New Stuff This Week… 11/21/16

Metallica
Hardwired to Self-Destruct (2 CD)
Blackened
Well, they’re baaaaaaack.  And it’s good!  We’ve all heard the first few singles and they’re probably the highlight.  The others are a mix of mid-tempo-ish black album era type stuff.  Overall, good release, nice to see these guys put something out that’s kind of undisputable on the good side with no major flaws.  (even though it could have all fit on one disc)

Lamb of God
The Duke
Epic
We’ve heard the title track on here, pretty cool with mostly clean vox.  The other track is called Culling and that’s classic catchy heavy LoG.  The other 3 tracks are live at bonnaroo and Rock Am Ring… goood stuff.

Diamond Head
Diamond Head
Dissonance Productions
Well, without Metallica, I never would have heard of this band originally… and here we are, a week where there’s new albums by both bands.  This release is classic metal at its finest.  Good stuff.

Weapons Of Anew
Killshot (Single)
Independent
How do I say this… it’s classic modern metal.  Just a decent groove, pretty accessible, with a little bit of a heavy feel while being melodic.

DEAD HORSE TRAUMA
“LEFT UNSAID”
New Ocean Media
This is similar… more of a modern metalcore type thing though.  Clean vox, then kind of a breakdown thing with almost emo-ish vox.

DRESCHER
Steinfeld
Napalm Records
and…
DRESCHER
Erntezeit (Reissue)
Napalm Records
Kind of a thrashy melodic death folk metal

DIABULUS IN MUSICA
Dirge For The Archons
Napalm Records
Epic female fronted metal.  Some symphonic stuff, some death metal growls, so a bit like Epica.

Devilment
II – The Mephisto Waltzes
Label: Nuclear Blast Records
Kind of a blackened goth metal type thing with Dani Filth handling vocals.  So you’ll have a little similarity to Cradle of Filth, but this is a bit more straightfoward extreme metal  Good stuff.

Band: Natvre’s
Album: “Wrath”
Label: Argento records
Classic Black metal.  good production, kind of brutal but with that good creepy melody that black metal is known for.

Band: Karma Rassa
Album: Talks To Innerself
Label: Sound Age
Atmospheric rock/prog. Approaching a little bit of metal from a doomy side of things, and yeah, definitely fits solid into the prog genre.

Science of Sleep
Hellmouth
Bastardied Recordings
Full on Death metal, but maybe more of a brutalcore type thing.  There’s a pinch of melody and just a little feeling of that sumerian type sound.

Scorched
Echoes of Dismemberment
Unspeakable Axe Records
Classic grooving death metal with a black metal feel.

Master of Cruelty
Archaic Visions of the Underworld LP
Blood Harvest
Some raw blackened death metal

Bloodride
Planet Alcatraz
Inverse
Deathy/thrash metal.  Thrashened Death Metal?  Yeah.  Mostly death metal, but a thrashy feel.

Band: Violblast
Album: Conflict
Label: Suspiria records
Brutal thrash, big meaty riffs, a classic thrash thing, but a heavier full brutal feel underneath.  Great stuff.

KHAOS DEI
Opus II: Catechism
Osmose Productions
French melodic death metal.  Good groove, heavy kind of grindy stuff, but yet good melodic death type stuff.

Solitude
Beneath The Sky
Test Your Metal Records
Heavier than typical classic metal.  Good groove, good edge, has that German “Accept” metal type feel.  (from Japan!)

Red Cain
Self-Titled
Self-Release
Gothed up standard metal… decent stuff.

Heavydeath
In Circles We Die DLP
Iron Bonehead
Doomy blackened metal, decent groove

Defiant
Time Isn’t Healing
Self-Release
Keyboard heavy proggy power metal.  There’s a great metal edge here, so it’s not just boop boop raise your fist and sing-a-long.  Good stuff for a power metal fan.

Bölzer
Hero CD/LP
Iron Bonehead
Blackened death metal with a groove… Kind of melodic death musically actually… vox are a bit of deathyt black metal too.

LIBER NULL
I, The Serpent
Osmose Productions
Kind of a blackened doomy metal, some parts getting into ambient post-metal too.  the heaver stuff is decent.

Leprous
Live at Rockefeller Music Hall
InsideOut
Live album… prog band not quite getting into metal, but it’s good stuff if you’re into more melodic prog stuff.

Primogenorum
Damned Hearts in the Abyss of Madness
Forever Plagued
Raw blackened metal a bit doomy, production a bit mushy… realllly underground stuff and not really my thing.

Entrapment
Through Realms Unseen
Pulverised Records
Melodic death, with a bit more doom going on for the pace/feel.  It’s got a headbanging vibe, good riffs and brutal-ness.   Some parts are just classic death metal, some have more a doomy pace to them.  overall pretty good.

Krepitus
The Eyes of The Soulless
Self-Release (asher)
Thrashy and kind of technical/melodic death type stuff.  Great riffs, catchy, and yeah, brutal in parts too.  Great stuff.

Kind of deathy grind… good stuff, wall of brutal sound!

