New Stuff This Week… 2/23/15

Lords of the Trident
Frostburn
Killer Metal (Local)
Catchy metal, over the top vocals, great guitars, a bit of a thrashy power metal feel… and best yet, they’re from Madison!  This is serious metal, but you can tell and just knowing the guys, they have fun doing it too!

The Agonist
Eye of Providence
Century Media
They were great female fronted melodic death before, lost their singer to Arch Enemy, then carried on with a new female vocalist… music is just as great, vocals are just as great… and a great new release.

Halestorm
“Apocalyptic” & “Mayhem” (singles)
Atlantic
Doin what they do well… female fronted hard rock… “Mayhem” is a good hard rockin/metal track.  “Apocalyptic” reminds me of a country song… eeehh..

Torche
Restarter
Relapse
Noisy grungy stoner metal.

Saxon
The Saxon Chronicles (Rock’n’Roll Gypsies 1989 Live)
UDR
Live show from 1989…. probably more close to their hard rockin’ 80’s pre-grunge peak.  This might be something more for a Saxon fan… Sounds good, production is good… but it is 80’s-ish.

All That Remains
The Order Of Things
Razor And Tie
Catchy hardcore metal core type stuff.  They’ve been around for sometime… This album has a metal good edge to it and pretty catchy with brutal stuff too. There’s also some just plain ol melodic hard rock stuff too.

Ashes In Vein
Ashes In Vein (EP)
Pavement Music
Melodic death metal.  Good mix of a pinch of a black metal sound and some proggy death metal. Clean vox and Growly vox.

Skogen
Vittra
Nordvis Produktion
Doomy melodic black metal.

An Autumn For Crippled Children
The Long Goodbye
Wickerman Recordings
Melodic atmospheric black metal

RITI OCCULTI
Riti Occulti
Nordavind Records
Sludgey, laid back stoner black metal, with post-metal tendencies and some creepy keyboard giving it some horror-like theme.

TERROR EMPIRE
The Empire Strikes Black
Nordavind Records
Technical Death Metal.  Fast, brutal, catchy and all that good extreme metal stuff.

Crimson Wind
Last Poetry Line
Pitch Black Records
Epic proggy metal.  The music is pretty heavy, but the vocals are just a bit too clean/operatic… almost like a Hansi from Blind Guardian but without many dynamics.

Izah
Sistere
Nordvis Produktion
Long doomy post-metalish black metal.  Some decent death metal stuff mixed in, but the looonnng songs with so much going on, and slow plodding riffage…meh.

Vassafor / Temple Nightside
Call of the Maelstrom – split LP
Iron Bonehead
Vassafor has terrible production… hard to get over… otherwise it’s some classic black metal.  Same goes for Temple Nightside

DR. LIVING DEAD!
Crush The Sublime Gods
Century Media
Classic thrash, a bit like some old Anthrax with maybe a pinch of a punk sound.

Steve Rothery
The Ghosts of Pripyat
InsideOut
Marillion guitarist with some slower melodic rock stuff. (sorry not for the Mosh Pit!)

Seven Year Storm (Sean Lang Drummer)
Aion I (EP)
Self Release
Catchy standard metal instrumental stuff.

Them County Bastardz
Sick Daze
Smokehouse Records (Asher Media)
A bit of southern metal with a little bit of a Rob Zombie vibe.

Below the Sun
Envoy
Temple of Torturous
Melodic doom post-metal type stuff.

Gamma Pulse
Dead But Dreaming
Genre: Metal
Label: Bullet Tooth
Metalcore with some brutal djenty dubstep going on.  Interesting to hear this in metal… suprised it’s taken this long actually.  Oh, then you get the singy mallcore chorus too.  Hmmm… probably not for the mosh pit.

Necrowretch
With Serpents Scourge
Century Media
A throw back to some old school black metal, but with good production..  Cold, sick, evil brutal sound, but with some melody in the guitar too.  Great stuff.

REVOLUTION SAINTS
Revolution Saints
Frontiers Music srl
Super Group featuring Jack Blades, Deen Castronovo and Doug Aldrich.  Sounds like a mix of their 70’s/80’s projects and actually kind of cool to hear.  There just aren’t songs like this out there anymore.  Yeah they do sound more like something that would have come from the 80’s/90’s, but who cares…  Probably not great for the Mosh Pit though… I sure with a classic rock station would pick this stuff up.

GOAT SEMEN
Ego Svm Satana (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Well, with a band name like Goat Semen, I wasn’t expecting any pussy sounding metal.  They are just fast, brutal pissed of raw black/death metal.  Production isn’t too bad. These guys aren’t happy about something.

Prophasis
Boundaries
Imminence Records
A djenty, Meshuggah-like sounding band.  But vocally, there are screams and growls, music seems a bit more brutal, a phat low end

Godless Angel
Harvester of Shadows
Inverse Records
Heavy thrashy standard metal type stuff

POUND OF FLESH
PILLS
New Ocean Media
This is more electronic music… sounds a bit like a Nine Inch Nails type thing.

Ithaqua
Initiation To Obscure Mysteries TAPE
Iron Bonehead
Decent classic black metal.  A bit more melodic than your typical blast beat shriek fest.

Acherontas
Ma IoN (Formulas Of Reptilian Unification)
W.T.C.Productions
A bit of a fast brutal black metal with some evil stuff going on, a little bit of an “epic” feel.

Swarþ
Veneficivm 7″ EP
Iron Bonehead
Noisy drony deathy black metal.

Devathorn
Vritra
W.T.C.Productions
Catchy brutal metal, maybe similar to Behemoth or the like.  Blackened thrashy stuff.

Pombagira
Flesh Throne Press
Svart Records
Melodic post-metal doomy yawnnnnn.

IN OTHER CLIMES (from France)
Leftover
Label: BASTARDIZED RECORDINGS (Against PR)
Hardcore metal… neat how this genre has now made it overseas and coming back.. Good stuff, catchy, thrashy..

OPHIDIAN COIL
Denial | Will | Becoming
Obscure Abhorrence Productions
Serbian blackened thrash.  Brutal, raw, but with good production.

NIGHT FALLS LAST
Deathwalker
Self-released
Heavy thrash from Austria.

SABOTER
SABOTER
WITCHES BREW
Old school thrashy metal

Nightwish
Élan (single)
Label: Nuclear Blast Records
It’s Nightwish, it sounds like Nightwish… aren’t they just their own genre by now?

INFERNAL EXECRATOR
AD INFINITUM SATANIC ADHERENT
Dunkelheit Produktionen
Blackened death/thrash metal from Singapore.  This is heavy, fast, catchy evil stuff.  This is actually more like the kind of Black metal I enjoy… intense, thrashy, good production, a wall of metal assaulting me.  🙂
