New Stuff This Week… 8/10/15

Act of Defiance
Birth and the Burial
Metal Blade Records
Broderick and Drover left Megadeth then they formed this band… with a more extreme vocalist than they’re used to playing with… kind of a cool contrast to hear these guys playing what Mustaine wanted all those years to do what they please and that they came up with something extreme.  This is more or less some extreme thrash type stuff with harsh vox.  Great catchy and brutal stuff going on here!  (don’t forget about Matt Bachand from Shadows Fall moving to Bass for this band, and the vocalist guy from Scar the Martyr

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats
“Waiting For Blood” (Single)
Rise Above
Melodic stoner metal… the mix is a bit tinny, hopefully the full length sounds better.

CROWN
Natron
Candlelight
Not to be confused with THE Crown.   This is an industrial doomy sludge band.  So yeah, it’s sludgey doomy and has that electronic industrial feel to it.

The Oxford Coma
Paris is Mine
Self-Released
Sort of a proggy doom stoner metal thing going on.

Mindless Self Indulgence
“Personal Jesus” (Single)
Metropolis
MSI has a unique sound, it carries on to this album of stuff from an album called PINK which was rumored, but never released.

Soulfly
Archangel
Nuclear Blast Entertainment
A lot of Soulfly albums have come and gone… they’ve all been pretty good.  Seems as though Soulfly is becoming more like Van Halen.  The drummer is now his son Zyon, bass is Igor Jr…. and well, there’s still Marc Rizzo to round things out.  This album is a bit short, but all the songs have that signature Soulfly sound… heavy thrash with a bit of that Sepultura tribal groove to it.

Archer
Culling The Weak
Metalville Records
A bit of a standard metal thing with some groove going on.  So not full on groove metal nor thrashy… just straight up heavy metal.

Battlecross
Rise to Power
Metal Blade Records
Catchy thrashy extreme metal.  With no real 3″ of Blood or Skeletonwitch around for this heavier than thrash trash to compete with, these guys are the real deal (they were before too)  It’s just that they stand a bit more ahead of the game now and this album cements it. Crisp production, heavy, brutal, catchy, groovin’ all at the same time.  If you call yourself a metalhead you better like this.  If not, turn in your card.

BLASPHMACHINE
SALVATION
Label: Dunkelheit Produktionen
Brutal blackened death metal a bit grindy too

Istengoat
Atlas Shrugged LP
Blood Harvest
Some good quality blackened deathmetal.  Yup… It’s fast brutal death metal with a bit of that black metal intensity and “cold” sound in the guitar tone.  Vox are mostly cookie monster with the screamy growls thrown in here and there too.  Good stuff.

VHS
Hi-Fi Horror (Uncut Edition) Digital Album
Horror Pain Gore Death
Thrashy and raw but a bit on the extreme side… screamy and growly vox.  Some cool melodic guitar stuff too, but not so much that it gets all meedly or less “heavy”  Good stuff!

Human Desolation
Mind Grind Paradigm
Self Released (distributed by Nordavind Records / Plastic Head)
Heavy catchy melodic death.  Good groove, good production…

KILLING GANDHI
CINEMATIC PARALLELS
CRIME RECORDS
Your standard Brutal metal…  a good chugga chugga thing with some melodic death going on.

GROUNDLESS
ADRENALINE
CRIME RECORDS
A bit hardcore, a bit modern metalcore with the emo-ish vox.  Melodic metal tendencies in the music.

ANTROPOFAGO
Æra Dementiæ
Kaotoxin Records
We’ve got some quality death metal going on here. Brutal as hell with some good guitar work, vox are barked out with some ferocity

Antagonist Zero
No Tears
Inverse Records
Melodic doom with some death metal stuff going on too.

New Stuff This Week… 8/3/15

Chemical Burn
Raining Anvils
MegaSonic
A heavy groovin’ thrash leaning towards some death metal.

Saint Asonia
Better Place
RCA
4 August 2015
So I’m reading the description of this before listening… members are “ex Three Days Grace guy, Staind guy, Eye Empire guy, Finger Eleven guy…”  and now I think, how could this possibly be something for the Mosh Pit?  Okay, now I’m hitting play… yup, as expected, watered down commercial hard rock.  Might be good for some people.  Not for the guys that do this radio show.

Clutch
“X-Ray Visions”
Weathermaker
Great song, 100% Clutch going on. Catchy groovin heavy stoner metal rock n roll.  This is one you want to listen to over and over and sing along.

CATTLE DECAPITATION
The Anthropocene Extinction
Metal Blade
Technical, grindy, death metal… this thing and these guys are the real deal.  Outright brutality but with some grooves, technicality and wow.

