New Stuff This Week… 2/29/16

Oceans Of Slumber
Winter
Century Media
Definitely proggy all-over-the-place metal, femaled fronted power metal type stuff, nearly full on black metal/death metal in parts and some general just prog metal type stuff too.  Overall we’re talking femaled fronted (operattic/clean style) stuff though.

Anthrax
For All Kings
Megaforce
Some bands just kinda get all lame and samey when they’ve been around for a while… Anthrax, yeah, they sound like “Anthrax” but it sure is good catchy thrashy stuff.  It has that old school Anthrax feel, but with a modern style too.  Best album of the Joey comeback time…

Church of Misery
And Then There Were None
Rise Above
A big meaty doomy stoner metal sound

Sheer Terror
“Cup O’ Joe” (Remaster 2016) [Single]
Blackout!
Kind of a punky stoner hardcore thing… like a downtuned Suicidal Tendencies or something.

Spirit Adrift
Behind – Beyond
Prosthetic Records
Just a couple of longer songs… Doomy stoner metal, a little bit prog rock-ish and some decent grooves goo.

OMNIUM GATHERUM
Grey Heavens
Century Media
Melodic death metal, a bit more on a viking metal, Amon Amarth type sound, but also some melodic prog metal type stuff going on musically.

Voivod
Post Society
Century Media
What’s cool about Voivod is that while they’re a metal band and there are a million metal bands these days, they have a unique sound… so this EP is unmistakably Voivod.  Heavy yet melodic and catchy and maybe a little quirky too.

Ghost Bath
Moonlover
Nuclear Blast
Classic black metal, a bit doomy and melodic in parts too… a bit strange to get something like this on a “major” metal label… but it’s all good.

Band: Fabiano Andreacchio and The Atomic Factory
Album: Living Dead Groove
Label: Sliptrick records
A bit prog metal, and some shades of industrial… picture like porcupine tree meets fear factory?  yeah… kinda cool.

Band: Reveries End
Album: Edge Of Dark Waters
Label: Sliptrick records
Female fronted metal, a bit of a typical “fe-metal” thing… but this one gets a bit into melodic death and growling and a cool catchy groove musically.

Band: Carnac
Album: Frail Sight
Label: Sliptrick records
Brutal death metal from Turkey.  A little pinch of black metal going on, but overall, a bit of technicality and catchiness on this 4 song EP.

Band: Fenisia
Album: Fenisia Cafe
Label: Sliptrick records
A heavier hard rock thing with a cool groove.  Might be considered solid rock, but there’s just a good classic metal/hard rock going on here.

Dakhma (Switzerland)
Astiwihad-Zohr
Iron Bonehead
Wall of black/death metal noise with very poor production.  Next!

Xibalba (Xibalba Itzaes)
Ah Tza! 7″ EP
Nuclear War Now! Productions
3 song ep of groove laden raw black metal… not the best production, but okay, straight to the point short songs.

Mangled
Involuntary Organ Donor
Boris Records
Blackened melodic death metal.  Music is a bit melodic in parts, but vox stay brutal through this 3 song EP.

Dead Procession
Rituais e Mantras do Medo
Labyrinth Productions
Doomy post-metal.  Long songs, down tempo and depressing… sigh.

Demise of The Crown
Self-Titled
Self-Released
Classic, standard type metal with a prog thing going on.  Abrasive vocals then getting into some over the top metal screams.  Great metal groove and crunchy riffs while having a prog/power metal feel too.

GADGET
The Great Destroyer
Relapse Records
Fast, in-your-face grindy metal with a deathy thrash feel… lots of quick short songs that don’t fuck around.

fubear.
III
Inverse Records
A 70’s metal throwback stoner metal EP

SIERRA
72
independent
Well, this is one 22 minute track of epic proggy doom rock, clean vox, with maybe a bit of a 70’s “metal” vibe.

Devoured Fate
Reality’s Nightmare Illusions
Horror Pain Gore Death
Quality brutal death metal, no messing around, just kicking ass and throwing out some brutal death metal with a bit of a headbangin’ groove.

Temple of Gnosis
De Secretis Naturae Alchymica
ATMF
Melodic avant-garde doom type stuff.