The Sun Shining Cold
Label:  VTT Music (Indie)
Metalized industrial alt-metal.  Kind of along the lines of a Static X but maybe more melodic (clean vox)

DEVAST
Apocalyptic Human Extinction
Gore House Productions
Brutal death metal, no fucking around, maybe a pinch of grind in this brutality.  good stuff.

Tactus
Bending Light
Self-Release
Melodic death, but quite proggy… reminds me a bit of the heaver side of that band Fair to Midland.  Pretty cool stuff.  Clean and harsh vox.

SpiritBell
Guided by Evil Light (EP)
Label: Witches Brew
Old school sounding doomy metal.  A bit raw, throwback metal sound.  A classic doom thing

Samsara
Bloodlines
Self Released (High Road Publicity)
Kind of melodic death, a bit of a moderm metal feel, a little math metal and heavy riffs, a bit of a grooving death metal thing too.

Sirens Over Sumeria
Omelas
Imminence Records
This is some proggy metalcore.  You have all that chugga chugga metalcore stuff with the harsh vox, but some good proggy guitar work… maybe throw in some djent too.

DEGREES OF TRUTH
The Reins of Life
Label:  Underground Symphony
Progressive symphonic metal from Italy, operattic female vox going on for most of it. The heavier proggy stuff gets pretty cool, but there’s a lot of slower parts too.

Band: MorphiuM
Album: The Blackout
Label: Mass Productions
Melodic death, catchy heavy and deathy in parts, and in other parts, it kind of sounds like a laid back Sevendust song.  Good mix of heavy and melodic.

Black Sabbath
Paranoid Super Deluxe

Most songs under a minute!  Brutal grindy death metal

ERA DECAY

Kind of a proggy power blackened melodic death thing

ARMAGEDDON (serbia)
Triptych

A bit melodic, maybe gothy.  Vox seem a bit more, like pop/goth/alternative.  Music is a little bit of a standard metal type thing.

Blackened
Truth Behind Destruction
Label: Witches Brew
They have the whole classic thrash thing going on, sounds like they’re nailing that old trading tape sound from the 80’s.  As a matter of fact, I had to make sure this wasn’t some reallly underground band re-issuing their demo tape from the 80’s.  But nope, it’s new and raw.

UBUREN
Fra Doden Fodes Liv
Via Nocturna Records
This is some raw black metal.  A bit in your face and brutal yet it still has that classic black metal melody too

Label:  Self-Released
Sex comedy rock type stuff.  Not quite metal musically, but it is soooo “metal”

Protokult
Oy Kanada (single)
Self-Release
Operatic female vox, bouncy melodic death with a folk metal feeling.  Interesting stuff.

The Chronicles of Israfel
A Trillion Lights, Tome II
BOH Records
Melodic death… or almost some sort of metalcore.  The music has brutality, melodic stuff, but the clean vox lean a bit to the modern metalcore.  We could probably call this proggy melodic death too, because it kind of switches up a bunch too.  Good stuff.

The Neal Morse Band
The Similitude of a Dream
Radiant
A lot of self induced hype from the band and well, a lot of early reviews saying the same.  This is really a prog rock/hard/rock bordering on prog metal in parts masterpiece.  Comparable to Spock’s Beard’s Snow.  A lot of great prog and signature Neal Morse stuff going on in this 2 disc concept album.  All band members contributing greatly.  Album of their careers (as they say)?  I dunno.  it’s awesome for a fanboy like me.  Maybe a few more listens.  Great stuff, and maybe a track or two are worthy of some Mosh Pit play.

New Stuff This Week… 11/7/16

Superjoint
Caught Up In The Gears of Application
Housecore
Probably not my favorite Phil project, but I don’t hate it…  This new one is heavy, in your face, raw and yeah, it’s got grooves too.

Forest Wars
Worship and Slaughter
Self-Released
Grindy and in your face.  Brutal quick songs

Annisokay
Devil May Care
SPV
Modern metal core with clean emo-ish vox.

Metallica
Atlas Rise
Blackened
Another track of new Metallica goodness.  They are keeping that classic metallica sound and making a good album from what it sounds like so far!

Enslaved
The Sleeping Gods – Thorn
By Norse Music
full-length album comprised of rare material from 2010/2011.  Mostly melodic doomy death metal.

Code Orange
“Forever”
Forever
Roadrunner
Just some grooving kinda sludgey metal.

HIEROPHANT
Mass Grave
Season of Mist
Grindy death metal… when it’s not full on grind, it’s just classic grooving death metal.

CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX
Bronze
Season of Mist
Experimental post-prog-doom-rock metal.  A little like Tool and Porcupine Tree and some Queens of the Stone age doom stuff.

Esben and the Witch
Older Terrors
Season of Mist
Female fronted ambient post-metal.

GLENN HUGHES
Resonate
Frontiers Music s.r.l.
Now this guy… he’s the real deal, been around forever, in a ton of bands and is still at the top of his game.  This is some good classic hard rock.  Might be good for a spin or two!

PRETTY MAIDS
Kingmaker
Frontiers Music s.r.l.
This is some great classic hard rock too.  It’s too bad that people in the US just don’t really like this kinda stuff anymore.  Different times I guess.

