New stuff this week 5/7/07

Immolation
Shadows In The Light
Century Media
40:33 – 10 Tracks
Good ol classic Death metal from Immolation.  The mix sounds just a little boomy, but other than that, just classic heavy, almost sludgey death metal with some cool guitar solos here and there.  Can’t say there’s anything groundbreaking here, but it’s always good to get some meat and potatoes death metal from a band that’s been around a long time!   You’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!

Megadeth
United Abominations
Roadrunner
48:01 – 11 Tracks
Well, this is about what I’d expect from the “new” Megadeth after seeing them play a few times in the last couple years.  A good solid, fairly heavy effort.  Andy Sneap handled the mixing, so you know it’s going to sound clean and crisp.   It’s a lot more cohesive than the last album, as Dave’s actually got a real band this time.  This is what the modern Megadeth should sound like!   It’s not all out thrash, but it is a good solid metal album.  Of course, it’s angry and mad at war/terrorism and all that…  You’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!

Job For A Cowboy
Embedded (Single)
Genesis
Metal Blade
3:35 – 1 Track
Good intense heavy death metal along the likes of Dying Fetus, Suffocation, etc.  Another release mastered by Andy Sneap, again, of course it sounds great, the man is a master!   You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit, I’m looking forward to getting the full length!

Mother Night
Mother Night
Locomotive
69:06 – 12 tracks
This is some classic sounding hard rock with female vocals, at first thought, it sounds like Doro or something along those lines.  It doesn’t ever seem to really get going.  The songs are all fairly good hard rock songs, but it just does not seem like Mosh Pit material.

Alesana
On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax
Fearless Records
55:57 – 15 Tracks
Well, this is interesting, three vocalists, a female emo sounding guy, an metalcore screamer and some cookie monster.  Three guitarists.  It does sound like some metalcore, but with so many more dynamics.  It’s just not the typical metal-core band.  It still has all the elements that make up emo-metalcore, but there’s just something about this that makes it neat, it stays pretty heavy and has some cool thrash elements too.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Becoming the Archetype
The Physics of Fire (one Track download)
Solid State
Solid heavy stuff from these guys… I’ll have a bigger review when the real CD comes in.  Sounds good for this one track though!

Dublin Death Patrol
DDP 4 Life
Godfodder Records
53:10 – 12 Tracks
Chuck Billy and Steve Souza team up with a bunch of others from the Dublin, CA thrash scene for a bay area thrash super group.  It’s so nice to hear Chuck Billy back again… and Zetro for that matter.  It’s a straightforward metal/thrash album.  Doesn’t seem to get too complex, it’s about what you’d figure, a classic Bay Area thrash sound.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

New stuff this week 4/30/07

Porcupine Tree
Fear Of A Blank Planet
Atlantic
50:53 – 6 Tracks
Well, I’m not sure who decided these guys were metal, but I’m sure with the collaborations with frontman Steven Wilson with Opeth, they crossed that line. Parts of this CD rock out and are metal, but they are pretty few and far between. This is pretty good prog-rock though. It’s not a departure from their last couple albums… If like Opeth’s “Damnation” CD, this is for you. You’ll probably hear a track or two on the Mosh Pit though.

The Destro
As The Coil Unwinds
Metal Blade
46:15 – 11 Tracks
They say on the sheet that came with it that they “plow through stereotypes” Well, to me they sound like Pantera in their heaviest of times. Some good solid metal with a touch of hardcore. It’s not metalcore! There aren’t many other words to describe it as just good ol plain meat and potatoes metal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Invitro
3 Song EP
Gridiron
9:07 – 3 Tracks
This is the new project from Mikey Doling, who was a founding member of Snot as well as a hired guitar gun in Soulfly. The music comes out and stays aggressive and heavy. The vocals are clean and have no growl or abrasive nature to them. The songs are catchy and fun to listen to. I want to say they have a bit of an edge similar to System of a Down, but with a weird Mr. Bungle tinge. It’s not too shabby and better than I was expecting. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Serenity
Words Untold & Dreams Unlived
Napalm
47:30 -10 Tracks
This is more or less Progressive Melodic Metal. It’s just the run of the mill prog-metal wank fest. Clean vocals, some keyboards holding up the background, some good solid guitar work, etc. etc. Nothing new, but it’s not bad, no gimmicks, and as I said above for The Destro, meat and potatoes prog-melodic metal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

A Band Called Pain
Broken Dreams
Hiero Imperium
74:44 – 17 Tracks
A hard rockin’ band musically reminds me of Alice In Chains meets a little pantera with some Chris Cornell-esque vocals. Actually, I hear a lot of King’s X sound in here as well. It’s not really heavy or brutal for that matter, but as you’ve heard me say before, songs are catchy, and it’ll grow on you. The production quality is not so great, and it’s just not all that heavy. Due to this being a slow week, you’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Man Must Die
The Human Condition
Relapse
I actually didn’t get this CD, but you know, one can hear things on the interweb.  It’s fast, heavy, brutal, some sick guitar solos.  It’s just good ol fashioned death metal.   If I get a CD or something I can play on the air, you’ll hear it.