Primitive Man / Northless
Split
Halo of Flies
Primitive Man is sludgey doom. (1 track).  Northless is a sludgey metal with enough melodic stuff musically to be decent, vocals sound pissed off and shouted.

Chestburster
Slime and Guilt
Svart Records
Kind of a dirty sludgey hard rock thing.

INVERLOCH
Distance | Collapsed
Relapse Records
Sludgey dooomy post-metal.

WOLVSERPENT
Aporia:Kala:Ananta (NA Promo)
Relapse Records
one track, 40 minutes of noisy post metal.  meh.

Totem Skin
Weltschmerz
Halo Of Flies
A bit grindy, a little hardcore and a little bit of sludge too.

SATANIC WARMASTER / ARCHGOAT
Lux Satanae (Thirteen Hymns of Finnish Devi Worship) (CD, LP)
Hells Headbangers
Satanic Warmaster is some quality black metal, brutal, melodic and evil!  Archgoat?  we’re talking some brutal black metal with black metal overtones.

Begrime Exemious
The Enslavement Conquest
Dark Descent Records
Black metal with a death metal groove happening…. maybe a little bit of proggy stuff going on here along with some thrashy stuff… Vocals are 100% brutal/evil though.

NEVERWORLD
DREAMSNATCHER
Label: Dream Demon Recordings
Prog metal.  Good traditional clean metal vox, a little bit of a power metal feel, but overall, a bit of an Iron Maiden sound, but proggier and maybe a bit more heavy.

Soon
Vol. 1
Temple of Torturous
Melodic doomy hard rock.  A bit of a stoner metal feel, clean vox, decent groove.

Pictures of Pain
World Demise
Pitch Black Records
This one is interesting, on one hand the music can be melodic death and brutal, on the other hand, it has a doomy stoner metal feel (at least vocally)  Mostly clean vox, but then you get to the really heavy stuff and we’re looking into black metal.  So we’re going back and forth and it’s cool stuff!  Have to just give it a prog tag for the diveristy.

Atrocious Abnormality
Formed in Disgust
Comatose Music
Brutal Death metal!  The best kind right?    No messing around meat and potatoes death metal.

Atrament
Eternal Downfall
Broken Limbs
A bit of a grindy death metal with a groove.

Ripper
Experiment of Existence
Unspeakable Axe / Dark Descent
Heavy technical thrash.  Catchy riffs, maybe a bit brutal/thrash in parts too

Centipede
Sarnath
Inverse Records
Heavy stoner metal, a meaty stoner groove/riffs throughout.

Projekt F
The Butterfly Effect (EP)
Self-Release
This is kind of a heavy active rock sound reminiscent of maybe Static X.  Heavier catchy stuff with an industrial/electronic thing happening.

ELDAMAR
The Force Of The Ancient Land
Self Released
Ambient doomy black metal… a little epic/symphonic too.

Naryan
Black Letters
Inverse
A little doom, melodic rock type stuff.  Probably not quite “metal” enough.

Buffalo Theory MTL
Skeptic Knight
Stand Productions
Meaty hard rock/metal, catchy with a great groove, a little stoner metal feel, and something maybe proggy-ish going on.  There just seems to be a basic overall groove/stoner metal feel, but backing it up, I feel technicality and stuff.  yeah.

Soliloquium
Absence
Transcending Records
Doomy black metal

Artist: Haemophagus
Title: Necromantical Death Grind: the Early Years
Label: Despise the Sun Records
Catchy grindy death metal.

The Clan
All In The NAme Of Folk
Self Released
Folky rock with hurdy gurdys and all that…. not really going there for the Mosh Pit. (although it is fun to hear something different while reviewing 4000 releases this week)

CHERUBS
Fist In The Air
Brutal Panda Records
Noisy sludgy dirt metal.  Under all that distortion, I can tell there’s a cool melodic groove going on.  Vocals are clean and fit the stoner metal mold.

Blood Of The Martyrs
Endgame
Djenty technical melodic death.  Nothing new and special here, but it’s good stuff.

Heartfelt
Heartfelt
Imminence Records
Metalcore/modern metal.  All brutal and heavy and cool and stuff, then you get to the high whiney singy two steppy stuff.  Eh.

