want to chill with something a bit less heavy!  Or… kick it up a notch?

Twisted Sister
Stay Hungry (2CD)
Rhino
Disc 1: 37:03 – 9 Tracks
Disc 2: 39:27 – 18 Tracks
Disc one is just the normal remastered Stay Hungry… Disk two has previously unreleased stuff followed up by a new track!   Wow, talk about gettin’ sales figures up!  The new track actually sounds pretty decent… kind of a bluesy influenced metal track.
