New Stuff This Week…9/7/15

Iron Maiden
The Book of Souls
BMG
Aside from the Blaze Bayley era, the Maiden catalog is fairly strong… and now their last couple of albums have been pretty decent, but a 5 year layoff since the last one was long enough!  The new Maiden is upon us… and it’s well, 100% Iron Maiden.  Really they are their own metal sub-genre.  Great classic metal melodies, Bruce’s soaring siren-like vox and while I’m not sure I can break out all three guitars, I can tell something’s going on with a lot of guitars and of course… Steve Harris… the pulse of the band. It’s good!

Aftermath
Eyes of Tomorrow
self-released
This is a reissue of the 80’s/90’s Chicago thrash band Aftermath 1994.  There was some record label drama with the recording of this album/demos back in 1990 to where it didn’t really get sort of released til 1994… Well, here it is again self-released… A good classic thrashy sound with some melodic stuff too.

Slayer
Repentless
Nuclear Blast USA
Well, judging by the three tracks that are online, I can say, that yeah, this is sSlayer, it’s good and the newest track that was released “You Against You” shreds like a mofo.  Glad to see Slayer is still going at it and at a high level musically (you know, for Slayer… ie.  they aren’t pussing out)

Seven Witches
The Way Of T he Wicked
The ILS Group
Classic metal… the music is great, Jack Frost has it going on… the vocalist is fairly new (since 2012) and he’s good, there’s just nothing really unique or special going on.  It’s good classic metal though.

Masters Of Metal
From Worlds Beyond
Metalville Records
Kind of a classic thrash meets oh, maybe power metal a bit?  But not that boop boop boop singalong power metal, the power metal with some balls.

Hemlock
Mouth Of The Swine
Blue Curb Music
This is thrashy, deathy and a bit groove metal too.  I guess thrashy and groovin’ in the vein of Pro-Pain, but maybe a bit more heavy?  Either way it’s pretty cool stuff.

Scale the Summit
V
Prosthetic Records
The instrumental proggers are at it again… good groovin’ (no vox) prog metal.  Not too much different than their older stuff, but a new collection of laid back prog is always good.

JACKSON FIREBIRD
Shake The Breakdown
Napalm Records
A bit of a groovin’ stoner metal with a little bit of a southern fried glam metal thing going on too. (not bad for a couple of Aussies!) As I dig deeper, there’s a bit of a Monster Magnet feel too.

SHABDA
Pharmakon/Pharmakos
Argonauta Records
Two LONG (20+ mins!) of droney doom metal.  They call it “ritual drone doom”  I call it “no thank you.”

Kaiserreich
Cuore Nero
De Tenebrarum Principio
A doomy melodic black metal.  A good black metal sound, enough of some melodic stuff to keep it interesting… not breaking any ground, but nothing really stale either.  decent stuff.

HOWLS OF EBB
The Marrow Veil
I, Voidhanger Records
Some drony background music which gets into some raw black metal.  MOstly drony long boring stuff. (3 tracks)

Pyramids On Mars
Echos Cosmic
Self-Release (Asher)
This is a one man proggy instrumental metal band.  A good groove some great meedly guitar stuff and some spacy Rush-Like stuff going on too.

Speedtrap
Straight Shooter
Svart Records
Good driving classic sounding metal.  A little bit of an edge, otherwise, your traditional old school-ish “metal”. A little Motorhead, a little Maiden, that sort of thing.

Sabbath Assembly
Sabbath Assembly
Svart Records
Kind of a classic doomy throwback metal with female vocals. A Good groove classic Sabbathy sound (probably has something to do with their name, eh? )

Human Desolation
Mind Grind Paradigm
Label: Self Released (distributed by Nordavind Records / Plastic Head)
Melodic death metal… the good stuff.  A good deathy edge, music has a heavy black metal thing going on too… nice an brutal, but yet, some At The Gates type quality going on too.

Synapses
Devoutness
Cimmerian Shade Recordings
This is your basic brutal death metal… but yeah, not much basic about brutal death metal is there?  Lots going on, cookie monster vox, grindy guitars, freight train drumming… all the good stuff.

ARES
“Divine Creation”
Seaszy Rider
Almost an industral blackened thrash with some casio-esque keyboards going on (in a few parts)… yeah, it’d normally be weird, but the music is so heavy you can’t deny that it’s pretty cool. Recap… heavy yet a bit catchy brutal metal with some black metal tendencies

New Stuff This Week… 8/31/15

Nile
What Should Not Be Unearthed
Nuclear Blast Records
Well, Nile has always been pretty cool.  Sometimes they get a little bit prog/death or have some longer songs and drift a bit, but are still classic intense death metal. This album is a bit more concise, shorter songs and more straightforward.