I, Ohms
Parallel Connection
Again, this is heavy, catchy (with a lil djent) almost brutalcore type stuff, then we get into the emo/catchy singy vocals in a chorus.

Band name: PHOBOUS
REALM OF DISORDER
SELF RELEASED
Melodic blackened symphonic death metal.  Pretty decent stuff, pretty keyboard heavy in parts, but catchy and heavy, and yeah proggy too.

Diabolus Amator
Despotic Conjuring of the Soulless
Label: Luciferic Truimph Records
Classic raw black metal.  Decent brutal stuff.

Babymetal
“Karate” [Single]
RAL
You know, it wasn’t until the last album was done and the tour all done that Babymetal’s album showed up on top of the year lists… so I got a hold of it and musically it’s pretty great and heavy/brutal, but the girls come in and sing… yeah it’s different and it’s part of the gimmick… it’s catchy as all hell… and the music is a good heavy grooving Slipknot type thing.

Judas Priest
“Breaking The Law” (Live at Battle Cry) [Single]
Epic
Great production and proving these guys can still do this live.  Although it’s an overplayed single, it’s a great classic and a new live version pumps a bit more energy into it.

When Blood Falls Down
Ven[?]aH
Transcending RECORDS
Brutal death metal with a bit of brutalcore type stuff going on.  Overall, heavy classic brutal death metal with no fucking around.

New Stuff This Week… 2/22/16

Anvil
Anvil is Anvil
SPV
Great classic metal with a little thrash… catchy and fun…

Birth of Joy
Get Well
Long Branch
Doomy classic stoner hard rock type stuff.  A little bit of a Trouble/Ghost feel to it.  Maybe a 70’s Deep Purple thing going on too.

Redemption
The Art of Loss
Metal Blade Records
Great to have another album by these guys…. Prog metal!  Not quite as heavy and techincal as some past releases, but a great prog metal album.. wrapping up with a 22 minute epic that does get full on technical, heavy and prog metal as you can get.

Casket Robbery
Evolution of Evil
Mortal Music
Local death metal band… new album is sick, brutal, catchy and not fucking around.  Great to have these guys from right here in town.

The Unguided
Lust And Loathing
Napalm Records
Starting off as some prog metal, then what?  growls?  So I would say this is a mix of some melodic death and some metal core all with that Prog word in front of it. (I think it’s the keyboards and well technical proggy stuff that makes it prog, right? yeah)

ENTOMBED A.D
Dead Dawn
Century Media Records
2nd album from this new iteration of Entombed… and it’s a good release of Death n Roll type stuff.

The Novelists
Souvenirs
Metalville Records
A bit Djenty and a bit hardcore and yeah, a bit proggy too, technical but witwh a metalcore feel.

Holy Grail
Times Of Pride And Peril
Prosthetic Records
Technical proggy thrash metal / classic metal with clean vox and almost sing-a-longy type stuff.  Great technicality and catchiness as well as lots of great metal riffing.

A.H.P.
Against Human Plague
Via Nocturna
Kind of a black metal and a bit of a death metal thing… A good evil/dark feel, but with some decent guitar melodies breaking through the pissed off vocals and brutal drumming

Goatcraft (Slovakia)
Olethros
Iron Bonehead
Old school atmospheric-ish black metal.  Not so great production, a raw evil sound from hell type black metal.

Asphodelus
Dying Beauty & the Silent Sky 12″ MLP
Iron Bonhead
Melodic black metal, 3 song EP with an intro.  Decent contrast between heavy and light… seemingly almost equal time, kinda like Opeth but a bit more raw on the black metal stuff in the heavier parts.

Infernal Curse
Apocalipsis LP
Iron Bonehead
Dark evil grindy black metal, short, heavy and brutal tracks with a bit of a groove and heavy atmospheric feel.

REDWEST
Crimson Renegade
Kind of a folky hard rock/metal thing. Almost like if you took away the heavier metal stuff from Amorphis… you’d maaaybe have this.  Almost folky country metal.

