Back To Base
Suburban Noize
43:06 – 13 Tracks
The title says it all. While it is sort of urban and poppy in some parts, it does get going and rock in others. I saw these guys live a few years ago, and was not happy, but someone (the book) said they’d be good, and they were! So I’ll give these guys a chance from now on. Another reason to check out a band live if you have any doubts about them, or are on the fence. This CD is alright, you may hear it on the Mosh Pit.

Kampfar
Kvass
Napalm
46:00 – 6 Tracks
Norwegian black metal. They follow the line of a typical scandanavian black metal sound. Nothing bad here, just a plodding along a-okay black metal sound. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit, as there isn’t much traditional black metal out these days!

Satyricon
Now, Diabolical
Century Media
48:00 – 9 Tracks
Contrasting to the Kampfar above, this is more along the new wave of black metal, not as creepy scary, better production, etc. Again, it’s all Satyr with a drummer. It isn’t terribly complex, just good ol meat and potatoes black metal. It’s got pretty good sound, and still sounds evil enough to be “cool.” You will hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Nights Like These
The Faithless
Victory
26:41 – 11 Tracks
At first listen, it’s a chaotic hardcore-ish Bongzilla-ey sound. It has a bit of that machine-gun metalcore sun with some pinch harmonic stuff on guitars to break up the monotony. It will then lighten up into some more plodding breaks, where an emo band would normally start their sing-along. Not these guys, growls all the way! It’s alright, I personally don’t care for it much, but I think it deserves some airplay on the ‘Pit!

Dragonforce
Inhuman Rampage
Roadrunner
56:08 – 8 Tracks
Newest release from these veteran Power-Prog-metallers is on Roadrunner Records. Bash Roadrunner all you want, but they seem to be the trendsetters lately. I have a feeling this release will increase awareness for power-prog metal and it’ll be one of the next big popular metal-genres. This album is all Dragonforce, fast-paced sing-aloney metal, quick drums and guitar works and fills. If you are a fan of prog-power metal, you’ll like this, and if you aren’t maybe this is the chance you should take to get started! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Thine Eyes Bleed
In The Wake of Separation
The End
Hey, go figure, a band is on a big tour (Thine Eyes Bleed on the Slayer tour) and their label decides to re-issue their 2005 album. I guess I could think of worse things. I liked this CD on the first release. This version has a bonus track. It’s heavy, in your face, and does not fuck around one bit. It’s not really metal-core, it’s just plain ol balls out metal. Tom Araya’s little brother is the bass player, and he should be proud. They should fit well on the Slayer tour. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

New stuff this week 5/29/06

It’s a bit of a slow week due to the holiday, so there’s only three new things to review this week…

Eidolon
The Parallel Otherworld
InsideOut
68:01 – 10 Tracks
Of course you may know this bad as the band that the new guys in Megadeth are from. They are a quality power metal band. There’s some crazy guitar playing on here. The vocals are a bit like Judas Priest. A good solid release, and as I am not a thesaurus, I’ll just say the same thing I say about a lot of stuff… nothing really groundbreaking here. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Celtic Frost
Monotheist
Century Media
68:22 – 11 Tracks
I have to be honest… I don’t know much about Celtic Frost, just that they are metal pioneers, and I started to get into metal after their heyday. So, they have a new album. It’s pretty good. It does sound “classic” and that’s what I would expect from a band that’s been around as long as these guys. Why change, right? It stays heavy, raw and in your face and doomy as well. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Skinless

Trample The Weak, Hurdle The Dead
Relapse
36:42 – 8 Tracks
Brutal death metal! I’ve liked Skinless since seeing them at Milwaukee Metalfest a few years ago. The thing I did like about them, was the singer wasn’t just a cookie monster guy that would just stand there and growl, he was more like a hardcore kinda guy. Well, he is not in the band, but the music is still brutal and that’s what’s important. The new vocals sound just fine too. The production is a little raw, but it doesn’t take away from anything. It’s good solid brutal death metal! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

New stuff this week 5/22/06

Dissection
Reinkaos
The End
43:04 – 11 Tracks
It’s been 11 years since we’ve heard from these guys. This new album sounds crisp, well put together and a no-nonsense black/melodic black metal album. It’s not crazy intense like a Dimmu Borgir, but it’s more like a Dark Tranquillity or At the Gates. This is great stuff, and you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Cataract
Kingdom
Metal Blade
41:26 – 11 Tracks
Mike and I both liked the last Cataract album. At the time, they were doing something that wasn’t so common… metal with a hardcore edge and some great musicianship. Nowadays, metalcore is the norm, but these guys stand out. This is thrashy, aggressive, and makes you want to stomp around and break stuff. It has some raw production, where it sounds a little boomy in parts, but I think that adds to the affect. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Speed Kill Hate
Acts of Insanity
Escapi
36:13 – 9 Tracks
A lot of chatter about these guys online and around here and there. “Featuring members of Overkill” is all you hear, so you figure it will sound like them a bit, right? Well, it does a little bit. More shouty/growly vocals, but a straight-ahead thrashy sound backs it up. You will hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Threat Signal
Sampler
Nuclear Blast
7:25 – 2 Tracks
They got the whole Meshuggah thing going on. Throw in some of the clean vocals from Fear Factory along with a bunch of the Fear Factory sound, and you have these guys. It IS produced by Chrisitan Olde Wolbers from Fear Factory, so that explains that part of it.

Spheric Universe Experience
Mental Torments
Nightmare
69:09 – 9 Tracks
This came with the Pyramaze CD, and is French Prog-Power metal. They have well put together songs, with some technical chops, keyboards, clean vox, and not singing about dragons and stuff. If you like Fates Warning, Dream Theater, and that sort, you’d really be into this band. You may hear this on the Mosh Pit!