Hammercult
Built For War
SPV/Steamhammer
This has a great heavy thrash element, but kicked up a notch and maybe a little bit of a death feel, but also some proggy melodic stuff… all while staying heavy and tr00.

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats
The Night Creeper
Rise Above
Some doomy stoner hard rock.  A bit raw in the production department but not too bad.

Baroness
“Chlorine & Wine”
Abraxan Hymns
Long track, a bit doomy and melodic… I’d have to say this would be a new stoner metal power ballad.

Once Human
The Life I Remember
earMusic
Melodic death metal… female fronted and with Logan Mader playing guitars.  Good abrasive female vox, a good groove, but still heavy and brutal too.

Burn Halo
Wolves Of War
eOne Entertainment
I’d have to say this is some modern metalcore type stuff.  Screamy vocals, clean vocals, that sort of “solid rock”  groove (reminds me of Disturbed a bit)

Amorphis
Under The Red Cloud
Nuclear Blast USA
In the early days of the Mosh Pit, the early albums from Amorphis were a staple… they got a bit more mainstream-ish (no growly vox!)  but have since returned a bit to form.  These pioneers of melodic death/black metal are back to keep it real and show who the masters are.  You’ve got the clean vox, the melody, the heavy stuff, the growly stuff too and even a little folk metal too.

My Dying Bride
Feel The Misery
Peaceville Records
Doomy melodic black metal.  album isn’t out til mid September, so we just have 2 songs here.  The 2nd one has all clean vox, first track is a bit heavier and has screamy vox.

Diemonds
Never Wanna Die
Napalm Records
Some nice hard rockin’ female fronted music going on here.  Catchy songs, but mostly of the hard rock more commercial friendly type of thing.

Ramming Speed
No Epitaphs
Prosthetic Records
Kind of a melodic death metal meets a metalcore.  Vocals are more of a screamy metalcore style, but them music has a bit more of a traditional metal/thrashy/melodic feel yet HEAVY. (oh, catchy too)

Quor
Human Paradigm
New Ocean
A thrashy mainstream metal thing… melodic more commercial sounding vocals, musically sort of a groovin’ thrash.

CHRISTIAN MISTRESS
To Your Death (Radio Promo)
Relapse Records
Just a two song sampler so far, but what I’m hearing is pretty damn good.  Catchy hard rockin’ female fronted stoner metal.  They keep the metal in stoner metal, great throwback vibe while staying heavy and modern sounding.

PIG DESTROYER
Prowler In The Yard Reissue
Relapse Records
Reissue of their album from 2001.  I am a bit late to the Pig Destroyer game… this old stuff was great too.  grindy brutal stuff.  Reissues are always a good excuse to bring back and play some cool classic stuff that people already knew and liked or maybe to get some new ears on it too.

Twitching Tongues
Disharmony – radio single
Metal Blade
Some melodic-ish death metal.  (one song)

Gomorrah
A Disaster’s Nightmare Single
Test Your Metal Records (Asher)
BRUTAL technical death metal!  (one track)  Looking forward to more!

RITO PROFANATORIO
GRIMORIOS E INVOCACIONES DESDE EL TEMPLO DE LA PERVERSION
Label: Dunkelheit Produktionen
Raw classic death metal with oh, I’d say a bit of black metal thrown in.  (Snare drum reminds me of St. Anger though… ugh)

Necromancy (Greece)
Ancient Wrath 12″ MLP
Nuclear War Now! Productions
Melodic, kind of proggy blackened doomy death metal…  yeah lots of genres covered in here (only 3 tracks)  The 3rd track is pretty raw though.

BENEATH THE STORM
Devil’s Village
Self Released
Sludgey doomy blackened/doom metal.  Reaaallly growly depressing vocals and music too.

CEMETERY LUST
Screams of the Violated (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Kind of a Slayer-esque metal thing… heavier than thrash, but not quite up into death or black metal… but really close.  Brutal Thrash?  Great stuff.

Broken Flesh
Broken Flesh
Luxor Records
Fast brutal and a little bit grindy death metal.  Good production, heavy brutal sound with decen production and yeah a bit of a groove too.

Cretus
Dux Mea Lux
Pavement Entertainment
A thrashy melodic classic metal thing going on… with some hints of doomy 70’s metal (you know, kinda like Ghost)

CHAOS FRAME
Paths to Exile
Nightmare Records
This is pretty much your standard power metal, but then, hey, it’s actually more than that, we’re pretty proggy, maybe a bit like some older Dream Theater without so much wanking.

