New Stuff This Week… 2/9/15

At The Hollow
What I Hold Most Dear
Spinefarm
Kind of a melodic laid back prog rock type thing

Byzantine
“A Curious Lot” (Single)
WV Snakepit
Catchy hard rockin’ metal with a heavier maybe slight techy prog edge to it.  (not the techy djent prog edge, like real prog where stuff gets mixed up a bit and not just plain ol standard beats and stuff.)  can’t wait to hear more!

Hate
Crusade Zero
Napalm Records
Hate was below my radar for a long time til I saw them live a few years ago… such an awesome show and, well, turns out they’re an awesome band… This new release is some classic death metal sound with some great grooves and production… and yeah, brutal too without having to be all on blast beats.

Bonz
Broken Silence
Pavement Music
Whoa, new release from Bonz!  (you know, from Stuck Mojo?)  Yeah… one of the pioneers of the rap metal vocal type thing. He still sounds the same, the rap stuff with a bit of metal edge to it too.  While, it’s not quite the same without Rich Ward, but it’s still some great metal with a throwback feel too.

Four Trips Agead
Love And Rebelion (EP)
505 Records
Some melodic hard rock from NYC, vocals remind me a little bit of some old Galactic Cowboys… but the rest is just some standard hard rock type stuff.

Lykaion
Heavy Lullabies
Inverse Records.
Some alt-metal, hard rock, proggy power metal from Italy.  Hard to really put a label on this one.  It’s got some elements from power metal, prog, maybe some alternative, classic hard rock and some basic thrashy stuff too.

Wömit Angel
Maggotmouth
Inverse
Some fast black metal/thrash metal.  This is just a 3 song EP with some short songs, but pretty cool aggressive stuff that actually has some clean production.

Mourning Mist
Mourning Mist CD
Forever Plagued
Black metal at its core… it’s got lots of prog and experimental, orchestral type stuff going on.  This is pretty unique, but you probably need to have a bit of an open mind too.  Basic description, prog black metal rock.

Demoncy
Joined in Darkness CD
Forever Plagued
Basic blackened death metal… good groove, a bit of a grindy guitar sound.

Gehennah
Metal Police
Metal Blade Records
Trashy punked up thrashy stuff with attitude.  Catchy guitar, basic hardcore sound with some punk thrown in there.

ADRENALINE MOB
Dearly Departed
Century Media
Mostly a covers album with some other tracks from their last album and other sessions… great covers though.  Snorton’ Whiskey, Devil Went Down to Georgia, Black Sabbath and Tie Your Mother Down… great versions of the covers and the unreleased and acoustic stuff is cool too.

PRIMITIVE MAN
Home Is Where The Hatred Is
Relapse Records
Grindy Sludgey death metal

BLOODSCRIBE
Prologue To The Apocalypse
Gore House Productions (full blast PR)
Full on brutal death metal

CALL OF THE VOID
Cold Hands (Radio Promo)
Relapse Records
Extreme hardcore with some grindy stuff and a groove too…

ZOAX
Is Everybody Listening?
Century Media
A catchy post-hardcore almost pop-metal sounding thing.  It’s catchy, rockin, but just has some sort of commercial post metalcore type feel to it.

Generichrist
Taste Of Death
Horror Pain Gore Death
Thrashy death metal… cool riffs, catchy heavy stuff and a fun, sick sense of humor band too.

Ahamkara
The Embers Of The Stars
Nordvis / Bindrune
Melodic Black metal, 4 long songs, pretty depressing, but heavy in some parts too.

DWELL (Denmark)
Vermin and Ashes (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Doomy death metal, sounds good, brutal, dark, heavy.

MARDUK
Frontschwein
Century Media
Marduk has never been known for fucking around.  This is no different!  Heavy, thrashy blackened death metal, just makes you want to headbang and hold up invisible oranges!

Arbitrator
Indoctrination of Sacrilege
Self Released (Asher)
Release: 13 February 2015
Dirk Verberuen sits in on drums for this Canadian melodic death band. Pretty much a one man project, this has some death metal vox, piano and orchestral stuff going on along with the heavy stuff to make it a well rounded album with some great production too.

FRANKENSTEIN ROOSTER
The Nerdvrotic Sounds’ Escape
Scarlet Records
Prog metal, mostly instrumental, very guitar based… lots of noodling, some spoken word type stuff… reminds me a bit of Steve Vai stuff.

Amber Sea
Infantile Vision
Famined Records
This is some sort of brutal core/math metal stuff.  Heavy brutal death metal stuff, then some changeups and catchy stuff too.

MONOLITH
Against The Wall Of Forever
Funeral Noise Records
Stoner thrash metal… cool groove, melodies and a heavy feel.