Black Fast
Terms Of Surrender
eOne Entertainment
A heavy thrashy modern metal thing… big wall of sound production, aggressive melodic death feel going on. Great stuff!

Fear Factory
Genexux
Nuclear Blast Entertainment
Well, it’s Fear Factory, and on first listen, it actually does have a bit of a Demanufacture era vibe and feel to it.  Catchy harsh and clean vox, classic FF riffs and drumming and overall sound.  I think most fans will be pleased.  Nothing groundbreaking, but not pissing on their legacy either… just keeping it up well.

RUSSKAJA
Peace, Love & Russian Roll
Napalm Records
Kind of a folky polka ska metal…from Russia.  While fun and fresh, it’s still not quite metal.  Maybe we’ll throw it on for a fun track.

SPACE MIRRORS
Stella Polaris
Label: Atomic Age Records
Gothy doom stuff with maybe a little bit of prog rock going on.

The Green River Burial
Blight
Bastardized Recordings
Just two tracks of pretty decent brutal core stuff.  Track two gets into a little bit of more melodic stuff… but we’re still solid brutal.

Throaat
Black Speed
Invictus
A raw thrashy black metal, more on the side of thrashy evilness.

WINDHAND
Two Urns (Single)
Relapse Records
Old school grungy doomy stuff

Fallen Angels
World In Decay
Cyberdyne Records
Melodic modern thrashy stuff.

Saritap
Sorcerers of the Seven Gods TAPE
Iron Bonehead
Raw old school creepy black metal

CIANIDE
Death, Doom and Destruction (CD, DLP)
Hells Headbangers
Good ol classic death metal.  Chugging riffs, cookie monster vox and a catchy groove.

InAeona
Force Rise The Sun
Prosthetic Records
Female fronted atmospheric stuff with some metal tendencies, an electronic feel and catchy stuff too.  Not sure if we’ll find room on the Mosh Pit for this.

Krisiun
Forged In Fury
Century Media
Brutal catchy death metal.  These guys know what they are doing and don’t fuck around.  Heavy with some of that Brazilian influence thrown in there too.

Enabler
Fail To Feel Safe
Century Media
Aside from the drama in the media with this band, this album is a pretty solid hardcore tinged metal thing.

HIBRIA
Self-Titled
Test Your Metal Records
A little thrashy musically, but the rest?  Well, a bit of a modern power metal mixed with thrash feel.  Pretty decent stuff.

DEIPHAGO
Into the Eye of Satan (CD, LP, TAPE)
Hells Headbangers
Raw old school black metal with a little bit of a thrash thing going on.

BARBATOS (Japan)
Straight Metal War (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Raw thrashy punky stuff.  A bit old school sounding, catchy in parts, kinda fun to listen to.  Some good classic metal with thrashy stuff, a little bit extreme in parts too.

Majestic Downfall
…When Dead
Pulverised Records
Doomy blackened death with realllly long songs.

Casey Skye
A Careful Distraction
Imminence Records
Modern metalcore with that emo vox and bouncy metalcore stuff… screamy breakdowns and stuff too.  Get those karate moves practiced up.

OPERATION: MINDCRIME
Re-Inventing the Future Single
Frontiers Music srl
This is the Geoff Tate “project”  And it pretty much sounds like the same direction that Ryche and Tate’s other stuff has been in.  It’s decent, but there’s just no real spark.  This track is trying too hard to sound like Empire.

CRIMSON SUN
Towards the Light
Maple Metal
It’s been a while since we got something from our friends to the north, Maple Metal Records.  Glad to have something back… this is some more or less prog/power metal with female vocals.

Abandoned Dreams
Home
Label: Self-Release
Some long doomy stuff.  It’s not really “post metal”  but it is some doom that goes on, but has some good melody.  Just 3 tracks.

Noctum
Until Then…Until the End
Metal Blade Records
Catchy 70’s throwback stoner-ish metal.  Gosh there was such a phase a year or two ago of that 70’s throwback metal and it went away FAST.  kinda nice to hear something again.  these swedes know what they’re doing.

Trivium
“Silence In The Snow” (single)
Roadrunner
Classic trivium going on here… might be a little “over produced”  It just doesn’t have any breathing room.

New Stuff This Week…7/27/15

Agent Fresco
Destrier
Long Branch
Well I’d have to say while this is a decent rock type release, it’s not really “metal”  A little bit proggy and maybe even pop-modern rock type stuff.  Not quite sure this has a place on the Mosh Pit.