Black Tongue
The Unconquerable Dark
Century Media
Doomy death metal with a little bit of djent and black metal too.

Dalkhu
Descend… into Nothingness LP
Iron Bonehead
This might be some decent death metal… but… sounds like a cassette tape.  c’mon man!

Nechochwen
Heart of Akamon
Nordvis Produktion
Mostly some decent black metal, but this gets more into some cool prog metal while being all blackened death/black metal too.

Abominor (Iceland)
Opus: Decay
Invictus
Classic black metal sounding stuff.  Two long tracks.

Altarage
MMXV 7″ EP
Iron Bonehead
2 songs of blackened death metal.  A bit raw and straigtforward.

Morbid Slaughter
A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death
Boris Records / Inti Records
Classic heavy thrash music with black metal vox…and it works pretty good in my opinion.  Has this classic old school metal feel but this creepy screamy vocals which make it something that I haven’t really heard before.

SIMPLE LIES
Let It Kill
Bakerteam Records
A glam-ish stoner metal thing, music has a groovin’ stoner hard rock with an 80’s metal voice.

MIDNIGHT / SHITFUCKER
Split 7″
Hells Headbangers
The Midnight track is some brutal fast, in your face blackened death.  Good stuff.  The Shitfucker track is more or less raw black metal.

Marty Friedman
“Inferno” Bonus Tracks
Prosthetic Records
Great classic metal on the first track, the second track is a lot of metal guitar noodling.  All great stuff though.

Black .44
No Blanks
Inverse
Stoner metal with a groove… So not quite “groove metal” but maybe “groove hard rock”

Barbarian Fist
The Whorelord Cometh
Voidcaller Records
Psychedelic stoner hard rock.  there’s a cool groove going on here, a bit melodic, LONG songs, but they seem to be interesting throughout.

BARYON
Inauguration
Dark Tunes
Doomy stoner metal with some long melodic passages and stuff.

New Stuff This Week… 8/24/15

Disturbed
Immortalized
Warner Brothers
As with the Motorhead below… Disturbed know what they do… catchy hard rock stuff that a lot of people will like. The hiatus probably did them a little good.  The band members all went and did their own thing or took time off and came back all recharged instead of just churning out another “ok” album.  This one is yeah, “ok” but actually pretty good as Disturbed goes. It might be a little bit overproduced, but it’s still crisp and clean.

Ghost
Meliora
Loma Vista
What can we say about Ghost.  The 3rd album here.  I wasn’t a huge fan of the second album… well, I can say right now that I’m a huge fan of this one.  The songs all just have a big huge sound (like the bass drum is 5 feet wide), the music is right on with their throwback sound, but yet modern and yeah, I use this word too much, catchy.  You’ll be headbanging along then just shake your head at how it sounds so familiar but yet still new and fresh.  This one is up there for one of the best of the year in my book.

Kobra and the Lotus
Words of the Prophets EP
Titan Music
Well, I had the single for SPirit of Radio a week or two ago, now we got the full EP.  “Lay it On The Line” “Sign of the Gypsy Queen” and others… so yeah Canadian band doing Candadian band covers. They don’t deviate too far from the style of the orginal, so it’s all pretty straightforward, but good stuff.

The Devil Wears Prada
Space EP
Rise Records
Heavy and catchy metalcore… first new stuff from these guys in a few years.  I can’t say anything is too groundbreaking here… just some good quality melodic metalcore without getting all wussy.

Wolfheart
Shadow World
Spinefarm Records
Doomy melodic death metal, catchy riffs and maybe a bit of a viking metal feel too.

The Sword
High Country
Razor & Tie
One of the better stoner metal bands around these days.  Great meaty catchy stoner metal (hard rock) anthems going on all over the place here.

WASP
Radio Single “Last Runaway”
Napalm Records
Been a while since I’ve heard some new WASP… This one isn’t quite as over the top as their older stuff, but some decent traditional WASP-ed metal… catchy chorus and song and stuff.

Deafheaven
“Brought To The Water” (single)
Epitaph
I guess I missed the boat on their first album, as it made a bunch of folks’ best of the year.  This single is some decent black metal with some melodic, more accessible doomy jam type stuff.

Blood Divisions
Blood Divisions
Metal Blade Records
Kind of a traditional metal feel with Jericho’s vocals, but also doomy proggy metal thing too… This is a supergroup thing going on here… “BLOOD DIVISIONS features a “who’s who” of metal musicians, including Chris Jericho, Dave Austin, Ralph Santola, Terry Butler, Greg Gall, Bill Owen, John Mahoney and Ben Meyer.  This EP is just 2 cover songs with $$ benefitting a charity.

