New Stuff This Week…8/25/14

Revocation
Deathless – Radio Single
Metal Blade
We’ve been fans of these guys since the very first listen.  Good technical brutal metal.  This first single from their Metal Blade debut starts off that way, builds up to be a bit more of a melodic death sound, still with brutal vox and technicality. can’t wait to hear more!

Brute Forcz
Out For Blood
Pure Steel Records
Standard metal, your basic riffs, shouted vocals with a bit of that “local” band vibe.

A Midnight Tragedy
Lost Under Infinite Sorrow
AMTMusic Publishing
Clean vocals, standard metal, a bit on the 90’s AOR metal sound, with a little bit of prog/power metal stuff going on.

The Order Of Israfel
Wisdom
Napalm Records
Melodic doomy metal, with a little bit of that slower Godsmack song vibe in parts (you know, like the song “Vooodooooo”)  but it does have some big meaty riffs, some cool melody and transcends doom into epic stoner 70’s metal jams.

Circle II Circle
Live At Wacken
Eagle Rock Entertainment
Some Savatage songs, some C2C songs, pretty decent stuff.

Empress AD
Empress AD
The End/Roadrunner Records
A grungy, yet melodic and dynamic proggy type thing.  Kind of like a Mastodon meets Pink Floyd.

ENGLISH DOGS
The Thing With Two Heads
Candlelight
Old school raw punked up thrash  Mostly thrash, but with that bit of a punk vibe

COLOMBIAN NECKTIE
Twilight Upon Us
(Self-released)
A bit thrashy, a bit grindy, some groove and hardcore too.

FORCE OF DARKNESS
Absolute Verb of Chaos and Darkness (CD)
Hells Headbangers
raw, scary black/death metal. Pretty heavy, sick and brutal with some raw production, but not quite like, you know, playing through an 1940’s telephone, you can actually hear what’s going on.  There’s just an evil feeling going on here too.

Get Stoked
Washington Street
Imminence Records
Commercial pop hard rock… not gonna be playing this, actually, nevermind.

SWINE OVERLORD
Parables of Umbral Transcendence
Gore House Productions
Full on brutal death metal.  Wall of brutal sound crushing you.

Here’s a bunch of stuff that came into the inbox lately, but was released earlier this year

PLANET OF ZEUS
Vigilante
Ihaveadrum Records
A bit like Clutch, but maybe with a little bit more energy.  So yeah, amped up stoner metal with a very strong Clutch vibe.

EXHUMATION
Bread Buttered on both Sides
Self-Released
28 April 2014
This is some cool thrashy extreme metal.  Musically it’s more thrash, vocally it’s more screamy.

ORDOXE
Beyond Mankind
Hymnes d’Antan
14 March 2014
Blackened death metal.  A cool groove, yet 100% brutal… yet, there’s also some doomy melodic parts too.  (and no, it doesn’t take away from the brutality!)

DESTRUKTOR / THRONEUM
A Prophecy of Nihilism (Split 7″)
Hells Headbangers
Both a bit raw, but both bands are just full on brutal death metal.  I’d have to go with the Destruktor on this one, production is a bit better, and well, now listening to it more, I can skip the Throneum… too raw and the vocals just are a shouty scream. (bad production)

MALHKEBRE
Revelation
I, Voidhanger Records
6 July 2014
Basic black metal.  Music is more like a black/death metal, vocals are just a creepy shouted/screamed and are somewhat haunting… like a ghost yelling at you for one of those haunted house things.

SVENGALI
Unscathed
Self-Released
15 April 2014
A metal band from Dubai of all places.  I’d say it’s a little bit of proggy melodic death.

GUILTY AS CHARGED
Leap of Faith
Self-Released
13 June 2014
Thrashy metal with a Bay Area feel from the 90’s.  A little Slayer, Death Angel, melodic thrash stuff.

CONJURO NUCLEAR
Conjuro Nuclear
Self-Released
Atmospheric black-ish metal.  A big keyboard base for part of this thing, otherwise it’s just kind of that wall of cold drony black metal guitars with vocals that are growly, but hardly discernable from the music.

ENCELADUS
Journey to Enlightenment
Self Released (online Metal Promo)
Power metal from Texas!  A bit over the top with the guitars, and heavier than the average “power metal” band.. some great stuff going on musically, lots of meedly guitars, quick drums to match and yeah, great screamy vocals.

Crimson Reign
The Calling (2014)
Self Released (Online MEtal PRomo PR)
Standard “metal” going on here. A little bit of a mercyful fate vibe vocally, maybe not quite over the top like the King, but just a tonal quality that reminds me of it.  Music can go from cool heavier metal and other tracks are power ballady.