High Priest of Saturn
Son of Earth and Sky
Svart Records
Doomy atmospheric “metal” creepy vocals, big meaty riffs and a hammond organ add to the throwback feel.

Band: Efpix
Album: Evil Sides
Label: Sliptrick records
A bit melodic death metal, a bit industrial/electronic.  They’re from Russia, so there’s a little bit of that “russian” feel to it. Probably a bit too much on the industrial/electronic side for the Mosh Pit.  There’s still a decent metal edge to it though.

Black Twilight Circle
Desert Dances and Serpent Sermons
Iron Bonehead / The Ajna Offensive
Melodic black metal, some a bit brutal, some atmospheric and ambient and maybe a bit “post metal”… tracks are a bit long

Band: Ekram
Album: Last Man Standing
Label: Sliptrick records
Metal edged melodic hard rock.  A little bit of a grunge feel, but a good catchy groove…clean vox going into some screamy stuff too.  I wouldn’t call this metalcore, as it’s more of a melodic metal that gets edgy in parts and lighter and anthemic-rock in parts.  Cool stuff, but maybe not for the Mosh Pit.

Band: Black Sleep
Album: The Whales of the Grey Sea
Label: Sliptrick records
Melodic metal with a little bit of a gothy doom feel. Clean and harsh vox.

Folteraar
Vertellingen van een donkere eeuw LP
Iron Bonehead
Classic black metal with a grindy sounding guitar.

Temisto
Temisto
Pulverised
More of a straightforward blackened death metal.  Good heavy vibe and groove with good heaviness… I’m liking this.

Total Hate
Lifecrusher
Eisenwald
And this is some cool melodic blackened death metal.  A dark, evil black metal feel, but a heavy deathy groove.  Vox are abrasive, constant evil black metal riffage and great groovin’ musical breaks… another cool one.

Krater
Urere
Eisenwald
Seems like a lot of black metal this week… This is fast heavy brutal blackened death variety.  Fast evil stuff with no fuckin’ around.

WAKE
Sowing The Seeds Of A Worthless Tomorrow
Sentient Ruin / Everyday Hate / 7 Degrees / Nerve Altar
Heavy deathy metal with maybe a pinch of black metal thrown in.  Cool brutal stuff which has maybe a little grindy stuff too.

Frozen Ocean
The Prowess Of Dormition
Apocalyptic Witchcraft
Kind of a classic black metal thing going on… a bit repetetive in parts, but it’s got that cold guitar, classic stuff.

DEATHLESS LEGACY
The Gathering
Scarlet Records
Seems like some female fronted proggy hard rockin’ metal. A little gothy, a bit metal, a bit prog.

Knockout Kid
Manic
Label: Bullet Tooth
A bit of a modern metalcore thing.  Cool melodic, almost proggy music, but the vocals are that modern clean singy stuff.  So, while it’s decent, I’m pretty sure a troo metal fan will poopoo on this.

Band: Black Sleep
Album: The Whales of the Grey Sea
Label: Sliptrick records
Sort of a goth / melodic metal with a little bit of a groove and atmospheric feel.

Bombus
Repeat Until Death
Century Media
Modern solid rock type metal, a tiny bit of a Rob Zombie feel.  Mostly melodic hard rock with a punchy groove.

Band: Overunit Machine
Album: Aldaraja
Label: Sliptrick records
Electronic-ified hard rock.  Sounds more on the solid rock side of things, decent catchy melodic hard rock being filled out by some keyboards.

Band: Seventh
Album: The Herald
Label: Sliptrick records
Doomy growly post-metal.  While most post-metal to me is pretty agonizing, this one isn’t quote drony all the time, and just feels more like melodic doom.

Band: The Burning Dogma
Album: No Shores Of Hope
Label: Sliptrick records
Described as “death metal / dark electro”   I can hear a melodic death thing going on, we also have a track or two with some female vox, but overall, this is some good brutal-ish melodic death/death with a bit of keyboard just filling in the background (it’s not too prominent)  Overall this is come cool stuff!

Plateau Sigma
Rituals
AvantGarde Music
I guess this could be called some classic doom metal.  Some growly, downtempo stuff, some clean vox and overall dark and depressing.

