New stuff this week… 2/27/12

Eluveitie
Helvetios
Nuclear Blast
http://eluveitie.ch/
Probably one of the coolest folk metal bands out there.  Is there such a thing?  Cool and folk metal?  Yeah, I guess… This band keeps it metal, but with all of those crazy folk elements too (Like a Hurdy Gurdy).  For the most part it’s fairly thrashy and catchy.  Throw in that violin, hurdy gurdy and bagpipes, you’d be like… WTF?  These aren’t metal instruments?  Well this band works them in perfectly.

Heidevolk
Batavi
Napalm
http://www.heidevolk.com/www/
It must be folk metal week?   This band is Dutch and has been around for 10 years.  This band isn’t quite as folky as Eluveitie, whereas they don’t have folky instruments.  There is more of a viking metal feel here, not quite as heavy/brutal as Amon Amarth, as there are some more clean sung vocals… but the music is pretty much all metal.  Melodic guitars with a bit of a folk feel.

Exciter
Death Machine
Massacre
http://www.myspace.com/exciterofficial
This band has been around for quite some time, and actually this album came out in 2010 for the rest of the world and is now available officially in North America.  This band is what Thrash metal is all about.  Just classic in your face thrash.  This album has over the top vocals, catchy fast riffs and a nice raw in your face sound.

Napalm Death
Utilitarian
Century Media
http://www.napalmdeath.org/
After a bozillion albums, these guys are still at it.  While the production is a bit more polished, these guys still deliver a raw in your face deathy grind.   Songs are still fairly short and brutal as hell.  They really make you want to beat someone’s face in.  🙂

Ministry
Double Tap (Single)
AFM
http://www.thirteenthplanet.com/ministry/?article=41
While just a single, this almost takes me back to some old school Ministry.  Catchy, fast and industrial sounding.  Reminds me a bit of “Theives”  or “Burning Inside” but heavier and louder!  Can’t wait to hear more.

Christian Mistress
Possession
Relapse
http://www.christianmistress.com/
This band sounds like Trouble with female vocals.  Also a bit like another new release… The Devil’s Blood.  Kind of a doomy, stoner metal thing but yet, it’s got an upbeat tempo and a bit more catchy than a typically doom or stoner band.

The Intersphere
Hold On, Liberty!
Long Branch
http://theintersphere.com/
I’m not quite sure why this is being marketed to metal radio… it’s more of an alternative hard rock sort of thing.  It’s better than the drivel out there like Seether, or Hurt or whatever is out there now.  But yeah it’s not really that heavy and just more melodic.  It reminds me a bit of Big Wreck

Pigeon Toe
The First Perception
Lifeforce
http://www.myspace.com/pigeontoeband
This is a Prog Rock/Metal band from Germany, while starting off some songs more like a Porcupine Tree, they get going a bit more into some metal type stuff… but yeah it’s got more of an emphasis on the Progressive Rock than Metal and while not a math metal band, they seem to have a good feel with some vocal harmonies, great melodies and some catchy guitar.  This is probably an album to just hang out, sit back and chillax to.  (yes I said “chillax”)

Death
Vivus!
Relapse
http://www.emptywords.org/
Two separate live shows from godfathers of death metal… One from Whiskey A Gogo and one from Dynamo Open Air.  It’s amazing they pulled off their later stuff off live…. it’s just so complex…. I saw them play once at metalfest and I guess at the time I didn’t really appreciate it… that and it was in the Eagles Ballroom and sounded like ass… everything sounded like ass in there for a number of years.  Anyway, this is a great double disc set highlighting how great this band was and how great they were live!

Mr. Big
One Acoustic Night – Live from the Living Room
Frontiers
I actually don’t have this to listen to… so, no review, sorry!

New stuff this week… 2/20/19

Corrosion of Conformity
Corrosion of Conformity
Candlelight
http://www.coc.com/
First album in about seven years, and they picked up right where they left off.. big meaty riffs, catchy parts, and a nice large bottom end to the sound.  These guys have been around for a while and this album shows that they still know how to rock!

Iron Mask
Black as Death
AFM
http://www.iron-mask.com/
A pretty decent power metal band.  (Actually the third in 3 weeks with “Iron” in the band name)  There’s a good heavy side to the music, yet there is still some cool epic power metal type stuff too.  It’s not quite up there like Mystic Prophecy for all out metal, but the catchiness and virtuosity of Iron Mask makes it worthy.

Beyond Dishonor
Travesty
Thorpe
http://www.myspace.com/beyonddishonor
This is generally a hardcore sort of thing.  Lots of shouting/growling, chugga chugga, a bass drop/breakdown or two… there’s a little bit of a Pantera feel to it also.  While it’s not anything new and groundbreaking, it’s probably one of the better if not only decent hardcore release of the year so far.

Martyrd
The Mortal Coil
Maniac Records
http://www.martyrd.com/
I’m not really quite sure what category to put these guys in.  I think “Metal” is a good category.  I’d say it’s almost prog-metal.  There’s some virtuous guitar work, lots of layers of things going on… it’s thrashy, and catchy too.

Hope Dies Last
Trust No One
Standby Records
This is an Italian metalcore or “post hardcore” band as they call it.  It’s kind of typical for this type of band… brutal heavy parts, then more happy singy choruses with more happy sounding guitars.  I think I’m too old for this stuff, that or I’m not into skinny jeans.

