After their last album… it’s hard to get too much worse.  This one still has a classic In Flames feeling, is definitely heavier and they still seem to be more of a hard rock/alt metal band nowadays though.  This one is a decent listen.

Black Sabbath

EXCEL
The Joke’s On You [remaster]

Classic thrash.  melodic catchy, great stuff and a sort of forgotten band/album.  This was a staple of my metal show in college in the early 90’s and there’s a cover of “Message in a Bottle” on here too!

A bit melodic, maybe gothy.  Vox seem a bit more, like pop/goth/alternative.  Music is a little bit of a standard metal type thing.

Blackened
Truth Behind Destruction
Label: Witches Brew
They have the whole classic thrash thing going on, sounds like they’re nailing that old trading tape sound from the 80’s.  As a matter of fact, I had to make sure this wasn’t some reallly underground band re-issuing their demo tape from the 80’s.  But nope, it’s new and raw.

UBUREN
Fra Doden Fodes Liv
Via Nocturna Records
This is some raw black metal.  A bit in your face and brutal yet it still has that classic black metal melody too

Callidice

Melodic death metal.  What can I say, it’s got melody and it’s got death.  good stuff.

Black metal with a bit of a doomy melodic post metal thing going on too.

MARIANNE TOILET AND THE RUNS

Sex comedy rock type stuff.  Not quite metal musically, but it is soooo “metal”

Band: TÁLESIEN

A lot of buzz around this band.  More melodic death, and their xylo synth (sythned up xylophone)  Cool stuff.  Heavy stuff, djent stuff, clean vox and kind of a proggy math thing going on too.

Vader
The Empire

First album in a couple years.  They still have that “Slayered” up death metal type sound.  Quick brutal and headbaning songs.  Great stuff.

Some of this is doom, a bit death metal.  Some catchy stoner metal type stuff too.

Protokult
Oy Kanada (single)
Self-Release
Operatic female vox, bouncy melodic death with a folk metal feeling.  Interesting stuff.

The Chronicles of Israfel
A Trillion Lights, Tome II
BOH Records
Melodic death… or almost some sort of metalcore.  The music has brutality, melodic stuff, but the clean vox lean a bit to the modern metalcore.  We could probably call this proggy melodic death too, because it kind of switches up a bunch too.  Good stuff.

The Neal Morse Band
The Similitude of a Dream
Radiant
A lot of self induced hype from the band and well, a lot of early reviews saying the same.  This is really a prog rock/hard/rock bordering on prog metal in parts masterpiece.  Comparable to Spock’s Beard’s Snow.  A lot of great prog and signature Neal Morse stuff going on in this 2 disc concept album.  All band members contributing greatly.  Album of their careers (as they say)?  I dunno.  it’s awesome for a fanboy like me.  Maybe a few more listens.  Great stuff, and maybe a track or two are worthy of some Mosh Pit play.