Soulnerve
The Dying Light
Self Released (email-bandcamp)
Melodic thrashy death from the Netherlands.  Usually when we get an email from a band, it’s like, oh, this isn’t too bad, in this case, this is kinda like whoa, this is pretty damn good!  A cool melodic death with thrashy stuff going on too.  While it’s like, nothing we haven’t heard before, there’s just something about this and what they all mix together that does make it sound a bit unique too.

New Stuff This Week… 8/18/14

KING 810
Memoirs of a Murderer
(Roadrunner)
A lot of hype around this band about how much of troublemakers they are and whatever.  Either way, this album/band has a bit of a Slipknot vibe, heavy, catchy, a little raw, yet polished.  They seem to have that thing where metal fans and fringe “solid rock” metal fans could both like it.

PALLBEARER
Foundations of Burden
Profound Lore
A throwback doom type thing.  Some cool melodies, creepy ozzy-like vocals, big monster meaty stoner doom riffs.  Not completely boring like a lot of doom stuff can be.

FALLUJAH
The Flesh Prevails
(Unique Leader)
I’ve heard a lot about this band, but not actually heard them til now.  and whoa, they are upset about something. LOL  This sounds like pissed off brutal metal, but with a bit of melodic guitar flowing throughout. Then just gets all brutalprog  Yeah, that’s my new word.  Brutal all over the place, but yet, still does some crazy prog stuff too. The sheet music for this must look like a big blob of notes all over.  Great stuff.  It’s almost like Cynic met up with Behemoth or something.

OPETH
Pale Communion
(Roadrunner)
The death metal Opeth days are officially gone.  Not a big surprise, but two albums in a row with no more death vox.  See, for most bands that’d kinda suck, when a band kinda turns into almost a totally different genre, usually it’s not a good thing.  While yes, I do miss the growly stuff, I still do have a large catalog of old Opeth to revisit… They have been progressing towards this sound for a while and now I think they’ve honed this proggy 70’s themed heavy metal hard rock type stuff to a science.  The last album was pretty decent, but now this is the 2nd album of full on progressive hard rock stuff.  There are some slower spots on here which tend to drag a bit, but the more rockin parts are just so catchy, proggy and heavy in their own way.  good stuff.

Dictated
The Deceived
Metal Blade Records
Brutal heavy death metal. A classic death metal sound with a little hint of modern tech death stuff.  (and no, no djent) And what’s the extra cool thing about this band?  They’re Dutch and both guitarists are female.

Ace Frehley
Space Invader
eOne Entertainment
Straightforward classic hard rockin’ type stuff.

Neopera
Destined Ways
Eagle Rock Entertainment
German symphonic metal, also a side project of the bassist from Gamma Ray.  Operatic male and female vocals, but with a decent metal backing and, yeah some growls here and there.  Actually overall it’s a pretty dynamic album.

Halcyon Way
Conquer
Nightmare Records
First found out about these guys when they opened for Udo a year or so ago, and was immediately a fan.  At that point they were more like Nevermore than anything.  Technical proggy heavy metal. This album is a bit more straightforward heavy metal with a bit of a prog, clean, almost power metal sounding vox, with an occasional background growl. I think the songs with the growls and clean vox are a bit cooler, as it’s a bit more dimensional. Overall, I like this of course.

Accept
Blind Rage
Nuclear Blast USA
Solid german metal… heck, these guys are pretty much synonymous with “German Heavy Metal”  Second album with their “new” singer and it’s just another great album.  Musically (guitars!!), vocally and just all around. There’s no pissing on the Accept legacy here, they are keeping it up very well.

Black Trip
Goin’ Under
Prosthetic Records
Old school 70’s metal sounding stuff.  Even the production has a throwback feel.  Very raw, basic but yet still pretty cool.

Morgoth
God Is Evil (digital single/7″)
Century Media
Just 2 songs so far, but it’s good stuff.  Some of the originators of Death Metal, this is the first new studio stuff since 1996!  Has a throwback old school death metal feel, but it’s great stuff.

TWILIGHTFALL
The Energy of Soul
Svarga Music
Kind of proggy, a bit death metal, and a lil thrash too.  A pretty neat mix of genres… and They’re from Ukraine.

The Paramedic
Diary Of My Demons
Bullet Tooth
Metalcore, pretty heavy and stuff, but it has that electronic keyboard and wall of sound, almost overprocessed thing going on, which makes me think that there might be some autotuned emo vocals coming up… and yup, there they are.  I’ve said it before… I think I’m just too old.  It’s just so cool, heavy, brutal, then that chorus, and a drum machine too?  c’mon now. I mean, there’s some really cool melodic death parts in here, but then it gets ruined by pop metal garbage.