Stone Circle
Stone Circle
Self-released / distribution by Terrorizer Magazine
Description says:  “For fans of: Katatonia, Opeth, Amorphis & Textures”   Yeah it fits along those lines… more melodic proggy hard rock than anything really getting too brutal.  It does get heavier in parts though.  Pretty cool stuff.

Apoapsis
Balance EP
Self Released (Email)
Sort of a melodic death metal thing.  Clean vox, screamy vox, catchy melodic riffs and brutal stuff too

Diesel King (from UK)
Concrete Burial
Label: When Planets Collide
Big sludgey stoner metal sound, but actually pretty catchy and not all boring sludge.

Zaria (from Slovenia)
Po poti življenja
Label: Self-Released
Female fronted folky power metal, this actually gets pretty heavy and sort of thrashy in parts… but really does keep with the folk metal feel too.

EXHUMED
Gore Metal: A Necrospective (NA Promo)
Relapse Records
A reissue of Exhumed first album… sounds great, and a new excuse to play it!

RWAKE
Xenoglossalgia: The Last Stage of Awareness
Relapse Records
Basically dooomy and sludgey slower blackened death metal… actually has a few shorter tracks

New Stuff This Week… 2/2/15

Europe
“War Of Kings” (single)
UDR
While just a single and not really being familiar with much Europe ouside of their hits, this is a pretty decent standard metal song reminiscent of maybe something Dio would have put out.  Just a pretty good classic metal release. It’s a shame there just aren’t a whole lot of fans out there for this type of stuff anymore. Full album out in March

Taake
Stridens Hus
Candlelight/Dark Essence
Classic melodic black metal stuff going on.  These guys have been around for quite some time

Wolfheart
Winterborn
Spinefarm
Great melodic death, some brutal aggressive stuff going on, catchy guitar, yet also with a bit of a black metal vibe too.

Seek Irony
Tech N’ Roll
Evil Snail Recordings
Basically a commercial-accessible hard rock thing with catchy licks and clean vox. (a little nickelback-like) Some electronic stuff going on too, maybe a Static-X lite (but with the clean vox)

Cancer Bats
True Zero – radio single
Metal Blade Records
10 March 2015
Punky edged standard metal with some catch riffs and stuff.

Thulcandra
Ascension Lost
Napalm Records
Great melodic black metal/death metal from Germany.  It’s been 4 years since their last album… seems like they’ve honed their skills pretty well in that time.  Great melodic parts, and even better darker fast intense black metal parts.  Great guitar tones and drumming… with just the right amount of abrasiveness in the vocals.  This is probably my pick of the week!

Bling Guardian (Single Posted)
Beyond The Red Mirror
Nuclear Blast USA
As cheesy as Blind Guardian seems on the surface, they really are one of the best proggy power metal bands, well, ever.  They manage to keep it all heavy, while still having the symphonic and power metal things going on too.

Yesterday’s Saints
Generation of Vipers
Draconum Recordings
Starts off as some pretty sweet melodic death metal then transitions into some power metal.  Seems like this is their thing… melodic deathy power metal… I can’t say I’ve really heard many bands do it quite like this, and with good production too.  Good stuff.

HUETENSIL
KING
Mosh Pit.
Decent classic metal type stuff.

Minutian
Inwards
Inverse
A basic melodic proggy metal/hard rock type thing.

Callisto
Secret Youth
Svart Records
Melodic stoner doomy prog rock

Black Cilice
Mysteries LP
Iron Bonehead
Sigh.  Sounds like it was recorded on a 1980’s fisher price kid’s cassette deck, then mastered on a dictation machine.  WTF.  No. Sorry, I can’t get past shitty production, I don’t care if it’s a Dream Theater/Soilwork/Emerson Lake and Palmer supergroup concert dedicated to yours truly.  No thanks.

Hic Iacet
The Cosmic Trance Into the Void LP
Iron Bonehead
30 January 2015

DEAD HAPPY:
EP = “Banana God”
RECORD LABEL = Coffee Jingle Records
Reminds me a bit of a more metal Mindless Self Indulgence.  This is

Cryptic Hymn
Revel In Disgust (single)
Self- Release (Asher)
Just a single dammit… this is some cool catchy thrashy melodic death metal.

CARNATION (from Belgium)
Cemetery Of The Insane
Final Gate Records (Against PR)
Classic Brutal death metal, great sound and just a wall of brutal catchy metal coming at you.

AGOS (from Greece)
Irkalla Transcendence
Label: III DAMNATION Productions
Black/death metal. Noisy brutal wall of sludgy death metal… Pretty decent.

