New Stuff This Week… 6/1/15

Leprous
The Congregation
Inside Out
Catchy proggy hard rock not really venturing too much into the metal realm, but maybe just getting into Tool-like territory.  Good prog metal stuff through.

Lorna Shore
Psalms
Density
we had the single a few weeks ago, now the full length.  Still great brutalcore stuff.  Nowadays, you almost expect this cool brutalcore to get into the whiney emo vox.  Not here.  100% brutal.

Nekrogoblikon
Heavy Meta
Mystery Box
Same as the Lorna Shore, we had the single a while back… now the full.  Catchy heavy thrashy melodic death stuff, reminds me a bit of Zimmer’s Hole.

The Darkness
Last of Our Kind
Kobalt
Fun high screamy vox’ed classic hard rock.  I think everyond kinda knows about The Darkness… they’re still at it.  Nothing too groundbreaking here, just some cool hard rockin’ party music.

Battlecross
Not Your Slave (Single)
Metal Blade
Take Thrash, turn it up a notch… heavy headbangin’ metal riffs galore and yeah, great stuff.  I want more!

Paradise Lost
The Plague Within
Century Media
I used to like these guys, then they got pretty soft (in my opinion)… now with more years and me being more open… they have kinda moved away from 100% gothy doom and into some more melodic death in addition to their gothy doom.  Great stuff and there are actually lots of dynamics keeping it all interesting.

My Sleeping Karma
Moksha
Napalm Records
Doomy instrumental stuff… kinda stoner, kinda just laid-back doomy rock.

BulletBoys
Elefante
Cleopatra Records
Not sure if they’ll ever top or live up to Smooth Up In Ya and their 80’s hey day.. but hey, what can you say.  The band is basically only Marq Torien… but really at this point in a career, if the only original member is the singer, I think you’re doing ok, right?   This album is chock full of classic hard rock songs

Helloween
My God-Given Right
Nuclear Blast Records
You know what you’re going to get with this band… yeah, they pretty much helped invent power metal and yup, that’s pretty much what we have here.  Decent sing-along german power metal.  The current lineup has been solid for over 10 years now.

Distant Sun
Dark Matter
Metalism Records
Kind of a catchy thrash along the lines of Iced Earth or Annihilator.

EBONILLUMINI
Arktos
Wickerman Recordings
A doomy chaotic atmospheric “something”  not sure what to say other than, oh, “experimental?”  sure, we’ll go with that.

OBESE
Kali Yuga
June 1st, 2015
Argonauta Records
Stoner metal… catchy riffs going on, a bit of a doomy feel, some abrasive vocals but not growled… sort of scream/sung.

AWE / VACANTFIELD / END
“Moerae” (split album)
Ill Damnation Productions
One track from each band here, each coming in about at 17 minutes.  Not sure if their just one track or all of their tracks just merged into one mp3… but Awe seems a bit of a doomy black metal, Vacanfield is melodic death/black metal and so is End.  All are decent melodic black/death metal.

TEETHGRINDER
Misanthropy
Lifeforce
Grindy death/thrash metal.

Coathanger Abortion
Observations of Humanity
Comatose Music
With a band name like this, I was expecting some brutal death metal.  I was right.  A bit raw on the production side, but this is your meat and potatoes cookie monster death metal

Kastasyde
Gnosis
Self Release
Melodic death, good production a bit proggy musically in parts too.

Caustic Method
The Virus
Pavement Entertainment
A bit of a modern metal thing, like thrashy, almost Five Finger Death Punch stuff… it’s heavy, catchy, but just has a bit of a commercial feel to it.  Decent stuff.

ANGAKOK
Angakok
Satanath Records
Doomy stoner metal

Cerebellion
Album Name: Regeneration
Self Released
A sort of proggy metal thing, mostly a little bit slower and melodic, but also poking a bit into sounding like Tool.

Encyrcle
Encyrcle
Unspeakable Axe Records
Trashy metal, catchy riffs, some classic metal and old school big metal screamy vox going on too.

TRIXTER
Human Era
Frontiers Music
New music from BulletBoys and Trixter this week?  WTF!?  Well… This is more of what they do best, catchy hard rockin’ stuff.  Sounds pretty good, vox are on par with some of the old stuff too.  This is fun to listen to.

Riverland
Spring
Inverse Records
I wasn’t sure if I was listening to the massage music channel on satellite radio or if I was reviewing metal releases.  Needless to say… this isn’t metal, and why am I even typing about it instead of just deleting it?

THE UGLY
Decreation
ViciSolum Productions
Swedish blackened death metal.  Good stuff, heavy, brutal, yet catchy in some parts too.

Possession (Belgium)
1585-1646
Iron Bonehead / Invictus
Old school screamy black metal.

My Life’s Despair
Invoked with Passion and Pain
Self-Released
Gothy black/doom metal with some screamy vocals, female vocals and growly stuff too. This one hits on a lot of metal genres and seems to do it alright. Worth checking out.

