New stuff this week… 1/30/12

Lamb of God
Resolution
Epic
http://www.lamb-of-god.com/home
This is the real deal folks.  Lamb of God are firing on all pistons.  They took a good break to recharge and took their time crafting this new album.  it’s heavy and brutal, yet still has a groove…. yet again… it has a certain rawness that Ashes of the Wake had.  I think this is going to be one of the best of 2012… and it’s only January.  This album has the feel of

Iron Fire
Voyage of the Damned
Napalm
http://www.ironfire.dk/
Not quite speed metal, not quite power metal, but a good healthy mix of both.  While there’s a little bit of cheese here, it’s all pure metal and good stuff.

Riotgod
Invisible Empire
Metalville
http://riotgod.com/
Big giant meaty riffs… kind of like CoC… but vocals have some melody and harmonizing… a little bit like Alice in Chains or Trouble.  This all makes sense, because two of the guys in the band are from Monster Magnet (Bassist and Drummer)  There’s a modern Sabbath type of vibe and just a good almost catchy feel too.

Iron Savior
The Landing
AFM
http://www.iron-savior.com/
An aggressive fast take on power metal… I guess it could be kind of like the Iron Fire above…  yeah, they both have “Iron” in the title… but they both are power/speed metal.  This one however, is a bit more on the power metal side with the wanky riffs and bigger chorus sing-a-long type things.  More singy and not as much edge on the vocals here.  It’s still pretty good stuff.

Blessed By A Broken Heart
Feel the Power
Tooth & Nail
http://www.myspace.com/blessedbyabrokenheart
This band is pretty interesting… it has a glam feel… or a warrant/winger/poison sort of thing, but with a metalcore/”Post hardcore” mix too.  I really haven’t heard anything quite like this before… mixing these two styles….and as an open minded metal fan, I can appreciate and actually sort of like it.   It’s one of those things where you keep listening to it, and after about a half our, realize… “oh am I still listening to that?  wow, that wasn’t too bad… huh… aren’t I supposed to hate something like this?”  haha.   So yes.  it’s kinda neat.

Dead Icons
Condemned
Bullet Tooth
http://www.facebook.com/deadicons
A punky/hardcore type thing.  Fast guitars, screaming vocals… There’s some good brutal stuff on here, and some raw heavy stuff too.  Overall I’d have to just lump this into hardcore.

Dunderbeist
Black Arts & Crooked Tails
Indie Recordings
http://www.myspace.com/dunderbeist
This is Norway’s answer to System of a Down, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson all in one.  A bit of an industrial feel, but not full on, a little metal, a little avant-garde, or off the wall experimental type stuff.  It’s probably a lot better live too…. I think it’s still worthy of a listen or two.

Ribozyme
Presenting the Problem
Indie Recordings
http://www.myspace.com/ribozymenorway
Kind of a stoner metal thing… driven by some nice big guitars, great riffs and almost Foo Fighters-esque vocals.  Music does get heavy in parts with some more driving guitars and double bass drums.

New stuff this week… 1/23/12

Primal Fear
Unbreakable
Frontiers
http://www.primalfear.de/
Another solid effort from Primal Fear.  They have their formula… solid heavy power metal, and they keep it up.  Halford-like vocals and a great classic thrash-edged power metal sound.

Astral Doors
Jerusalem
Metalville
http://www.astraldoors.com/
This is a good mix of traditional metal and probably a pinch of power metal (vocally)  Vocals are comparably similar to Dio.  I’d say this band has a bit more of a metal feel than a typical power metal band.

Liberteer
Better To Die On Your Feet…
Relapse
http://www.facebook.com/Liberteer
Grindy, thrashy, deathy… short songs, straight, to the point in your face classic grind. A bit of a black metal tone in the guitars, some catchy thrash beats, and brutal at the same time.  Good stuff.

Stonecreep
The Deathmarch Crushes On
Old School
http://www.stonecreep.com
This seems to be the week of almost power metal stuff.  This is more of a heavier thrash thing with power metal influences.  Vocals are pretty much abrasive, but have that power metal feel/style.  It’s a good mix of heavier thrash with a power metal influence.  Good drumming and guitar work too.

Oz
Burning Leather
AFM
http://www.ozofficial.com/
A Finnish band that has been around since 1977, split in 1991, then reunited in 2010.   While I haven’t head of this band before, I can appreciate a band that can get back together and put together a solid album.  It’s got a classic metal feel (that’s where they came from) a bit of a raw sound, but yet a modern feel too.

