New stuff this week…. 7/27/09

Dangerous New Machine
3-Song
Unsigned
10:47 – 3 Tracks
Featuring a some guys from Fozzy (Billy Grey), Stuck Mojo (Rodney Beaubouef), Outshine (Jake Kitchen and Rodney) and Stereomud’s vocalist, Erik Rogers.   And it sounds a bit like all of these mentioned bands.   It’s pretty much a plain ol hard rock type thing though.  Fairly melodic and “solid-rocky”

Anaal Nathrakh
In The Constellation of The Black Widow
Candlelight
34:38  – 10 Tracks
I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz about these guys… you know, that it’s the best black metal release to come out this year… just complete raw old school black metal… and well, it’s raw and just crazy fast and out there.  Intense, scary, and really unlike anything out there right now.  This is the CD you want to put on for people if you want to show them how scary metal can be.   One might say it’s the Dragonforce of black metal… just so much going on!  I don’t mean that in a bad way… You know how d-force is just over the top on everything?  This is over the top of everything fast/black metal.   Awesome!

Angerpath
Forgotten World
Epitomite
37:58 – 7 Tracks
Some classic death metal going on here… From Poland!  We know that Poland puts out some pretty damn good metal… and while not on the same page as Behemoth or Vader, these guys have a good raw death metal thing going on .  Nothing groundbreaking, nothing bad.  Good meat and potatoes death metal.. and Poland has a lot of that, right?

He Is Legend
It Hates You
Tragic Hero
57:08 – 12 Tracks
Kind of an emo-core, but kind of metalcore.  The vocals pretty much stay “clean” the whole time… while I want to not like this, as it just has an emo vibe to it, it just doesn’t… It maintains some sort of cool hard rock metal thrashy thing in the music… just kind of catchy… it’s almost like catchy pop music metal… lots of stuff going on and fun to listen to.

Valkyrja
The Invocation of Demise
Metal Blade
43:52 – 9 Tracks
This is that sort of black/death metal that gives a true metal fan warm fuzzies.   Just dark, evil, fast, along the lines of Watain or Immortal.  Classic blast beats, black metal droning guitar riffs… evil abrasive vocals.  Just great classic Black metal!

Mind Key
Pulse For A Graveheart
Frontiers
58:12 – 10 Tracks
Mixing some of the 80’s/09’s Hard rock with Dream Theater, Evergrey and the like, these guys have a pretty good take on prog metal.  Music stays fairly heavy, yet still with some cool prog stuff, it does have some early Dream Theater / Symphony X type sound going on.  The Vocals are similar to Jorn Lande… great range and dynamic… not just all high notes.    As a whole it reminds me a bit of Andromeda or Ark.

Crash The System
The Crowning
Frontiers
38:35 – 13 Tracks
This takes more of the 80’s/90’s stuff as mentioned above and keeps more of it.  Vocals are a bit the same, but the music isn’t as heavy.  it’s a bit more euro-prog metal sounding…. without the keyboards, it’d be a bit like Whitesnake musically… you know, kind of like power ballad-like.

Machines of Grace
Machines of Grace
Winterfall
51:57 – 14 Tracks
Well, if Savatage won’t put out an album, why shouldn’t all of the members of the band have other projects outside of TSO and Savatage to keep them busy… This one features the drummer Jeff Plate and former Savatage frontman, Zak Stevens.  This is a pretty straightforward hard rock album… clean vox, solid backing band.

Blood Red Throne
Souls of Damnation
Earache
38:47 – 9 Tracks
Week of good black/death metal? This is great clean sounding classic brutal death metal.  It VERY much makes me want to stomp around and break things.  Great chugga chugga riffs, growly vocals, and more riffs and moshing!!   Has a great thrashy thing going on with the brutality.

