New Stuff This Week… 1/25/16

Megadeth
Dystopia
UME
What can I say… it’s new Megadeth, new drummer, new guitarist, still the Daves remain.  This has a good edge, the vocals are not trying too hard to sound like the old days, a good harsh lower sound which seems to fit what Mustaine can do these days and it works well with the music, which seems more edgy, thrashy and still melodic and not “sell outie”.  Good stuff.

Toothgrinder
Nocturnal Masquerade
Spinefarm
Melodic metalcore-ish I guess.  It’s got some melodic prog metal stuff going on in parts, other parts seem like straightforward screamy growly metal core.  Pretty cool interesting stuff that isn’t boring.

Serenity
Codex Alanticus
Napalm Records
An epic symphonic metal… decent heaviness, clean vox, these guys have been around a while, so they’re not going to mess with their formula too much.  Decent stuff overall.

Billion Dollar Babies
Chemical God
Metalville Records
A more “accessible” solid rock type of metal.  Catchy cool stuff, polished sound with a bit of electronic hits and stuff.

Avantasia
Ghostlights
Label: Nuclear Blast Records
This kicked off on the intro track, I thought I was listening to a Meatloaf album.  (Not that there’s anything wrong with that).  But, continuing on, this is some melodic hard rocking symphonic power metal type stuff… Some parts get a little bit more “metal”  but this seems a lot more AOR than metal to me.  still pretty cool and epic though.

Baphomet’s Blood
In Satan We Trust LP
Iron Bonehead
Blackened thrashy metal. There’s some melodic stuff, maybe a pinch of a Motorhead loud-in-your-face thing happening.

Exumer
The Raging Tides
Metal Blade Records
This some serious old school classic sounding thrash.  Great stuff.  Riffage galore.  Kind of an older classic

IRON JAWED GURU
Mata Hari
Grimoire Records
This is some pretty sweet instrumental stoner metal.  Maybe along the lines more of a Mastodon.  Good grooves, a bit proggy.  Good stuff.

Titaan
Kadingir
ATMF
Classic brutal black metal.  Blast beats, cold guitars, screamy and growly vox.

Fall
The Insatiable Weakness
Self-Released
Melodic metal with keyboards and oh, I guess it could be melodic death, as there are growly things happening too.  Seems a bit more like a metalcore with the style of the clean vocals.  As I get deeper into the album, the heavier growly stuff gets stronger and makes the clean vox not seem so bad. Pretty cool stuff actually…and to have something of this genre out of Texas makes it better!?  yeah.

Hexvessel
When We Are Death
Century Media
A big 70’s psychedelic throwback

Forndom
Dauðra Dura
Nordvis Produktion
Doomy ambient depression.  Not going to qualify this one as metal… huh.

PROLL GUNS
Horseflesh BBQ
Label: Nrt-Records
Hard rockin’ metal… I’d say they’d compare to Clutch with energy and catchiness… maybe a bit heavier in parts… 3 song EP has a good driving groove and edge too.

A THOUSAND SUFFERINGS
Burden
Satanath Records
Kind of a creepy doom metal

Enzo and the Glory Ensemble
In the Name of The Father
Label: Underground Symphony
Always fun to get a symphonic prog metal band from Italy.   you know it’s going to be a bit cheesey, but still epic and cool.  This one has vocals that are in a lower register… I’m used to that over the top screamy singing.  This seems to have a bit more emotion vocally because of it.  Judging by the vocals and some other reading… this is a full on Christian metal thing with a lot of guest musicians… The guest musicians include Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth), Kobi Farhi (Orphaned Land), Ralph Scheepers (Primal Fear), Mark Zonder (Fates Warning & Warlord ), Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery),  Brian Ashland (Shadow Gallery), Amulyn (Whispers From Heaven) and Nicholas Leptos (Warlord).

Justice Theory
Necessary Evil (single)
Inverse
Great melodic thrash with a throwback to classic thrash, but with a modern feel.  While they are Finnish, this sounds like that new wave of american thrash stuff.  Me want more!

Band name: JACOB LIZOTTE
Title: FOR THE FALLEN ONES
Label: SELF RELEASED
Kinda thrashy, and kinda just your standard classic metal too.

Band: Jack
Album: Neurozis
Label: Give Praise records
Grindy brutal thrashy death metal.

AVITAS
Pioneers
Bud Metal Records
classic old school sounding black metal.  cold, melodic and creepy.

WHEEL IN THE SKY
Heading For The Night
Label: The Sign Records
A guitary hard rock type thing… reminds me a little bit of The Cult.

INEDIA
ARITMIA WASTELAND
Sleazy Rider
Melodic hard rock

MR. RIOT
SAME OLD TOWN
Sleazy Rider
More hard rock… a little raw and punky… otherwise, there’s some sort of 90’s throwback… a fun hard rockin’ thing.

ROTTING CHRIST
TRIARCHY OF THE LOST LOVERS
SLeaszy Rider
Reissue of their 1996 album.  sounds good… sounded good back then too.

Band: Ildverden
Album: Temnich Chorna Jde Za Mnoyu
Label: Satanath records
Ukrainian black metal a bit of melody, cold classic black metal feel.  Long songs…   and a bonus cover of The Wolfpack from Satyricon!

HÄLLAS
Hällas
Label: The Sign Records
Some cool sabbath-like stoner metal on this 4 song EP.

Band: Exterminas
Album: Dichotomy
Label: Satanath records
Black metal but with a bit more of a death metal thing.  Still has that cold dark black metal feel, but not as much as a super old school thing.  I guess a more modern raw melodic black metal is what’s going on.

DEATHRAID
Submit to the Will of Chaos
Iron Tyrant
A little thrashy, mostly deathy decent stuff.

SENESCENCE
Endoomed
Label: Self-Released
Doomy metal, but with a bit of a melodic almost proggy feel in parts.  (3 long songs)
