New stuff this week 11/20/06

Pretty slow week for new stuff, it will be this way until the new year, which means the Mosh Pit gets a bit more fun!

Next week, 11/27 11p-5am, the Mosh Pit will be taking over Rolling With Scissors, making for SIX HOURS of straight metal!!

Tenacious D
The Pick of Destiny
Epic
33:46 – 15 Tracks
It’s Tenacious D. The Greatest band in the world. What can you say? It’s not all that metal, but track one features Meatloaf and Ronnie James Dio himself! Jack Black makes this stuff fun, and I can’t wait to see the movie. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Victory
Fuel To The Fire
Locomotive
47:26 – 12 Tracks
These guys have that mid-90’s hair hard rock sound. And go figure that’s where they are from! The whole screamy vocal and such. It’s pretty decent, straightforward hard rocky stuff. They re-recorded their greatest hits, and this is the result.  I’ve never really heard these guys before, but it sounds good, production is clear and since there isn’t much new stuff this week, you will hear it on the Mosh Pit.

New stuff this week 11/13/06

Frost
Out In The Cold
Screaming Ferret
46:24 – 11 Tracks
Jack Frost from Seven Witches fame has a solo CD out, this album features a bunch of different singers. Going in, you know the guitar work is going to be good and straight ahead metal. It is pretty good, a good variety of metal songs and singers here as well as some fun covers. “Sign of the Gypsy Queen,” “Cold as Ice,” and “Hold On Loosely” to name a few. It’s cool and you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Born From Pain
War
Metal Blade
43:35 – 11 Tracks
This is Metal Blade’s own “Hatebreed” This stays true to good ol hardcore metal. Great riffage, brutal breakdowns. It’s pretty good, it’s a nice break from all the metalcore. You will hear this on the Mosh Pit!!

Killswitch Engage
As Daylight Dies
Roadrunner
43:39 – 11 Tracks
As I mentioned above, it was nice to have a break from all the metalcore, but in this case, it’s nice to have metalcore from one of the pioneers! This album is brutal yet cheesy melodic as only Howard Jones can do. Even though you’ll hear this a lot on other stations in town, we’ll still play it here and there…

Dissillusion
Gloria
Metal Blade
51:12 – 11 Tracks
So, I read the bio sheet that came with this CD and it said “recommended if you like Ulver, Opeth or Rammstein.”  I was thinking, what in the hell would this sound like?  Well, that recommendation was pretty right, it’s got metal heavy sound a bit like Opeth, but enough electronics and vocals to make it more like Rammstein.  Some of the songs get a little too “electronicy” for the Mosh Pit, but all in all, the heavier stuff on here makes it worthwhile.

Lyzanxia
Unsu
Listenable
49:37 – 12 Tracks
This is some darn good thrash stuff.  Lyzanxia is from France!  Technical, melodic thrash with a few different vocal styles mixed in, primarily the thrashy growl.  The vocals remind me a little bit of Meshuggah.  You’ll just have to hear it, so tune into the Mosh Pit!

Textures
Drawing Circles
Listenable
48:23 – 10 Tracks
I mentioned Meshuggah above, and these guys have just about the whole Meshuggah thing going on.  Thrashy, very technical, polyrhythmic, and straight forward.  What drew me a bit bored of Meshuggah, is they were so repetitive, fast, and all the same.  These guys aren’t trying to be as heavy and have some slower melodic “breakdowns”  To top it off, they are Dutch, you don’t see many metal bands coming from The Netherlands, so it’s a bonus.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

New stuff this week 11/6/06

Here’s the new stuff this week… again, to really get a handle on what this stuff is, listen to the show!
36 Crazyfists
Rest Inside the Flames
DRT
40:30 – 11 Tracks
The latest effort from these guys features the stuff they are known for, some great music, abrasive vocals mixed with some clean parts, just like most metal-core bands. What sets these guys apart? They are from Alaska, we (Mike and I) gave them an in depth tour of the Rave, the songs aren’t all show offy and they are catchy. But there is a lot of emo type stuff on this album. So, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit at least this week!

Angtoria
God Has A Plan For Us All
Listenable Records
49:09 – 12 Tracks
This features Sara Jezebel Deva, who’s sung with Cradle of Filth. The music is fairly straight forward prog-metal with a heavy keyboard backing. She’s a straightforward female vocalist that doesn’t really have a great range. Without a female singer, they’d just be another prog-metal band… now they’re just a prog-metal band with an average chick singer. You may hear this on the Mosh Pit.

I
Between Two Worlds
Nuclear Blast
42:37 – 8 Tracks
This is a super group with members from Immortal, Enslaved and Gorgoroth. With all of this black metal history, this has to be good… right? Well, it’s not intense black metal like one would expect. It’s a pretty normal not too heavy metal. It features Abbath formerly the vocalist from Immortal, so his vox haven’t changed much. It’s cool and will be a welcome addition to the Mosh Pit.

I Killed The Prom Queen
Music For the Recently Deceased
Metal Blade
41:54 -11 Tracks
Death metal-esque metal core. It’s intense heavy, melodic, with abrasive vocals… Produced and all that by Fredrik Nordstrom, Swedish king of production melodic death metal albums. That said, you know it sounds great and crisp. Because it’s a bit heavier than normal metalcore and well, I just have a feeling that it’s better than a lot of the other melodic death metalcore out there, you will hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Ill Nino
The Undercover Sessions EP
Cement Shoes

Jon Oliva’s Pain
Mechanical Renderings
Locomotive
57:45 – 11 Tracks
Last time around, Savatage band-mates Jon Oliva and Cris Caffery came out with albums at the same time and Caffery’s album kicked Oliva’s all over the place. Now that Oliva has his own release out without something to compare this to… It kicks ass. Sounds a bit like old Savatage. Jon Oliva always had such a cool voice. This new release might as well be a new Savatage album. It sticks to that type of metal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Krokus

Hellraiser
Locomotive
56:01 – 14 Tracks
They still have the AC/DC-like sound, the same cheese they’ve been oozing out for years now. Straightforward cheesy hard rock. And really, it’s not bad, there aren’t a lot of bands doing this stuff anymore. But… is it for the Mosh Pit? Probably not.

Twelve Gauge Valentine

Shock Value
Solid State
31:38 – 11 Tracks
These guys sound a lot like a lot of the other bands on this label. Pretty heavy with some emo parts. Just your run of the mill metalcore. All in all though, they keep it pretty intense, although I can tell exactly the parts where the lil emo hot topic kids will do the shuffle dance karate moves. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit at least this week.

Zombeast
Zombeast Horror
High Records
32:34 – 11 Tracks
Mix a little punk with some Danzig sound-alike vocals and you have Zombeast. It has that almost “sounds like it’s through a phone” production. I think again, the Mosh Pit will pass.