STUDFAUST
Where The Underdogs Bark
Soulseller Records
A raw thrashy punk with some melody.

Khtoniik Cerviiks
Heptaedrone TAPE
Iron Bonehead
Raw chaotic black metal, not quite that kind that sounds like it’s a 400 generation cassette tape dub recorded from AM radio, just some basic, not so technical black metal with a lil bit of thrashy undertone going on.

Trioscapes
Digital Dream Sequence
Metal Blade Records
Jazzy fusioney metal stuff.  Saxophones and crazy musicianship… side project of the bassist from BTBAM

Principality of Hell
Fire & Brimstone
W.T.C.Productions
Some heavied up thrash, just about blackened thrash, there’s a throwback to old Venom or Celtic Frost going on in here too.  Pretty cool throwback, but still being all new and evil too.

DEADLOCK
The Re-Arrival
Lifeforce
Female fronted melodic death… mostly fe-metal clean vox

Empire Auriga
Ascending the Solar Throne
Moribund
Ambient black metal… yikes, this one does sound almost like it’s a 400th generation cassette dub.  Just drony guitars, doomy, depressing and black metal screamy stuff.  (one man band)  Gonna have to pass on this one.

Cardinals Folly
Our Cult Continues!
Shadow Kingdom Records
Doomy stoner metal from Finland… a bit on the slower drony side, but still rockin’ enough to keep it interesting.

Provocator
Antikristus
Moribund
Some really lo-fi black metal. another one man band project, this is just really evil raw black metal.  I can hear potential and actually wish it sounded better, as this

Six String Slaughter
Born Unspoiled
Horror Pain Gore Death
First off, sweet band name!  Second… this is some good meat and potatoes catchy death metal.  Some catchy brutal riffs, big time fast drumming and great classic cookie monster vox. A bit of a thrash thing to keep the circle pit going at a good pace too!

MIDNIGHT
No Mercy for Mayhem
This band has been around for a while… thrashy with a dark, evil feel, maybe a pinch of some black metal

CHILDREN OF TECHNOLOGY
Future Decay (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Basic Thrash with a punk feel.

New Stuff This Week… 8/11/14

DragonForce
Maximum Overload
Metal Blade Records
Hey, it’s Dragonforce… over the top metal!  The first single had some melodic death riffs and vibe, the rest seems to be the normal Dragonforce that we all know and love. Fast guitar riffage, over the top vocals and fast fast fast!  This is the first time they’ve worked with a producer, and I guess songs are a bit shorter and to the point.

UPON A BURNING BODY
The World Is My Enemy Now
Sumerian
Catchy brutalcore or maybe melodic death stuff, with a bit of a djent Meshuggah vibe.  A great mix of all of those genres without really picking one of them, it takes the good stuff from each of those and has their own spin.

Incite
Up In Hell
Minus Head
Ritcie Cavalera’s band, and yeah, it does sound a bit like a Soufly/Sepultura, but really more on the heavy thrashy side of things. Decent new release, big meaty catchy brutal riffs and screamed vocals.

Heartist
Feeding Fiction
Roadrunner
I’m not sure I’m liking this direction Roadrunner is taking with their modern pop metal bands lately.  Emo singy vocals on this metalcore, warped tour type band.  At its base, the riffs and music seem cool with some prog elements, but the almost auto-tune sounding vocals are a deal breaker for me.  sigh. I guess not every song sounds auto-tuney, but it does have a similar formula.

Chemical Misuse
Follow The Light
Outspoken Records
A basic standard melodic metal/hard rock thing with some proggy undertones.  Has a bit of a local metal band vibe.

Unisonic
Light Of Dawn
Eagle Rock Entertainment
Michael Kiske’s band with some PC69 members and Kai Hansen with a power metal flavored feel.  More or less a standard metal thing, no real ball busting metal tracks here, just some sing-along and decent classic metal type stuff.

ID
Philosofía
Self-Released
Kind of a death metal thing, modern metal, a bit of melodic stuff, catchy brutal stuff, growly vocals.

Shaved Women
Just Death
Ektro
Raw punk stuff.  meh.

ABSYMAL LORD
Storms of Unholy Black Mass (12″ MLP)
Hells Headbangers
Sludgey, smooshy production, raw black/death metal… my ears are fatigued just trying to figure out what’s going on.

Protokult
No Beer In Heaven
Self Released
Folk/Pagan metal from Toronto.  Heavy, proggy catchy songs with that folky accordion/flutey/fiddle stuff going on, but yet, still metal and bouncy at the same time.