New stuff this week…. 7/20/09

New stuff this week…. 7/20/09

Divine Heresy
Bringer of Plagues
Century Media
42:00 – 11 Tracks
This follows about the same as the last album… yeah, new singer, but still the same heavy fear-factory-esque music as their first album.  This new vocalist probably has more of a phil anselmo growl, but has a higher up singy voice… drumming is super fast and insane along with Dino’s monster riffs.   Great new addition to the new wave of american metal!

Hail of Bullets
Warsaw Rising EP
Metal Blade
28:33 – 6 Tracks
Kind of a brutal grindy version of old school metal.   Compared to Exhumed and Napalm Death, I can see a little of both, with maybe a bit of Motorhead just for the vocals…. in parts… otherwise, the vocals are like brutal Lemmy…

The Autumn Offering
Requiem
Victory
37:40 – 11 Tracks
Fairly catchy, hooky, melodic… great angry vocals, but then of course, keeps the “core” thing going with melodic clean sing-y choruses.   Music is otherwise brutal with big meaty breakdowns… nothing really new and exciting here, just a new collection of metalcore songs…

Full Scale Riot
Rise (EP)
Riot
20:21 – 5 Tracks
It starts off having me think it’s a mix of Biohazard and Slayer… then the words kick in, it’s a LOT more Biohazard and not so much Slayer.  ha   So yeah, for the most part, this is kind of old school Biohazard-like, but then some clean singy chorus are thrown in and take a way from it a little bit… overall though, it’s kind of cool to have a throwback sounding band like this.

Tenpoint
Northern Rock
Tenpoint
TPM
30:36 – 6 Tracks
Sounds like a decent hard rock band.  A little bit of a southern tinge to it, but really not too much.  Fits along the lines of those early 90’s bands with good melodic hard rock, with an almost Robert Plant-type voiced singer.  This is just something that’s not really for the Mosh Pit…

Cruel Hand
Prying Eyes
Bridge Nine
23:16 – 12 Tracks
Hey, this is almost like Biohazard above too…  but this is more just a good classic chugga chugga punk/hard core band.  Nothing really new here, but nothing bad either!

Death Before Dishonor
Better Ways To Die
Bridge Nine
24:22 – 11 Tracks
Another straightforward hardcore/punk band/album going on here.   These guys are from Boston and the songs are kind of like “anthemy”   The little bio writeup mentions bands like Rancid (punk edge), Dropkick Murphy’s (working class anthems), Hatebreed (hardcore attack) and Slayer (riffage).   And that sums it up pretty good!

Anaka
The Glorified Crusade
Godsend
47:38 – 11 Tracks
This is a straightforward hard rock/”solid rock” type of band.  Some heavy hard rock stuff, with catchy melodic vocals… occasionally there’s like a Hetfield moment, where the song is pretty much “metallica-like”  from the Load era.   Actually if I had to compare this whole album to something, yeah, one of the Load disks would do it….

August Burns Red
Constellations
SolidState
40:10 – 12 Tracks
Catchy metal/brutal core.  Fast heavy songs, good guitar work, freight train drumming… you know, the typical good brutalcore album!

Other Adds:  Bury Your Dead, Bigelf, We Were Gentlemen, Church of Misery, Never Got Caught, Five Finger Death Punch

New stuff this week…. 7/13/09

We Were Gentlemen
Living Hell
Century Media
37:31 – 10 Tracks
This is pretty much some heavier Hatebreed sounding stuff.   Similar as there’s a hardcore element, but with some good heavy metal stuff too… some breakdowns, and some singy metalcore parts… but really not many, I probably shouldn’t even mention it, but the first one caught me off guard.  It’s pretty good thrasy/hardcore stuff

Suffocation
Blood Oath
Nuclear Blast
37:07 – 10 Tracks
I always knew these guys were good… but I really learned to appreciate them after seeing them live in Madison a few months ago…. which I then followed up and read more about them and all that…. so it got me more excited for this release… a mid-tempo brutal death fest of metal… Awesome vocals, Solos, drum and bass work throughout…. it’s not overly blast beat-y… but it’s just so heavy and brutal it makes you want to just high step stomp through a mosh pit and roll some heads!