Motorhead
Bad Magic
UDR Music GMBH
Motorhead doesn’t mess around, they (Lemmy) knows what their deal is and they keep on doing it…. and good for them.  We only have 2 songs so far, but they sound like Motorhead and not deviating from their formula… good stuff.

Soilwork
The Ride Majestic
Nuclear Blast USA
Being a Soilwork fanboy I knew I’d like this right off the bat… but really it didn’t grab me right away, while it’s great, it almost is “too much” melody and “too much” heavy going on all at once, but really on a couple listens, this is pretty awesome stuff.  Takes a bit to absorb all the great stuff going on.

Pop Evil
Up
eOne Entertainment
The word “pop” in their band name to me says “pop” metal, or maybe just pop hard rock… so yeah, all catch and commercial-ish.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s not really for our show.

Defeater
Abandoned
Epitaph Records
Hardcore/metalcore… a bit of a raw pissed off thing.  (I just have one song, pretty good though.)

Renaissance Of Fools
Spring
Metalville Records
A sort of prog hard rock type thing… started up from a guy that was in PAin of Salvation… so it’s along those lines… not really getting too heavy, but not being all soft prog rock.  There’s a heavy feeling, but really just a prog hard/rock type thing with a pinch of power metal maybe.

Vinnie Jonez Band
Supernothing
Narcotica
Hard rockin’ stuff… fairly straightforward a little bit of an edge, maybe like a Kings X or something on the hard rock side of things, but probably not really stuff for the Mosh Pit.

Plaguewielder
Chambers Of Death CD
Horror Pain Gore Death
This one is a bit out there… musically, it’s a bit of a doomy melodic post-metal type thing… vocally it’s got scary creepy black metal-ish (raw produced) vocals.  I guess what’s good about it is there aren’t a whole lot of vocals on the album (just skimming through)

FUCK THE FACTS
Desire Will Rot
Noise Salvation
Raw deathy metal but with some thrashy punk type stuff going on too.  Songs are quick and to the point.  Some have a bit of a slower dooomy melodic thing going on as well

Riwen
The Cold
Hardfall
A good metal/hardcore band you know like a Hatebreed… but maybe a bit heavier?  Some cool catchy stuff with a groove too.

Grim Vision
War Agony
Bastardized Recordings
Raw blackened thrashy death/grind stuff.

Simulacrum
Sky Divided
Inverse Records
A power metal thing with a bit of that “epic” feel. There’s a bit of a prog metal thing where they get a bit more heavy.

Embassy Of Silence
Verisimilitude
Inverse
Female fronted hard rock, probably a bit too commercial-ish for us.

Frank Palangi
Break These Chains (Single)
Label: Frank Palangi
Decent hard rock.  Mostly “solid rock” with some good driving riffage and guitar work… but probably something not quite mosh pit material.

Rifftera
Pitch Black
Inverse
Heavy catchy melodic thrashy almost death metal.  I mean with a name like Rifftera, you kind of think a Riffy Pantera… but it’s more of a melodic death thing.  Great stuff.

Creeping
Revenant LP
Iron Bonehead
This is some pretty decent classic black metal.  The growly vox, cold guitars some melodic stuff, mostly evil sounding, etc.  Good stuff.

THEOLOGIAN
A Means By Which To Break The Surface Of The Real
Nothing Under The Sun
Not sure what to say about this… noisy doomy post experimental post doom post-something.  No thanks.

Thera Roya
Unraveling
Label: Self-Released
Doomy stoner metal… just 3 long tracks and a lot of sludge too.

SPEEDWHORE
THE FUTURE IS NOW
WITCHES BREW
Fast intense black metal.  SOme raw production, but the music has a little bit of a thrashy element to it too.

Designs Of Chaos
The Darkest Storm
Self Released
Thrashy groove death metal type stuff.

My Silent Wake
Damnatio Memoriae
House of Ashes
I guess this would qualify as melodic death metal… lots of melodic metal stuff, but extreme vocals and some heavier deathy stuff too… and of course, yeah, that thrashy stuff too.

Nihilosaur
Icebreaker Hope
Self-Released
Some electronic stuff in the interludes throws me off a bit, but the “real” tracks are melodic hardcore-ey death stuff.

So Hideous
Yesteryear (Single)
Prosthetic Records
Post melodic metal.

New Stuff This Week…8/17/15

Butcher Babies
Take It Like A Man
Century Media
Musically, from what I recall, this seems heavier than the last one.  Catchy, and yeah, brutal in parts.