New stuff this week 4/23/07

Beyond The Sixth Seal
The Resurrection Of Everything Tough
Metal Blade
55:58 – 13 Tracks
This features a couple guys from The Red Chord. It kind of has a southern, melodic, death stoner feel to it. They are from Boston, but I guess that doesn’t mean it can’t have a little bit of a southern hard rock feel. But it is heavy throughout… cookie-monster-ish vocals and solid playing make it work just fine. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Back from Ashes
Broken

Desert Core
37:45 – 10 Tracks
Upon first listen, I thought of Damageplan. It’s heavy, but yet, still accessible, and not all that heavy. It has some good ol breakdowns, some clean singy parts, some almost Tool sounding stuff too, maybe a little Static X. It goes back and forth from being pretty good and heavy to some more hard rock-post grunge stuff. You might hear this on the ‘Pit!

Krypteria
Bloodangel’s Cry
Caroline
60:18 – 12 Tracks
It’s another one of those cool metal bands fronted by a opera-like female vocalist. The music is almost Dream-Theater-esque, clean and a bit prog sounding. Of course, obviously the Angtoria, Lacuna Coil, etc comparisons have to be drawn. It’s not bad, but yet just another one of these bands in the crown. I think we’ll still play it on the Mosh Pit!

Finnitroll
Ur Jordens Djup
Century Media
55:55 – 11 Tracks
“Blackened Pagan Folk Metal” That says a lot right there, but it does sum up all that is Finnitroll. This classic sounding black metal band from Finland… this is a great compliment to Dimmu Borgir, while not as evil sounding, it still has the cool keyboard (symphonic) element filling out the sound. It’s not super scary heavy, but it’s catchiness reminds me a bit of some older Amorphis stuff.

Vital Remains
Icons of Evil
Century Media
67:16 – 10 Tracks
One word to describe this: Blasphemous. It’s just pure sonic Evi. Only Glen Benton’s evil vocals can be on a release such as this. It’s just all out evil death metal like only Vital Remains can deliver. Fast, Heavy, intense, probably the music you’d hear if you went to hell. Well, that a normal non-metalhead would hear in hell. I would probably have to hear Bjork or something. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Ozzy Osbourne
I Don’t Want To Stop
Epic
4:00 – 1 Tracks
It’s Ozzy. Has a good low end crunch to it. I mean, hey, it’s Ozzy. I wonder if I sang into that microphone if I’d sound like Ozzy too!? It’s nothing groundbreaking, I mean, Ozzy’s gettin’ up there, why try something new? You’ll probably hear a snippet or two from this tonight.

Dimmu Borgir
In Sorte Diaboli
Nuclear Blast
47:26 – 10 Tracks
This CD is a bit more straightforward for D.B.  It’s heavy in all the right places.  It’s not as crazy theatric as they have been the last couple albums.   It’s what we’ve come to expect from Dimmu… all out brutal modern black metal.  It’s well produced and you’ll be hearing this plenty on the Mosh Pit.  The more you hear it the more you like it!

New stuff this week 4/16/07

Dark Tranquillity
Fiction
Century Media
45:49 – 10 Tracks
Take some of the best melodic Scandinavian metal, and just leave it the way it is… This new CD from the “other” DT (Dream Theater being the “main” DT), is awesome. It’s heavy, it’s melodic, it’s catchy it’s just put together so well. The songs flow, get a bit atmospheric in a part or two, but somehow they keep it heavy and just plain cool. This will definitely get some airtime on the Mosh Pit!

From Autumn To Ashes
Holding A Wolf By The Ears
Vagrant
39:56 – 12 Tracks
One of the more or less pioneers of the metalcore movement are back with their 4th album. It’s pretty heavy, a bit raw, and still metalcore. The heavier stuff is more hardcore than it is metal, but it still has those good ol emo singy parts as any tr00 metalcore will have! It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s still a good release and you may hear it on the Mosh Pit.

Arch Enemy
Black Earth
Regain
42:13 – 12 Tracks
It’s a remaster or re-release or something. Either way, I think this CD has been hard to find for a few years and now it’s back in all it’s groundbreaking glory. Along with Carcass and At The Gates, In Flames, Soilwork, Arch Enemy helped pave the way for the ever popular Scandinavian Melodic Death metal genre. This album has it all, and pre-Angela Gossow vocals (Johan Lilva) are a bit more deathy and guttaral. The guitar solos and music are all as great as Arch Enemy has ever been. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Saxon
The Inner Sanctum
SPV
44:37 – 10 Tracks
They’re Saxon! They have a classic sound, yet it’s still modern and relevant! What can you say about a band that is still around after all these years. It’s not like they are trying to reinvent themselves here, but it is a good solid release. It’s not all speedy and thrashy or anything, although the 2nd and 3rd tracks rip pretty good. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit!

The Chariot
The Fiancee
SolidState
29:39 – 10 Tracks
You take stoner metal, mix it with some hardcore and you have The Chariot. The singer from Norma Jean left that band to form this one. I haven’t heard much in the way of emo-metalcore vocals here. They seem to stay true to the grungy stoner guitar stuff along with raw abrasive vocals. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Six Feet Under
Commandment
Metal Blade
34:30 – 10 Tracks
It’s classic Six Feet Under.  They have a formula, they don’t mess with it.  This album does hearken back to the early days of SFU and that’s about all you can say.  It’s nice to have some fresh, new material, after all of the box sets, cover albums, etc.  You’ll definitely hear this on the Mosh Pit!!