Band: The Road Vikings
Album: Requiem Of An Outlaw Biker
Label: Sliptrick records
Cool catchy hard rockin’ biker metal. A bit melodic, but a crunch to it which makes you want to go hang out at a biker bar and smash beer bottles agains the wall.

Sorizon
End of Entrapment EP
Self Released
So this will be like power/prog metal with screamy clean vox, with some heavier prog metal music, then there’s one track that’s just brutal with growly vox… it doesn’t fit, but it’s awesome

DEAD EDITION
Network Failure
Farn Black Productions
I guess I’d call this melodic death. Musically it’s got that diverse melodeath thing… vocally, it’s all growly/shouted, so not quite cookie monster death metal… great grooves going on here too.  Great stuff.

Band: Dimlight
Album: The Lost Chapter
Label: Sliptrick records
A proggy epic melodic death type thing… growly vox, female clean vox, orchestral/keyboard type stuff to give it that epic feel.  Not quite as black metal as a Cradle of Filth, but there’s a similar feel… maybe breaking into a little bit of a goth thing too.

TENDONITIS
Stormreaper
Label:  Self-released
Good ol “metal” a bit of a Judas Priest feel vocally, a bit more of a melodic standard metal thing maybe with a tiny bit of a thrashy edge to it.

Band: Wastage
Album: Slave To The System
Label: Sliptrick records
Heavy brutal-ish thrash from Slovakia.  Catchy quick songs with no messing around, great solos and a great metal groove too.  Vocals are abrasive and almost growly.  Funny, like 20 years ago, this would probably would have been called death metal, now it’s just some heavy thrash! hah.

HYPERION
Seraphical Euphony
Black Lion Productions
A nice full brutal epic blackened melodic death.  There’s full on technical brutality… this might be my favorite release of the week.  It’s got the melody, brutal drumming, great production, proggy death metal… great stuff.

VERRÄTER/SXUPERION
Verräter/Sxuperion
Label: BloodyMountain Records & Sordid Curse Productions
Verrater is some classic old school creepy black metal… fast and raw.  Sxuperion is raw, grindy brutal melodic black metal… some atmospheric stuff going on in parts… overall, raw and brutal.

SEROTONIN SYNDROME
Sarajas
Label:  Self-released
Post-Metal/Rock, melodic, moody, doomy and in parts the vocals get all growly, but overall, it’s some melodic depressing doom.

Band: 4th’n’Goal
Album: Turn On The Light
Label: Sliptrick records
This band from Italy has a modern punk metalcore thing going on.  probably more on the pop punk side of things… meh.

Band: Raff Sangiorgio
Album: Rebirth
Country: Italy
Label: Sliptrick records
Catchy melodic insrumetental metal, a little bit thrashy, but mostly some great guitar work, it’s staying a bit heavy and a great groove. Cool to see instrumental stuff get on a little heavier side.

New Stuff This Week… 2/15/16

Killer Bee
“Joystick Warrior” [Single]
Self-Released
Just a hard rock thing.  Only a single, but It’s borderline not even being metal… so yeahhhh.

Lost Society
Braindead
Nuclear Blast
A kind of classic thrash… raw vox, heavy thrashy sound a bit of a hardcore thing going on too.

Devotion
Worlds And Crystals
The Label Group
To me, this is a bit of a “solid rock” thing.  It’s got a decent groove, isn’t quite metal, isn’t all emo, but isn’t just plain rock.  It has clean melodic vox, and sounds like it’d be on another station in town.

Droids Attack
Sci-Fi Or Die
Riff Reaper Records
Classic hard rockin’ stoner metal with a great groove and a good heavy edge too.  Bonus!?  They’re local!  Great stuff.

Greenleaf
Rise Above
Napalm Records
Throwback doomy stoner metal.  Throwback?  yeah, it’s a bit of a 70’s metal sound… a great groove, major riffage and good melodies too.

FALL OF HUMANITY
“FALL OF HUMANITY” (EP)
New Ocean Media
Metalcore… melodic, brutal and heavy in parts, with a groove and catchy stuff… but then you get some clean vox

Löbo
Alma
Signal Rex
Loonnggg dooomy black metal.

