New stuff this week 5/28/07

Deadlock
Wolves
Lifeforce
46:51 – 11 Tracks
Melodic death thrash sounding stuff with female clean vocals playing the normal metalcore emo guy part. The music is more scandanavian and heavy sounding than anything metalcore. The female vox add a nice different thing. Most stuff with the female vocals lately aren’t this brutal. It’s pretty cool and you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Ozzy Osbourne
Black Rain
Epic
46:28 – 10 Tracks
Wow, a new album from Ozzy. It’s pretty typical Ozzy album, some heavier songs, some slower songs. The heavier songs really are pretty well put together. I mean, they are more like good, catchy hard rock songs. The production sounds good, clean and punchy. There are clearly a bunch of effects on Ozzy’s voice… but it’s not too distracting. Blasko, Zakk and Mike Bordin put on a solid musical effort here, and I’ll be looking forward to seeing some of these songs live. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Job for a Cowboy
Genesis
Metal Blade
30:41 – 10 Tracks
Fast, brutal death metal here. If you like Dying Fetus or good old classic death metal, these guys are for you! Good guitar solos, fast brutal drumming, harsh brutal vocals and enough technicality to keep the metal nerds happy too. The sound is crisp and clean thanks to mixing and mastering by Andy Sneap. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Kamelot
Ghost Opera
SPV
44:03 – 11 Tracks
Pretty good effort from these more symphonic power metallers.  The vocals are a bit like Geoff Tate, the music stays interesting and not so formulaic.   It stays heavy enough to make it Mosh Pit worthy, and still maintains some cool prog metal fun.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Dream Theater
Systematic Chaos
Roadrunner
78:44 – 8 Tracks
As you may already know, Dream Theater is my favorite band, so in my eyes, they can do no wrong. But then again, I’m a metal programmer at a radio station, so I have to be kind of, sort of objective. When I first heard this CD, thanks to a magazine place in town, it was a quick listen and I was just looking for cool heavy stuff. That listen just told me that this new album is more of the same from Dream Theater, long drawn out songs with lots of instrumental breaks, the usual singing from James Labrie, etc. etc. Well, it is a lot of that, but upon a few more listens, as usual with these guys or the new Rush album for that matter, this album delivers well! So many layers of complexity, harmonies, melodies, all that good music stuff. The songs are actually kind of catchy and you’ll find yourself singing lines of songs to yourself or airdrum or guitaring other parts when you stop listening. This has everything for the usual DT fan, but with a new record label, they will bring in people who have previously given up on them, or just draw in brand new fans!  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

New stuff this week 5/21/07

A Perfect Murder
War of Aggression
Victory
36:32 – 10 Tracks
This is a pretty good hardcore/metal album! It’s pretty straightforward, songs are pretty catchy, heavy and have some awesome riffs and breaks. It’s a good solid metal release, the production is clean and it’s just a good album to crank up and throw your cares out the window! You’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit.

Hell Within
Shadows of Vanity
Lifeforce
33:50 – 9 Tracks
Just all out metal here… with a little Trivium sound mixed in. As above, it’s pretty good, nothing groundbreaking, but still worth a bunch of listens as you’ll just want to air-guitar and air-drum along! Even with the “Trivium-singy” part vocals, the backround music is just all out thrashy heavy stuff that sounds more like the The Gathering era Testament. A little deeper into the album, the vocals hit me as being like CoC. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Devin Townsend
Ziltoid The Omniscient
InsideOut
53:30 – 11 Tracks
Devin’s a musical genius. This project is a bit of a cross between SYL and the DTB. It’s got his trademark sound, not quite in your face like SYL, but yet still enough metal to keep it all interesting! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Sonata Arctica
Unia
Nuclear Blast
62:42 – 13 Tracks
I listened to this CD right after the above… I hit play and thought it was still Devin Townsend! The vocals sounded just like Devin. This is not Devin of course. It’s Sonata Arctica… it’s a pretty run of the mill power metal release. I can’t say it’s all that metal, it’s just kind of making its way through the album. So, yeah, it’s ok, you may hear it on the Mosh Pit.

Pro-Pain
Age of Tyranny
Candlelight
39:28 – 11 Tracks
Classic Pro-Pain! Just good ol aggressive angry solid Pro-Pain here. I don’t think anything will ever be as cool and catchy as their debut, “Foul Taste of Freedom.” This new album has some good concise songs that are still a bit catchy and as I said, good and aggressive! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Sonic Syndicate
Only Inhuman
Nuclear Blast
46:04 – 12 Tracks
At first listen, the music sounds a bit Swedish… and upon looking at the bio sheet… they are! They fit the Gothenburg type of sound, but mixed with some of the American metalcore. How big of circle does that make anyways? A lot of the metalcore was based on the Scandinavian sound, now to have a Swedish band sounding metalcore… it sure is confusing! Either way, these guys have the more modern Soilwork sound mixed with a little Meshuggah and your run of the mill metalcore. It’s pretty decent, so you’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!