Shadowspawn
Ashes Of Sorrow CD
(out on 2/3/2015)
Melodic death metal, catchy thrashy stuff, it’s a solid release for this genre and good stuff.

Abscession (from Sweden)
Grave Offerings
Final Gate Records
Mainly death metal, a bit down tempo with a little pinch of a black metal tone (in the guitars)

Solefald
World Metal. Kosmopolis Sud
Indie Recordings
Folk metal with some proggy stuff going on

WINTERAGE (from Italy)
THE HARMONIC PASSAGE
Label: Nadir Music (Against PR)
Symphonic power metal with some folky stuff going on

GAME OVER
For Humanity (Re-Release)
Scarlet Records
Cool thrashy stuff… a reissue from their 2012 album.

ALIEN DEVIANT CIRCUS (from France)
Ananta Abhâva
Label: Necrocosm Productions
Industrial Black Metal, a bit noisy and post-metal-ish… some reallllly long songs too.  eh.

DIAPSIQUIR (from France)
L.S.D
Label: Necrocosm
Industrial-ish Doomy death metal

D.A.M. (from Brazil)
The Awakening
Self.Released
Release Date: 11 December 2014
Not to be confused with the british thrash band from the 90’s.  This is melodic death from Brazil.  Some proggy power metal stuff going on musically, the vocals are almost black metal style abrasive, but also going into some clean vox too.

Bleeding Eyes (from Italy)
Gammy
Label: Go Down Records
Some dooomy sludgey stuff with oh, maybe a little metalcore going on too?

New Stuff This Week… 1/26/15

Level 10
Chapter One
Frontier
Russell Allen singing in yet another project!  (the man has a family to feed!)  This is more of a straightforward euro power metal thing with some guys from Primal Fear.  So basically something inbetween Adrenaline Mob (Straighthead hard rock) and Symphony X (full on prog metal).  Russell Allen is one of my favorite metal/rock vocalists, so I’m digging this.

Venom
From The Very Depths
Spinefarm
From a band that was at the forefront of true metal waaaay back when, they are still going strong and delivering the goods.  Heavy metal with some groove going on and a pinch of death metal.

The Wild Beyond
The Wild Beyond
Ultra Mega Sound
Melodic commercial hard rock type stuff. Reminds me a little bit of The Cult just a little bit (maybe a bit more heavy).

Napalm Death
Apex Predator
Century Media Records
Grindy death goodness as Napalm Death has pioneered

Diablo Blvd   (Single)
Follow The Dead Lights
Nuclear Blast USA
Some standard mainstream-type rock.  Laid back catchy active rock type stuff.

Xthirt13n
Taste Of The Light
Metal Shop Records
It’s your Judas Priest style of classic metal. Hints of Queensryche and other proggy power metal going on.  Quality stuff and really a sub-genre you don’t hear a lot of “new” stuff from these days.  Not too full on prog, not too power metal, and not all growly deathy.  Just right in the wheelhouse of good classic metal.

Year of The Locust
Home
Phantom Records
Kind of a grungy modern hard rock thing

If These Trees Could Talk
Above the Earth, Below the Sky
Metal Blade Records
Chilled out reissue from 2009, kind of like the Opeth Damnation album, relaxed jammy post-metal type stuff.

If These Trees Could Talk
Red Forest
Metal Blade Records
Chilled out reissue from 2012, kind of like the Opeth Damnation album.

Cry Excess
Ambition Is The S***
Luxor Records
Fairly straightforward standard new metalcore.  Hard rockin’ stuff, clean sung chorus (but not all emo whiney)

Solanum / Epi-Demic
Passages To Lunacy Split CD
Horror Pain Gore Death Productions
Solanum is some basic groovin’ death metal with some catchy riffs.  Epi-Demic is some rawly produced old school heavy thrash, maybe a basic heavy old Exodus.

By The Patient
Gehenna
Lifeforce
Grindy melodic death metal

Ingested
The Architect Of Extinction
Century Media
Brutal death metal, with a bit of that brutal “core” feel.  Drums and the backend feel like a freight train rolling through.  Vocals are pissed off and aggressive.

Beardfish
+4626-Comfortzone
InsideOut Music
Cool old school yet modern prog rock.  Not really mosh pit material, but still cool stuff!

Nightingale
Retribution
InsideOut Music
Another album from Dan Swano’s band.  Prog rock/prog metal type stuff. Doesn’t ever get really heavy, just a cool melodic metal thing with some catchy grooves.  (would have made some great mid-90’s aor type stuff!)

Angelus Apatrida
Hidden Evolution
Century Media
Heavy catchy standard thrash metal from Spain.  Great riffs, just enough abrasiveness in the vocals to make it pissed off, but mixed in with the shouts make it a great homage to the bay area.