Lamb of God
VII: Sturm Und Drang
Epic
Now here we go!   While these guys haven’t done anything bad since their inception, some albums have been better than others.  This is one that’s better than others.  With everything that’s happened, it seemed to have charged them up.  A big ramp up with some singles and videos, Randy’s book, etc.  This is a great payoff to finally hear the full album.  it’s on!

Xandria
Fire & Ashes (EP)
Napalm Records
Some modern sounding power metal with female vox.  Heavier than most “femetal” stuff musically, but the vox are in the opera style. So it’s cool for fans of the more epic femetal type stuff.  (and there’s a cover of Meatloaf’s “I’d Do Anything For Love”  haha

Murder FM
Happy Never After
Pavement Music
Kind of a Modern metal think with a little bit of a Marilyn Manson music feel with some guitar driven keyboard stuff.  Vox are mostly clean but with that Manson style going on too.

Kataklysm
Of Gods And Ghosts
Nuclear Blast USA
You want good death metal?  This is the band right here.  Brutal, catchy, technical, heavy, crisp production… this is it.  These guys never disappoint.  This one has a little bit of melodic stuff going on here and there too.

AGUSA
Agusa 2
The Laser’s Edge
A couple of about 20 minute long instrumental tracks of good ol (psychedelic) prog rock.  (not metal)

PERVERSOR
Anticosmocrator (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Brutal blackened death metal… a bit of a thrashy thing, but pretty much fast, evil black metal tinted death metal.  Good n Raw.

OBSIDIAN
Time Erodes
Self Released
Deathy thrashy metal with a bit of a groove.

Iron Kingdom
Ride For Glory
Self-Released
Classic metal in the lines of Priest and Maiden.  Cool guitar work, great over the top vox and a full sound that you just don’t get to hear much anymore.

Barshasketh
Ophidian Henosis
Blut & Eisen Productions
Petty good melodic black metal

My Hollow
On Borrowed Time
Self-Release
Modern metal, with a bit of a thrashy catchy vibe.  Screamy vocals, some melodic stuff going on, almost crossing into a feeling of melodic death musically.

Mastiphal
For A Glory of All Spirits, Rise for Victory LP/CD
Nuclear War Now! Productions
Melodic proggy black metal.  There’s some consistent keyboard action, but the cold guitars and scary black metal vox are all there with the blast beats too.  good production rounds this out to be decent stuff.

Shroud of the Heretic
Unorthodox Equilibrium
Iron Bonehead
Some classic doomy melodic black metal with looonnng sonnnnggss..

Kore Rozzik
Rock Star [single]
Self Release
Just a classic hard rock catchy type song.

Deathstorm
The Gallows EP
Dying Victims Productions
They say it’s thrash, but I say it’s heavier than that even… maybe a blackened thrash type thing but with some Slayer vibes going on.  Cool stuff from Austria.

Dresden
Dresden
Famined Records
Melodic prog rock type stuff.  Maybe not even metal… yeah, not metal, but ok if you like Stephen Wilson type stuff.

HYBRID NIGHTMARES
The Third Age
Self Released
Well, this is the 3rd EP of this series… Same stuff as the others… It’s got elements of melodic death, thrash, and harsh black metal-like vocals.  Pretty cool catchy stuff going on too.

GOTH
GOTH
Manifest Record
Hummmm  what to expect from a band called Goth.  Well, yeah, I guess it’s a little Goth.  but I’d say it’s a bit more in the femetal genre with some gothy stuff going on too.  I’m sure it could be compared a bit to Lacuna Coil with a male/female vocal pairing with a standard metal type music backing.

FULLY CONSUMED
Incendium
Art Consumed Records
This is one of those albums that just starts off with a bang to set the tone.  No “intro” No spoken word movie quote.  Just brutal death metal from the first note.

To The Pain
7
Self-Released
A bit of a raw light thrash thing with vox that sound a bit like Dave Mustaine in parts, otherwise it’s a little growly.

Pray of North
Bloodline (Single)
Inverse
Catchy modern metal (vocals are in english but with a strong euro accent or something)

LYNCH MOB
Rebel
Frontiers Music srl
Great classic hard rock… still with original singler Oni Logan.  Catchy songs with a throwback feel, but still new sounding.

Joe Satriani
Shockwave Supernova
Legacy Recordings
Well, Joe has quite the lineup on this new album. Bryan Bellor, Marco Minneman and Mike Keneally… and yeah, Joe himself.  This isn’t messing around.  Just the first song/title track is enough to sell you on this thing.  Classic Joe solos and music, but really stepping it up with the other musicians on this.

CORNERS OF SANCTUARY
Prelude To War (The Japan Demo)
Self Released (Online Metal Promo)
Some classic metal mixed in with a bit of thrash… not too bad.

Atreyu
“Long Live” (single)
Spinefarm