One Man Army and the Undead Quartet
Error In Evolution
Nuclear Blast
54:06 – 13 Tracks
Cool and catchy thrash stuff. Again, a little like Soilwork and the Swedish sound. This one isn’t quite so metalcore… it’s not at all! Just out and out metal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Octava Sperati
Grace Submerged
Candlelight
37:57 – 10 Tracks
I could probably write a canned review for all of the female fronted euro-metal bands out there now. This time, the music is a bit more doomy, but still the same clean operatic clean singing. It’s good, just like most of the other stuff, but it’s more of the same. If there’s time, we’ll try and work this in.

Stuff from last week that came in late….

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
In Glorious Times
The End
67:45 – 11 Tracks
Most of this CD is just experimental all over the place type stuff like Mr. Bungle or Lollipop Lust Kill, but even more all over and experimental. A track or two may fit as they are a bit heavier and pretty proggy, yet all over the place. I hate to play a CD that has only one or two tracks on it that would fit the show… but I guess they could act as a bridge for people that might like the crazier stuff, as I wouldn’t think anyone else (commercial radio) would play this band!

Tub Ring
The Great Filter
The End
43:30 – 14 Tracks
This is more poppy hard rock. Not sure if this is Mosh Pit material. The music is pretty cool, almost reminds me a bit of Porcupine Tree, and my head says, hey, if I play Porcupine Tree, I should play this too, right? Well, we’ll see. A lot of bands like this get passed up, so, I’ll have to say, if there’s time, this might be something I’ll throw on the air!

Becoming The Archetype
The Physics of Fire
SolidState
51:02 – 11 Tracks
These guys have it going on! This is all out brutal and heavy! The songs are catchy, melodic and brutal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!!

New stuff this week 5/14/07

Carnal Forge
Testify For My Victims
Candlelight
48:16 – 12 Tracks
This album to me doesn’t seem to start off as aggressive as past efforts, it’s a bit more like Soilwork (of a couple albums ago). I’m a fan of Soilwork, so it works for me, to me, this just isn’t quite as catchy as previous albums. As you get in a bit deeper, the songs get heavier and a bit more technical. I think this is good stuff, the vocals seem a bit more out there in front. I think it’s a good CD and you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Cephalic Carnage
Xenosapien
Relapse
48:52 – 12 Tracks
Fast, crazy, intense, everything you’ve come to know and love about Cephalic Carnage! It’s all here, and they don’t disappoint. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Vintersorg
Solens Rotter
Napalm
52:57 – 10 Tracks
“Nordic Folk Metal” Mix some prog metal with black metal, and you have some Vintersorg. Of course there’s some folky stuff in here, piper flutes and whatnot. It gets pretty heavy in some parts, but mixed with some just plain rock/folky stuff. The black metal stuff is good, but sometimes when they mix it with the folky stuff it almost sounds like I had two different CDs playing at once. It’s fresh and different, so you’ll probably hear it on the Mosh Pit!

Autumn
My New Time
Metal Blade
48:28 – 11 Tracks
Fans of Lacuna Coil or Leave’s Eyes will like this, or hate it because it sounds like their band! hah As with many other bands like this to hit the shelves lately, this isn’t anything that stands above. Just standard hard rock with a prog edge to it, with clean female vocals on top. Run of the mill femetal. Yes, I just made up a new word. “Femetal” You may hear this on the Mosh Pit though.

Joshua’s Whisper
Drunk
Topshelf
29:25 – 10 Tracks
I’m not quite sure how to explain this one. Hard Metal Rock? I guess in the general sense, I’d have to call it metalcore. It’s just straight ahead hard rock/metal with some scream vocals mixed with flat clean vocals. It just sounds like a local band from whatever area of the country they are from. There are some cool catchy breakdowns, but overall, it’s a maybe for airplay on the ‘Pit.

Iced Earth
“Overture of the Wicked” EP
SPV
22:26 – 4 Tracks
The continuation of the “Something Wicked” story… I have to admit, I know that “Something Wicked” was a story and all that, but I didn’t really get what it was about, I just thought it was a great album. So, when I heard it was going to be continued, I thought, yeah, awesome… and here’s the first stage of it. The last 3 tracks on here are the “Something Wicked” trilogy re-recorded with the current lineup (Ripper Owens, Brent Smedley and whoever else) From the few listens of the new track, it’ll be great to hear the whole thing. You’ll hear this EP on the Mosh Pit for sure!

Despised Icon
The Ills of Modern Man
Century Media

Great new stuff from this Death-metalcore band. I would suppose that Pantera would be a “death metalcore” band at this point. The Music is fast, catchy, heavy and a bit technical. When the singer guy is singing verses, it’s pretty standard metal, but some of the cool breakdowns with the cookie monster stuff happening makes it really cool. This is way more death metal than it is metalcore… for that reason alone, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