Church of Misery
Houses of the Unholy
Metal Blade
48:12 – 7 Tracks
Kind of a Sabbath brand of stoner metal going on here…. songs seem to be about murderers or serial killers… and the band is from Japan!   First time I’ve heard stoner/sabbath metal from Japan.  Long songs, but relatively interesting with some great guitar work.  This would definitely go better with beer  or something else! 😉

Moss
Tombs of the Blind Drugged
Metal Blade
40:28 – 4 Tracks
Mike and I don’t like to throw this term around lightly… but when a band or album comes along that we don’t care for….. we call it an Endurance Test… these four tracks just seem to move along very very slow and never seem to get anywhere… while we’re not fans of this stuff, I’m sure some are… and for those of you… You’ll actually have to call the radio show while we’re there and say you want to hear this for real!

Clutch
Strange Cousins From The West
Weathermaker
44:58 – 10 Tracks
A new modern-era classic Clutch album… I say “modern-era” because the last few albums have had a bit more of a bluesy feel to them.  Songs are catchy, fun to listen to, and the playing is just awesome as usual.   And actually some of this album is a bit of a throwback to their older sound mixed up with the newer bluesy style.   As always… nice and catchy as I mentioned.

Bigelf
“The Evils of Rock and Roll”  (single)
Custard
2 Tracks – 11:12
A big fat stoner metal sound… these guys were the late add to Dream Theater’s Prog. Nation tour.   It’s kind of got the King Krimson sound a bit with big fat keyboards, but mix that with some Sabbath or Deep Purple/Floyd and you’ll have some catchy meets 70’s prog rock!

Darkest Hour
The Eternal Return
Victory
34:55 – 10 Tracks
A good mix of metalcore and just plain metal.   Heavy, thrashy, catchy, vocals sound angry and abrasive… classic sounding guitar solos… but I feel like there would be some flailing arms at a live show… Oh, wait, I just saw them on Friday and there were!   but I think the kids were a little worn out from the other couple arm flaily bands.  Good stuff, nice to have a new release from them.

Bury Your Dead
It’s Nothing Personal
Victory
48:31 – 12 Tracks
Starts off strong, big wall of sound shoving you over, kicks into monster riffs, abrasive vocals…. then… some singy-vocals.   Beside the clean-ish choruses, the music is heavy, low-end metal stuff… but singing more melodic choruses make this more for the kids that wear girls jeans.    but damn, if the heavy parts weren’t so cool… I’d write this off as poop.

Five Finger Death Punch
“Hard To See”
Prospect Park
3:30 – 1 Tracks
Wow, I was expecting to get my ass kicked by this track… but it just sounds like early 2000’s active rock or almost “nu-metal”…   after about half way, it gets a bit more angry, but overall, it seems overly commercial to me.   Since the “other” station has been playing this for a week or so now, I kind of felt left out, but after hearing it myself… meh.. they can have it!

Judas Priest
A Touch Of Evil Live
Epic
59:56 – 11 Tracks
New Live Priest!   Recorded during the tours ranging from 2005-2008.   The tours were awesome… why shouldn’t this live CD be?   It is great, captures a good slab of what live Priest is like…. it’s pretty raw, but it’s actually nice, it feels more like a REAL live album instead of one that’s been over produced.

Halford
Live Insurrection (Remastered)
Metal God
Disc 1: 63:11 – 15 Tracks
Just like with the album above… a great slab of what it was like to see Halford live… however, this is just a remastered, re-release.   It was cool to see this tour live also.  All of the best song that Halford made with Priest, Fight and Halford…

Red Right Hand
Plotting Your Death
Screaming Ferret
51:39 – 12 Tracks
This sounds like real old school Testament… last release from Locomotive’s “Screaming Ferret Wreckcords ”   Pretty good stuff, just like raw old school Testament!