Far Beyond the Sunrise
Far Beyond the Sunrise
Famined Records
I’d call this brutal-core.  Heavy almost math metal sounding stuff, but for the most part, just getting into some metalcore that’s extra heavy.

Fragile Existence
Cataclysms and Beginnings
Self released
Melodic Death Metal, nothing really remarkable, other than it’s good stuff.

Decomposing Entity
So It Begins
Perennity Records
Good death metal with a bit of a black metal thing going on too… very brutal sounding

New Stuff This Week… 5/25/15

Armored Saint
Win Hands Down
Metal Blade Records
Well, we got the full album now, and it’s just what you’d expect, great classic metal and how can you go wrong with this band, and especially with John Bush singing?  Great catchy riffs, melodies and just all around great metal.

We Butter The Bread With Butter
Weider Geil!
AFM
Kind of a metalcore, and maybe even nu-metal, with some electronic static x/rammstein type stuff going on too… Overall, it’s good and heavy and catchy.

Turbowolf
Two Hands
Spinefarm
kind of a stoner metal or commercial-ish metal.  Catchy, great riffs, clean vox, maybe a little bit proggy.

Anti-Flag
American Spring
Spinefarm
Poppy punk hard rock

Cattle Decapitation
Manufactured Extinct (Single)
Metal Blade Records
First new stuff in three years! (doesn’t seem that long).  Intro starts off a bit slow, but then BAM… we’re good.  Heavy, grindy and in your face fucking brutal shit man.  Yeah.

White House Burning
I Am Hatred
WHB Entertainment
On one hand, it sounds like some just standard metal, but deeper in, there’s some cool thrashy and heavy moments too.

(Tony Gabriele’s) Orbynot
Without A Trace
Independent
Standard metal with a bit of thrash and female vocals… a bit sung/raspy… not growly or opera-ey.

Our Transfixion
Our Transfixion
Independent
This is one of those bands that’s pretty cool. Brutal, catchy metalcore stuff with good melodies yet heavy too but then…. whiney vox in a chorus that just i dunno… ruins it for me.

COLD CELL
Lowlife
Avantgarde Music
Release Date: 25 May 2015
Genre: Dark Black Metal | Country: Switzerland
So yeah, the genre says it all… it’s a classic black metal, has a dark evil feel, maybe along the lines of a Satyricon in style and heaviness.

MARUTA
Remain Dystopian (Radio Promo)
Relapse Records
Fast Grindy death metal.  Just two short tracks, but it’s good stuff with no fucking around.

SKINLESS
Only The Ruthless Remain (Radio Promo)
Relapse Records
Just a single so far, but this is sick brutal death metal like they’ve always done.  Can’t wait to hear more.

Ashbringer
Vcant
Avantgarde Music
Classic sounding black metal, a bit doomy and depressing overall, with moments of blast beatty black metal.

EXXILES
“Oblivion”
Nightmare Records
Standard metal with proggy thrash elements

Amestigon
Thier
W.T.C.Productions
Doomy black metal, but this actually gets going and heavy in parts.

Cult Of Endtime
In Charnel Lights
Svart Records
Blackened death metal with groove.  Brutal stuff a bit down tempo in parts, lots of meaty riffs, abrasive vox… pretty cool stuff.

Autokrator
Autokrator
Iron Bonehead
Wall of black/death metal noise.  hard to really even tell what’s going on here.

Somehow Jo!
Satans Of Swing
Inverse Records
Reminds me a little bit of Kings X or Galactic Cowboys in heaviness and style… Melodic hard rock stuff with some melodies

Impurity
Into the Ritual Chamber
Greyhaze Records
A groove thrashy thing… but with vocals that are more in a black metal voice style… interesting mix

Katechon
Coronation LP/CD
Nuclear War Now! Productions
Good brutal blackened death metal.  Plus it just sounds evil.

YGODEH
Inside The womb Of Horizonless Dystopia
YGH
Cool catchy death metal from Latvia. Cool riffs

Druzhina

Doomy blackened death metal

New Stuff This Week…5/18/15

Lamb of God
“Still Echoes” (Single)
Epic
Well, we got the first single from Lamb of God… and it’s great!  You know what this band sounds like, this track captures it all, and Randy’s vox are top notch and 100% abrasive.  Sounds like he’s gargling gravel and it’s awesome. Catchy and brutal.

Between the Buried and Me
The Coma Machine & Memory Palace – radio singles
Metal Blade Records
Well, we already had a single for Memory Palace, now we have one for Coma Machine… and they are just the new kings of Prog… there I said it.  Not quite as brutal as they used to be in the past… now they seem to be in full on prog metal mode.

