New stuff this week 5/21/07
A Perfect Murder
War of Aggression
Victory
36:32 – 10 Tracks
This is a pretty good hardcore/metal album! It’s pretty straightforward, songs are pretty catchy, heavy and have some awesome riffs and breaks. It’s a good solid metal release, the production is clean and it’s just a good album to crank up and throw your cares out the window! You’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit.
Hell Within
Shadows of Vanity
Lifeforce
33:50 – 9 Tracks
Just all out metal here… with a little Trivium sound mixed in. As above, it’s pretty good, nothing groundbreaking, but still worth a bunch of listens as you’ll just want to air-guitar and air-drum along! Even with the “Trivium-singy” part vocals, the backround music is just all out thrashy heavy stuff that sounds more like the The Gathering era Testament. A little deeper into the album, the vocals hit me as being like CoC. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Devin Townsend
Ziltoid The Omniscient
InsideOut
53:30 – 11 Tracks
Devin’s a musical genius. This project is a bit of a cross between SYL and the DTB. It’s got his trademark sound, not quite in your face like SYL, but yet still enough metal to keep it all interesting! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Sonata Arctica
Unia
Nuclear Blast
62:42 – 13 Tracks
I listened to this CD right after the above… I hit play and thought it was still Devin Townsend! The vocals sounded just like Devin. This is not Devin of course. It’s Sonata Arctica… it’s a pretty run of the mill power metal release. I can’t say it’s all that metal, it’s just kind of making its way through the album. So, yeah, it’s ok, you may hear it on the Mosh Pit.
Pro-Pain
Age of Tyranny
Candlelight
39:28 – 11 Tracks
Classic Pro-Pain! Just good ol aggressive angry solid Pro-Pain here. I don’t think anything will ever be as cool and catchy as their debut, “Foul Taste of Freedom.” This new album has some good concise songs that are still a bit catchy and as I said, good and aggressive! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Sonic Syndicate
Only Inhuman
Nuclear Blast
46:04 – 12 Tracks
At first listen, the music sounds a bit Swedish… and upon looking at the bio sheet… they are! They fit the Gothenburg type of sound, but mixed with some of the American metalcore. How big of circle does that make anyways? A lot of the metalcore was based on the Scandinavian sound, now to have a Swedish band sounding metalcore… it sure is confusing! Either way, these guys have the more modern Soilwork sound mixed with a little Meshuggah and your run of the mill metalcore. It’s pretty decent, so you’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!
One Man Army and the Undead Quartet
Error In Evolution
Nuclear Blast
54:06 – 13 Tracks
Cool and catchy thrash stuff. Again, a little like Soilwork and the Swedish sound. This one isn’t quite so metalcore… it’s not at all! Just out and out metal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Octava Sperati
Grace Submerged
Candlelight
37:57 – 10 Tracks
I could probably write a canned review for all of the female fronted euro-metal bands out there now. This time, the music is a bit more doomy, but still the same clean operatic clean singing. It’s good, just like most of the other stuff, but it’s more of the same. If there’s time, we’ll try and work this in.
Stuff from last week that came in late….
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
In Glorious Times
The End
67:45 – 11 Tracks
Most of this CD is just experimental all over the place type stuff like Mr. Bungle or Lollipop Lust Kill, but even more all over and experimental. A track or two may fit as they are a bit heavier and pretty proggy, yet all over the place. I hate to play a CD that has only one or two tracks on it that would fit the show… but I guess they could act as a bridge for people that might like the crazier stuff, as I wouldn’t think anyone else (commercial radio) would play this band!
Tub Ring
The Great Filter
The End
43:30 – 14 Tracks
This is more poppy hard rock. Not sure if this is Mosh Pit material. The music is pretty cool, almost reminds me a bit of Porcupine Tree, and my head says, hey, if I play Porcupine Tree, I should play this too, right? Well, we’ll see. A lot of bands like this get passed up, so, I’ll have to say, if there’s time, this might be something I’ll throw on the air!
Becoming The Archetype
The Physics of Fire
SolidState
51:02 – 11 Tracks
These guys have it going on! This is all out brutal and heavy! The songs are catchy, melodic and brutal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!!