Asphyx
Deathhammer
Century Media
http://www.myspace.com/officialasphyx
Kind of a doomy black/death metal thing going on.  They’ve been around since the late 80’s, so obviously they have been a bit pioneering in the genre (after taking a break in the early 2000’s)  While not all super fast and full of blast beats… this just has a big heavy sound that crushes you.  A little bit catchy with some of the riffs… the vocals are nice and abrasive, and while parts are doomy, there is a heavier payoff on most of the tracks.

Spock’s Beard
The X-Tour Live (2 CDs)
Mascot
http://www.spocksbeard.com/
While not really all that metal, it is some awesome Prog rock.  One of my favorite prog bands.  It’s amazing that this band can pull off what they do live… especially with as few shows they play each year.   Disc one is the whole album “X” and disc two are other songs from their history.  A must have for the Spock’s Beard fan!

Zeroking
Kings of Self-Destruction
Vanity
http://www.myspace.com/zeroking
A hard rock/metal band with a tiny bit of a 80s/90s sound.  The riffs and some of the vocal styles make it sound like it’s right out of the early 90’s… almost like one of those great bands that everyone forgot about thanks to grunge.  However, they do have a little bit of a heaviness

Caliban
I Am Nemesis
Century Media
http://calibanmetal.com/
One of the better modern metalcore bands… they kind of have that New Wave of American metal sound going on, even though they are an established band from Europe.  The music seems to be a little more edgy and while they have some clean parts, the music and heavier parts more than make up for it… it leans more towards the melodic death metal side of things.

WORT-FM Loud Rock Top 20 for the Week of 2/13/12

New stuff this week… 2/13/12

Mystic Prophecy
Ravenlord
Massacre
http://www.mysticprophecy.net/
This band has been around for a while, but this is the first release actually marketed to US metal radio!   These guys take the normal power metal and add some balls to it.  All without taking away what makes power metal cool.  It’s catchy, fast, and in your face.  The riffs and drumming are off the hook.  Vocals are over the top, and even get into a growl here and there… hopefully without scaring away power metal purists.

Avatar
Black Waltz
eOne
http://avatar.net/
A Swedish melodic death metal band.  They seem to have a decent sound, nothing that hasn’t been done before.  It’s got a nice crisp sound, there are some more atmospheric elements involved here, like take some classic At The Gates or Soilwork and make it a bit more modern, mixed with some maybe, Slipknot?   Songs are catchy, vocals are abrasive and probably more accessible…

The Devastated
Devil’s Messenger
Century Media
http://www.facebook.com/TheDevastated
This band features former members of Oblige and Impending Doom… both pretty good bands.  This new album is kind of a deathy groove metal thing.  Definintely brutal.  You’ve got two vocals going on, one just brutal and cookie monster-like.  The other is just a vomiting screamy growl which just sounds scary and totally works with the brutal groove going on.

Legacy of Disorder
Last Man Standing
Black Orchard
http://www.legacyofdisorder.com/
A bit of a brutal feel with some thrashy catchy music.  These guys hail from New Zealand.  Primarily thrash, but with more abrasive vocals… comparable to Testament I guess.  I do feel my head bobbing along to the riffs and wanting to headbang more!  (They are opening for Gwar on their next leg)
Amoral
Beneath
The End
http://amoralweb.com/
Kind of a prog hard rock sort of thing.  In most parts, it’s pretty straightforward proggy hard rock, or some form of a new classic rock, but in a song or two, there’s a burst into abrasive vocals.  However, the overall feel of this album is more on the rock side than the metal side.

Blood Ceremony
Blood Ceremony
Metal Blade
http://www.myspace.com/bloodceremony
Kind of a creepy doomy stoner sort of thing.  This appears to be a re-release of their 2008 debut.  Female vocals, lots of organs, some flutes… but a big meaty stoner sound fill everything out.  So, yeah, flutes will always draw a Jethro Tull thing, but I guess it’s a bit of a folk metal vibe too.

The Kandidate
Facing the Imminent Prospect of Death
Napalm
http://www.thekandidate.com/
It’s almost on the melodic death thing, but maybe a bit more mainstream metal.  There are some thrash and black metal influences here, some dark doomy sludgey basics too… hell, I almost hear some punk too.  I guess at its core, it’s a sludgey punky metal mix.  It’s pretty cool… I mean just typing this while listening to it, I can hear all this different stuff… and that makes it interesting.

Pilgrim
Misery Wizard
Metal Blade
http://www.facebook.com/hailthepilgrim
This is a doomy, almost Cathedral sounding thing.  Overall, pretty sludgey and depressing.  Some people like this sort of thing, but it just doesn’t seem to really get going to the next level, where you might think it’s building to some sort of payoff, and most songs don’t really build up to anything.

Dawn of Ashes
Farewell to the Flesh EP
Metal Blade
http://www.myspace.com/dawnofashes
Their 2010 album got a lot of play by us, as an almost heir apparent to Dimmu Borgir, as a big sounding over the top black metal type thing.  This EP adds a new track as well as some dubstep remixey stuff.  The new track seems okay, it doesn’t really seem to have strong focus, and remixes?  Well, okay

Lillian Axe
XI: The Days Before Tomorrow
CME
http://www.lillianaxe.com/
This band has been around for a while.  This new album is full of new great classic hard rock sounding anthems.  Some tracks are more power ballads, others are some catchy hard rock songs.  I kind of found myself enjoying most of the songs on here.