TEN THOUSAND MILES OF ARTERIES
Even Spilled Seed Crawls Toward The Womb
Annihilvs Power Electronix
Not sure what to call this aside from noise.  Sounds like someone leaned on the digital noisemaker machine while someone else was yelling shit in the microphone.

Helion Prime
Helion Prime
Self Released
Melodic female fronted metal.  Good catchy guitar work in this classic metal thing.  Clean female vox, but not growly nor opera-like either.  Just a good rockin’ album here.

Barbaric Horde
Gasmask Perpetrators
War Arts Productions
Death metal with a “local band” feel… kinda icky raw production.  eh.

Triumvir Foul
Triumvir Foul LP
Blood Harvest
Gritty grindy black metal but with a bit of doom in parts and brutal classic blackened death too.

Charm Designer
Everlasting
Inverse Records
Dooomy melodic death metal with a little bit of goth and symphonic metal stuff going on too. I guess with all that going on, they’d compare a little bit to Moonspell.

Amoth
Revenge
Inverse Records
Kind of a standard metal thing, but with some proggy power metal tendencies… getting into a little proggy thrash territory too.  cool stuff.

Among The Prey
Only For The Blinded Eyes
Inverse
Kind of a melodic death/thrash, a heavy Lamb of God sounding thing… but with a bit more groove and melodic almost proggy stuff too.

Various Artists
4 Doors to Death
Unspeakable Axe Records
Just 4 band with 3 songs each of raw black/death metal.

ONIRISM
Cosmic Dream
Self Released
Black metal with some proggy melodic stuff going on.

APATHY NOIR
Across Dark Waters
Artnoir Productions
A bit of a doom metal, some melodic black metal and avant-garde stuff too…. oh why not a pinch of folk metal and prog rock too.

Burial Dust
Oshubho Ahobaan(EP)
Self Released
Death metal with a black metal feel. I wouldn’t called it blackened death metal, as I think of that being a more polished Behemoth type thing.  This has some “ok” production.  it’s not completely shitty, but it’s not that great.  We’ll say it’s raw.

LAST FRONTIER
Theta Healing (Through the poison)
Label: Revalve Records
A sort of proggy power metal.  You know, I get so much stuff from PR companies and stuff… a lot of times, it’s just the same ol black metal stuff.  Its a bit refreshing to have something different than that!  Melodic metal with keyboards and decent clean vox that don’t get too out of hand screamy… reminds me a bit of real early Dream Theater.

INGLORIOUS
Until I Die – RADIO SINGLE
Frontiers Music s.r.l.
A new hard rock band with a classic hard rock/metal sound.  big riffs and a great groove with almost over the top vox.  cool stuff for the hard rock fan.

Band: Nest
Album: Nest
Label:  Tribunal of the Axe Records
Sludgey doom metal with semi-growly vox.  Decent riffy grooves, probably a bit too sludgey for me though.

ETHEREAL RIFFIAN
Youniversal Voice
Label:  Self-Released
So, this is described as “Psychedelic/Stoner/Progressive/Doom”  and it really truly is that to a T.  Cool grooves, punchy sound, heavy and cool.  Vocals are more on the doomy style though.

Band: Desert Dragon
Album: Before The Storm
Label: Sliptrick records
As the above one… this one is “Style: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock/ Melodic Metal”  And I hear that too… There’s a good almost early 90’s heavy AOR feel, but a modern prog hard rock thing going on too.  Good clean production, the vocals have a good clean mid-range sound but this guy can escalate and hit those high notes too.  Decent stuff.

SKELETOON
The Curse of the Avenger
Label:  Revalve Records
Wow, it’s been a while since getting a just plain old good “Power metal” band/release.  That’s what this is.  Fist pumping, singalong power metal, which actually gets pretty fast and heavy in parts too.

AD VITAM
Stratosfear
Label:  Revalve Records
I saw this described as prog death metal… thinking it’d just be some heavier death metal with some riffy proggy type stuff happening.  This is actually like, almost heavier Dream Theater-like metal with growly vox.  Pretty cool actually.

Band: Revenience
Album: Daedalum
Label: Sliptrick records
Female fronted gothy power metal.