SORDIDE (from France)
La France a peur
Label: AVANTGARDE MUSIC (Against PR)
A down tempo black metal type thing with some “meh” production.  Yeah you can have some blast beats and cold guitars and melodic stuff too, but when it sounds like it’s coming through an old phone it just takes a lot away for me.

EXTINCTIONIST (from Germany)
PORTALS OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL INVASIONS
Rising Nemesis Records (Against PR)
Technical Brutal Death Metal with gurgly vocals, not much else I can say… it’s good stuff.

Eastfrisian Terror
EastfrisiaApokalypse
Rotten Roll Rex
Standard thrashy catchy death metal.

Tourniquet (from USA)
Onward to Freedom
Pathogenic Records (Tourniquet’s own label) (Against PR)
Christian thrash infused power metal band is back… some cool stuff here.

New Stuff This Week…1/19/15

MARILYN MANSON
The Pale Emperor
Loma Vista
No doubt about it, MM has made his place in the music world, with his albums and especially his live shows… he has a sound that’s all his own too.  This album is right up there with the MM sound, maybe a bit more laid back and melodic…

VOICES
London
Candlelight
Featuring former members of Akerkocke, it’s quite varied, in some parts, its like a Volbeat, others it’s Opeth (death metal and melodic) and just kind of all over the place, but yet brutal and fresh too.

Night Demon
Curse of The Damned
Century Media Records
Just classic metal with big screamy vocals a bit of a thrashy sound, but still full on metal

Raised Fist
From The North
Epitaph Records
Catchy raw punked up hardcore metal, vocals almost seem rapped… sounds a lot like Snot actually.

Bullet
Storm Of Blades
Metalville Records
Classic metal (a la Judas Priest) with a big screamy voice, catchy riffs and stuff, actually maybe sounds a bit like Steel Panther too…

Panzer
Send Um All To Hell
Nuclear Blast USA
Catchy German thrashy metal

Sylosis
Dormant Heart

Thrashy death metal, almost a bit like Strapping Young Lad with how fast and in your face it can be.

Some classic metal with Kreator-like vocals and musical tendencies… pretty good stuff

Visigoth
The Revenant King
Metal Blade
Catchy power metal with a pinch of folk

Lord Dying
Poisoned Altars
Relapse Records
Sludgey metal, reminds me a bit of Crowbar, but with a bit more of a groove and catchiness… maybe Down meets Crowbar

Revolution Saints
“Turn Back Time” Single
Frontiers Music srl
Great catchy stuff with that late 80’s/90’s AOR thing going on:  Copy/paste from the bio info says it all… “Deen Castronovo (Journey, Ozzy Osbourne, Bad English), Jack Blades (Night Ranger, Damn Yankees, Shaw/Blades) and Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio) . Put these three rock titans together in a band and you have the exciting new hard rock/melodic rock supergroup REVOLUTION SAINTS.”

SIMUS
Vox Vult
Bakerteam Records
Heavy melodic metal, clean vox, a bit proggy, melodic guitars and some good chugga guitar too.

KERKER (from Germany)
A Dime For The Bleak Faces
Label: Nihilistische KlangKunst (Against PR)
Classic Black metal.  Cold drony guitars, abrasive growly creepy vocals.

EARTH AND PILLARS (from Italy)
Earth I
Label: AVANTGARDE MUSIC (Against PR)
Long drony go nowhere black metal sounding stuff.  I think I hear vocals, but they’re so low in the mix, you can’t really tell.

OBSESSÖR
Assassins of the Pentagram
Deathstrike Records
Fast quick classic thrash, with some death metal tendencies (vocals)… but then vocals also go up to some big time screams too.  Pretty cool stuff.

Cauldron of Hate
Emperor
Inverse
Great thrashy death metal.  Brutal stuff yet a bit catchy and definitely headbangy!  hah.

Thurisaz

Lucky Bastardz
Laid back and acoustic… melodic doomy stuff… a cool cover of Amorphis’ “My Kantele”

Satan’s Host
Pre-dating god Parts 1 & 2
Moribund
A bit of a melodic thrashy metal.  Clean creepy vocals, also shouty screams too. Music is proggy, yet thrashy and death metal-like in parts too.

Crack House
The Hits Just Keep On Coming
Horror Pain Gore Death
Brutal thrash

MELLOWTOY
Lies
Scarlet Records
Melodic Metal, feels like decent commercial “solid rock” type stuff.  Catchy, metalcore, almost nu-metal sounding.

SWEET & LYNCH
Only to Rise
Frontiers Music srl
Had a sampler last year and it was pretty decent.  You know, straightforward hard rock type stuff from Matthew Sweet and George Lynch.