Coal Chamber
Rivals
Napalm Records
I always thought Coal Chamber was alright, lots of catchy tunes with bass and stuff… kind of like a Poor man’s Korn back in the day, but with their own unique sound… now here we are again, after a bunch of Devildriver records and back to Coal Chamber for Dez (for now)  So as much as I’d love it to be heavy like Devildriver, this is a pretty striaghtforward more-like metalcore type stuff… a more mature Coal Chamber too I guess.  It does have that coal chamber sound, but more grown up.

Titans Eve
Chasing The Devil
Self-Release
PRetty cool proggy viking type metal. Good thrashy stuff going on, a good amon amarth melodic death thing too.

Addicted
Addicted
G Smith Music
Melodic hard rock type stuff.

Weedeater
Goliathan
Season of Mist
Some super down tempo fat meaty sludgy stoner metal, while a bit too slow/down tempo for what I prefer, this has something dark and “metal” enough to keep me interested.

Lillye
Lillye
RockFellaz
Female fronted hard rock/metal… probably an obvious comparison to Halestorm… a fairly accessible/commercial metal sounding thing with female vocals… more on the raspy sung style.

WHITESNAKE
The Purple Album
Frontiers Music
Re-recordings of old deep purple songs.  This modern production gives new life to these classics.

NELSON
Peace Out
Frontiers Music
Yes, this is THAT Nelson.  So yeah, still some classic AOR type stuff.  Proooobbbbably not for the Mosh Pit.

Entrails
Obliteration
Metal Blade Records
Well, with a name like Entrails, this is probably a band you won’t want to fuck with… *hits play*  Nope.  Brutal death metal!  A band from the early 90’s they were resurrected in 2008 and have been keeping it brutal ever since

TAU CROSS
Tau Cross (Radio Promo)
Relapse Records
Some basic metal, a bit like, oh, say Motorhead?  Sure.  Maybe a bit more of a heavier version?  Naw… more like a tribute?  Yeah… still pretty good though.

Vulcano
Bloody Vengeance
Greyhaze Records
1986 release, 2015 reissue… Let’s see… now this would be called thrash… back then total brutal death metal.  This is actually pretty decent, heavy deathy thrash (duh)  but for being about 30 years old, I think it holds up pretty good.

Mystifier
Goetia
Greyhaze Records
Kind of a blackened thrash… but more on a bit of a grindy black metal side of things.  A bit deeper in we get some good melodic doomy black metal too.

NIBIRU
Padmalotus
Argonauta Records
They say to file this under “Psych Ritual Sludge”  yeah… big wall of sludgy screamy drony noise.  4 reallly long tracks.  Not really for me, sorry.

TesseracT
Odyssey
Century Media
A live album showcasing that they can really pull off the shit they do on albums live.  Great proggy tech metal/rock with a good clean live sound too.

XUL
Extinction Necromance
Self-Release (Asher)
Fast techy melodic death metal.  There are a lot of common metal elements going on, but these guys have their own take on stuff and play shit fast fast fast and heavy! One of the best self released “other” releases this week.

Black Pestilence
Outsiders
Self released
Heavy brutal-ish thrash with maybe a pinch of punk and pinch of black metal.  Pretty cool mix of genres going on here and it works well together. good stuff.

Earth Crisis
The Discipline
Genre: Metal
Label: Bullet Tooth
Four song EP from these long time metallers.  Your standard metalled up hardcore stuff.  Still good to have something cool from these guys again.

Third Ion
13/8Bit
Glasstone Records
Proggy metal based on sci-fi an video game stuff, made up of some former Devin Townsend band members and Into Eternity.  Catchy prog metal, clean vocals… great stuff.

Heathen Beast
The Carnage Of Godhra
Self-Released
Black metal from India… just a 3 song ep, but they seem to mix black metal with some modern metal and a bit of some Indian music floating around in the background too.

Pale From Sunlight
Love Was Never an Option
Self-Released
Release Date: 19 April 2015
When I see the genre on this listed as: “Atmospheric/Depressive Black Metal” this is already going to be an uphill battle for me to like.  Yawwwnnn.  There are some moments where it’s blast beaty and faster, but it’s still drony and depressing.

Neck of the Woods
Neck of the Woods
Self Release
Deathy stoner metal with a groove.  I guess I should stay death metal with a bit of a stoner brutal vibe.  yeah.  Good stuff.

Inner Sanctum
Legions Awake
Self-Released
More metal from India!  This time it’s a melodic death/thrash type thing.  Brutal thrashy goodness, good production and a good groove.

Tormention
Chaotic Delusions
Murdher Records
Just some good ol catchy death metal… with oh, I guess some melodic stuff too.  Bonus… they’re from Sweden.

OSCULUM INFAME
The Axis of Blood
Battlesk’r
When I get a lot of black metal in a week, then listen to it all in a row, it gets to be a bit much, as a lot just sounds the same, and yeah… well, this one is just good ol classic black metal with some melody and brutality.  Good stuff.
