After a few weeks of not a whole lot of new stuff, we’re blasted with a lot of releases this week…
Revolting Cocks
Locked and Loaded
13th Planet
55:12 – 11 Tracks
I don’t really know much about the Revolting Cocks except that it’s a bunch of people including Jello Biafra, Al Jourgensen and Rick Neilsen from Cheap Trick. This is their “reunion” album of sorts, as they are going to tour with Ministry this year. You can definately hear the Al Jourgensen influence, mix in a bit of the Rob Zombie/White Zombie sound and you have this new album. It’s pretty raw and fun! It’s something a bit different than everything else out there and you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Sepultura
Dante XXI
SPV Records
39:03 – 15 Tracks
Finally! A new Sepultura album. No one really sounds just like them, and they have their classic sound. I think they’ll always have the shadow of Max looming over them, but now, this album is thrashin’, basic meat and potatoes Sepultura metal. Catchy riffs, Igor’s signaure tribalesque drumming, great growls from Derrick and of course not really any messing around. Just a bunch of fairly short, straight-to-the-point tracks here. Of course you’ll hear this on the Pit.
The Ocean
Aeolian
Metal Blade Records
52:59 – 10 Tracks
This album/band has the sludgey sound with some growls goin ong. The fact sheet with the cd says it’s recommended if you like Mastodon, Burst or Cult of Luna. It’s pretty heavy and aggressive, but not terribly speedy. It kind of mixes the doom sound with some grindcore, but throws in some great meaty riffage! This is the kind of stuff I’m not good at writing about… can you tell? oh wait, I’m not good at writing any of this stuff at all! It’s pretty good, and again, it’s nice that it’s not another metalcore band!
Dismember
The God That Never Was
Candlelight
35:33 – 11 Tracks
At the very first listen, I’d have to say this sounds a bit like Napalm Death. It’s got some great guitar going on, and it has a bit of a Six Feet Under / Cannibal Corpse feel to it as well. Nothing groundbreaking on here, but it’s a solid release from these guys and you’ll hear it on the Pit.
Benedictum
Uncreation
Locomotive Records
53:29 – 11 Tracks
This is one of those “chick singer” bands. haha. Actually it’s a good solid power/thrash band with a female lead singer. Has a bit of the heavier Judas Priest sound for the music and heck, she kind of sounds like Rob Halford a bit to boot! Again with a lot of stuff out these days, nothing ground breaking, but it’s got good production, great playing and it’s not metalcore! You’ll hear this on the Pit!!
Boysetsfire
Cliffs Notes Of Boysetsfire EP
24:20 – 7 Tracks
This is an EP to create awareness of this band by recapping some of their songs from 3 albums. Uh…. yeah… with a name like Boysetsfire, I just don’t think of METAL. If I were a solid rock station, I might LOVE this. As a metal show dude, it’s my duty to try and filter this out so you don’t have to hear this alongside Slayer, In Flames and Kataklysm! Sorrrry Boysetsfire!!
Agnostic Front
Live at CBGB’s
Nuclear Blast
54:25 – 21 Tracks
Yup, it’s Agnostic Front. New album last year, live album/DVD this year! What can you say… it’s Agnostic Front with the goofy lead vocals and it’s live. Production/mixing sounds good and clean, so it’s not some bootleg quality… but yet still raw sounding as you’d expect anything from Agnostic Front to sound. You’ll probably hear this on the pit.. the songs are short!!
Here’s one from late in the mail…
Nebula
Apollo
Liquor and Poker
38:07 – 14 tracks
Again… nothing groundbreaking on this release, just another new solid album from stoner rockers Nebula. And again, I can’t really say much more about it, as I’m a sucky writer. If you like Nebula, and that vein of stoner metal, this will totally fit the bill.
Other releases we’re waiting in the mail for that are supposed to “add” this week are…
Facedowninshit, Unearthly Trance, Glenn Tipton