Trillium
Alloy
Frontiers
http://www.amandasomerville.com/
Pretty much a fe-metal sort of thing.  Amanda Somerville put this project together,  She is the person that filled in for Epica on their 2008 tour with Symphony X.  This release is mostly standard metal, a little bit of prog/power influence, but is in all basics, a typical “fe-metal” thing.

I Exist
II: The Broken Passage
Prosthetic
http://iexistband.com/Home.html
Kind of a sludgey thrashy mix.  A bit doomy too I guess.  They are from Indianapolis and were on the Saw 3D soundtrack.  A bit rwa

Dragonland
Under the Grey Banner
AFM
http://www.myspace.com/dragonland
With a name like Dragonland, you’d expect this to be full on power metal with big vocals and keyboards and epic power metalness… and in this case, you would be correct!  I used to be a fan of power metal like this, but I don’t know, I need something a bit more heavy, or with a bit more grit.  For power metal fans, this is right up your alley.  Great musically and a nice full sound.

New stuff this week… 1/16/11

Super low budget cliffs notes mini-reviews – written as I listen to the new stuff….

Corrosion of Conformity
The Doom (Single)
Candlelight Records
http://www.coc.com/
Wow, they’re back!  Cool, right?  Sludgey, fast metal… catchy and still cool.   It’s just one song, changes moods… goes from all out fast, to toned down more moody parts… all in one song!  A great start to a comeback!

Nightwish
Imaginarium
Roadrunner Records
http://www.nightwish.com/en/
The inventors of big epic “Fe-metal” are back… they aren’t breaking any new ground here, but it’s a great addition to their catalog.  Big epic symphonic stuff, a mix of female and metal male vocals… metal stuff, symphony stuff… you know the drill.

Abigail Williams
Becoming
Candlelight Records
http://www.myspace.com/abigailwilliams
We had a single for this… it seemed a bit darker and more old school black metal sounding… same goes for the rest of the album.  Can’t say it’s a bad thing.  to get more evil and more dark… right?   Although… the songs are kind of long and seem to lose there way here and there.

Lillian Axe
Lava On My Tongue (Single)
CME Records
http://www.lillianaxe.com/
Just a single, but it’s got that classic metal sound.  This band has always been pretty solid… just not all that balls out heavy.

Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters
Bikers Welcome, Ladies Drink Free
AFM Records
http://bucksatan.com/
Normally… I’d say… WTF is this?!  acdtually I am going “WTF?” anyways.  The only reason this is on this list, as it’s the country alter-ego of Al Jourgenson from Ministry fame.  So, yeah, not sure if will get real airplay… but here I am talking about it.

Hate Squad
Katharsis
Massacre Records
http://www.hatesquad.com/
Mostly a death metal thing… vocally, almost seems a bit thrashy and maybe a bit hardcore and grindy musically.  Obviously with a bunch genres that I just spewed out there, there is a lot of different stuff going on.  They’ve been around for quite some time (1993) and while I don’t remember what the other stuff sounded like, I like this.

Almah
Motion
AFM Records
http://www.almah.com.br/
A good hard rock/metal thing.  Almost power metal, but with some more balls and not quite as technical… vocals echo Bruce Dickinson… songs are kinda catchy too.

The Devil’s Blood
The Thousandfold Empire
Metal Blade
http://thedevilsblood.com/
An interesting sort of occult metal thing,   taking some dark, doomy old school metal and adding almost Jefferson Airplane sounding vocals on top

Beaten to Death
Xes and Strokes
Mas-Kina Recordings
http://www.myspace.com/beatentodeathmetal#
Kind of a hardcore, blackened grind sort of thing.  In your face, brutal, and evil sounding… yet it doesn’t feel like they take themselves too seriously.  (This is me not reading up on them or anything… I just get that feeling)

El Caco
Hatred, Love & Diagrams
Indie Recordings
http://www.elcaco.com/
More or less a rock sort of thing from Norway.  A little bit of a Tool vibe… nothing leaning too “metal” on here.  Good catchy hard rock though.

God Seed
Live At Wacken
Indie Recordings
http://www.myspace.com/godseedband
This is Gaahl’s new incarnation of Gorgoroth (after the whole splitup/name dispute thing)  This is a live show from Wacken 2008 while they still performed as Gorgoroth.  Quality black metal of course… and it even comes across well live.

Everything Went Black
Cycles of Light
Prosthetic
http://everythingwentblack.us/

Their facebook page says that they are “Blackened Hardcore”  And I can hear that… it’s really that on a base level.  You can hear hardcore basics, but there’s a dark black metal feel to the guitar tone… and there is a lil bit of melody there too.  Prosthetic rarely signs duds.