Iron Maiden
“Speed of Light” (single)
BMG
A good classic Maiden sound.  Bruce is back at his classic metal “siren” voice.  Everything else just sounds as Maiden should… it’s not really too technical or anything, but I’m sure with more listens you’ll be able to pick out more and more each time.  Can’t wait for more!!

MYRKUR
M
Relapse Records
Some brutal yet melodic folky black metal

PUBLICIST UK
Forgive Yourself (NA Promo)
Relapse Records
A doomy goth metal

Bullet For My Valentine
Venom
RCA
Heavier commercial metal… catchy radio friendly songs with the clean singy vox mixed with some screamy yelly stuff too.

DEAD LETTER CIRCUS
AESTHESIS
The End
A more or less commercial hard rock thing, maybe a bit proggy like a Karnivool or Fair to Midland type thing.

Rivers of Nihil
Monarchy
Metal Blade Records
Technical death metal… brutal and yet a bit proggy and catchy too.  We loved the last album from these guys and they are up to snuff for their new album too

Kobra and the Lotus
“Spirit of Radio” (Single)
Titan
Covering a Rush song can be a slippery slope.  These guys/gal handle it great!  (This is the first song from an upcoming all covers EP)

Dark Sermon
The Oracle
eOne Entertainment
A sort of melodic death/black metal thing, I guess the closest comparison I could make is maybe older Opeth.  Proggy melodies and brutal death metal.

Pentagram
Curious Volume
Peaceville Records
Doom masters are back… this album is catchy groovin’ doomy stoner metal with some great melodies and stuff too.

Chris Caffery
Your Heaven Is Real
Metalville Records
Chris has always had some decent classic sounding metal releases, a bit like Savatage, but maybe with a heavier edge to it.  This album follows the same formula… good catchy classic metal songs… but the production is a bit mushy… still good enough though.

Ahab
The Boats Of Glen Carring
Napalm Records
Some long songed doomy metal with a bit of a proggy hard rock tendency but with some harsh vocals too.

Toseland
Renegade
Metalville Records
Fronted by a world superbike champion, James Toseland, this is some melodic hard rock stuff… vocals are clean and sung with a pretty good range and sound.  Decent catchy hard rock, but maybe not quite for the Mosh Pit.

Elysian Fields
Adelain DLP/CD
Nuclear War Now! Productions
Mostly black metal, a bit thrashy, and melodic too, oh hey, there’s a bit of a death metal thing going on too.

CRISALIDA
Terra Ancestral
Mechanix Records
Female fronted proggy hard rock en Espanol.

Kyy
Travesty Of Light
Saturnal Records
Only 4 tracks, but brutal black metal throughout!

Necrodium
Remnants
Breaking Wheel Productions
Your decent meat and potatoes death metal.

Vardan
Between the Fog and Shadows
Moribund
3 long tracks of crappy black metal.

Dead Lord
Heads Held High
Century Media
a 70’s throwback… sounding a bit like some Sabbath/Ghost -ish.

Oceans Of Slumber
Blue (EP)
Century Media
a Covers EP.  Female fronted prog rock doing up their way of songs from Candlemass, Led Zep, Emperor… mostly doomy

KALEDON
Chapter IV: Twilight Of The Gods
Scarlet
Your classic epic power metal vocals over some heavier than normal power metal.

Barrows
Swine Race
Inverse
Brutal death metal with a little bit of grind going on.  pretty good stuff.

Wombbath
Downfall Rising
Dark Descent
Death metal with a brutal groove and leaning just a touch into the black metal territory.

BONEHUNTER
Evil Triumphs Again (CD, LP, TAPE)
Hells Headbangers
A bit of a classic black metal thing

SCYTHIAN (UK)
Hubris in Excelsis (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Fast heavy brutal death metal maybe leaning into some melodic blackened death metal.  good stuff.

Nekro Drunkz
Absolute Filth
Moribund
Kind of a Anal Cunt type thing, fast, punky death metal with “funny” misogynistic song titles

Vaee Solis
Adversarial Light
Signal Rex / Mordgrimm
A bit of a doomy black metal… sludgey slow down tempo stuff with screamy abrasive vocals.

Dogbane
When Karma Comes Calling
Heaven and Hell Records
Standard metal with clean vox, a little bit of an Iron Maiden feel… production is a bit raw and “local” sounding.

Stryper
2 song sampler
Classic heavy metal from Stryper two heavy songs

Re-Armed
Total Lack of Communication
Self-Release
Brutal thrashy metal.  catchy heavy with abrasive vox, cool heavy guitars maybe some good melodies and stuff.

Spock’s Beard
The Oblivion Particle
InsideOut
With lineup changes throughout their career, this album is pretty solid.  Even with vocalist changes and drummer changes, they still have a solid core