Naberus
The Lost Reveries
Eclipse Records
Has a strong modern In Flames thing going on.  Heavy, melodic death type stuff, crossing over into a little melodic hardcore.  A good groove, maybe a little classic metalcore too.

Downfall of Gaia
Atrophy
Metal Blade Records
Long songs of doomy melodic black metal.  While heavy and decent black metal, it gets a little too drony and post-metal for me.

HammerFall
Built To Last
Napalm Records
Another new album from these veterans.  Just classic power metal going on… Big riffs, catchy sing a longs.  good stuff.

Arkona
Vozrozhdenie
Napalm Records
Russion folk metal, heavy parts are brutal heavy, folky parts keep it well, you know, folky and catchy.   Overall, it’s a great balance of melodic death type stuff and a folky feel.  Good stuff.

Attila
Chaos
SharpTone Records
Metalcore with a decent groove, but with some anthemic solid rock type choruses.  Catchy and stuff, maybe not long term for the Mosh Pit

Cognition
Procession Of Thoughts
Overman Productions
Melodic groove metal with a little bit of metalcore, a pinch of djent.  Clean vox, harsh vox.  Hints of death metal, prog metal, metalcore… all thrown together… It works.

GOODBYE, KINGS
Vento
Argonauta Records
Instrumental Post Rock with some good prog leanings… it’d probably make a good background to, um, something.

Old Chapel
Visions from Beyond
Chaos Records
Classic death metal with a big big groove, cookie monster vox, catchy riffs

Xoth
Invasion of the Tentacube
Self-Release
Melodic death metal, catchy guitar attacks, btutal blackened death parts, but great classic metal guitars too

Pohjoisen soturit
Oksat pois… ja osa latvuksista
Inverse
Grooving old school death metal, or maybe just cookie monstered groove metal.  There is a little melodic doomy death going on, but did I say it had groove?

NEPHROLITH
Paleness of the Bled World
Label:  Cursed Records
Classic brutal black metal.  Good stuff.

AKASAVA
Nothing At Dawn
Label:  Triton’s Orbit
Psychedelic Doom, catchy groove and classic out there doom

Black metal, a little creepy with some ghastly background vox, otherwise, classic melodic black metal

ROTTEN UK
That Is Not Dead (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Kind of a grindy punk metal.  quick short songs.

WITCHTRAP
Trap the Witch (CD, LP, TAPE)
Hells Headbangers
Blackened classic metal.  So just a groovin’ classic metal but with some black metal type vox.

Spiritus Mortis
The Year Is One
Svart Records
A doomy melodic metal, maybe a little like Solitude Aerternus or a heavier Trouble.

Hammer King
King is Rising
Cruz Del Sur Music
Classic metal/power metal.  Catchy and big voice!

Shark Infested Daughters
These Tides, Our Tombs
Self-Release
Meleoid metalcore type stuff.  Heavy, catchy, a little symphonic/epic in parts too.  Kinda cool.

Trees of Eternity
Hour of the Nightingale
Svart Records
Female fronted melodic doomy type stuff.

Chhinnamasta
Vajra-Sarpa 12″ MLP
Iron Bonehead
Doomy creepy black metal.  Cold and scary

Face of Oblivion
Cataclysmic Desolation
Comatose Music
Another classic brutal death metal thing.  No fucking around, nothing ground breaking, just good ol death metal.

Quicksand Dream
Beheading Tyrants
Cruz Del Sur Music
Melodic doom type stuff.  Clean vox, music has a doom feel, but also just a classic hard rock/metal thing too.  good grooves

Ruinous
Graves of Ceasless Death
Dark Descent Records
You know when you hear those first few bars of something you know it’s gonna be good?  Yeah, this is the stuff.  Brutal death metal, heavy and with no fucking around.  Big fat grooves too.

GAEREA
Gaerea
Everlasting Spew Records
Blackened doomy death metal.  Good grooves, a bit melodic too.  Just good all around “extreme” metal.

YSENGRIN / SARTEGOS
Resvrrezionespiritval
I, Voidhanger Records
Sludgey blackened death metal on both.  Production is a little mushy

Versifist
Cipher
Vault of Dried Bones / Iron Bonehead
Blackened death metal, a little more on the melodic black metal side of things.  But these two songs are pretty good with a little melodic black metal type stuff too.

Mosh-Pit Justice
Stop Believing Lies
Label: Witches Brew
First off, what a great band name… this is classic thrash/power metal type thing.  Heavy, catchy and just 100% metal!

FALSE GODS
Wasteland
Label:  Self-Released
Sludgey doom metal but BIGGGG classic grooves.  Abrasive vox, but a stomping fat sound..

Band: MYRKGRAV (NO)
Release: “Takk Og Farvel; Tida Er Blitt Ei Annen”
Label: Pest
Folk metal, with just a classic metal sound and vocal accents and a little instrumentation make it feel folky, but not over the top with hurdy gurdys or anything.

Balance Interruption
Door – 218
Label: Satanath Records & Abstruse Eerie Radiance
Experimental Black Metal.  Brutal, quirky.. think of maybe a Mr. Bungle of black metal.  Good stuff.
